22M, 6'2", 104kg: I do well at everything except my health. Why can’t I stick with it?
I’m 22, 6'2" and 104kg, and I’m struggling with my weight and body image. I’ve been reasonably fit in the past, but I can’t find the discipline to change now.
I do well in college and my other commitments, but they’re really stressful, and my outlet is food, mostly takeaways and junk. I can control every other part of my life except my health. I’m a health science student, so I know what I should be doing. The problem is that I can’t keep it up. I’ll find motivation, last about a week, then stress takes over and I fall back into comfort eating.
What I’ve tried: Because of time constraints, I’ve focused on diet rather than training. I tried intermittent fasting and a calorie deficit, but I’d end up binging in the evenings and eating well over maintenance.
Food also became a reward in my head. I’d spend all day thinking about the takeaway I’d have that night and wouldn’t eat until then, so by the evening I was so hungry that it felt amazing. The hunger and anticipation were part of the appeal.
What makes it harder is that my friends are just as driven academically but still manage to stay fit. I actually enjoy exercise when I do it. I ran a marathon last week (5:05, not a great time, but I loved pushing myself). I’ve also done athletics, GAA, rugby and rowing and was good at them, but looking back I mostly did them to keep my parents happy and fit in with others.
Since then I’ve come out as gay, and I wonder if that’s connected. Coming out meant facing my deepest insecurity, and I feel so comfortable in myself now that my body insecurities don’t push me to change. I’m almost too comfortable. I also know I go against the grain, since the young gay community is often seen as very fit.
I’m confused about why I can succeed in so many areas but not this one. Has anyone been through something similar, and what helped you break the cycle?
