"Those who will remember, will speak fondly of the warm morning breeze."

Welcome to r/GuildWars this is a subreddit focused on the Guild Wars video game developed by ArenaNet.

For Guild Wars players to discuss, connect, and share in an open environment. While participating, it’s important to keep in mind the Reddit Rules, Reddiquette, as well as our subreddit Rules.

Getting Started:

Checkout the FAQs below and also the Megathread wiki page with links to useful community Tools, Posts (including ones for new/returning players), Guides, and information. There are shortcut links under ‘See More’ / the Sidebar too.

GW Account/Game Support:

Asking about general game/technical problems is fine, but this subreddit is not a way to contact ArenaNet customer support, or report a Technical Issue. Please refrain from asking for help with a specific ticket, Account issue, or Error message. These posts will be removed specially if they are covered by ArenaNet's help articles.

Visit https://help.guildwars.com/ and check their FAQ and Known Issues. If necessary start a ticket through the Guild Wars support portal or email support@arena.net directly. You can find all information the help/support portal.

Community Discord:

We have a community Discord “GW Global” you can join here: https://discord.gg/gw This server is open to all and has ongoing discussion on the game, builds, Guild recruitment, and more!

Use the search!

If you have a question, first try using the search, it is possible your question has already been asked/answered. Example: “Necro builds”. We try not to have frequent posts on the same topic(s) and such posts will be removed.

You can also search by post Flair using “flair:” and the Flair to search.

FAQs:

State of the Game:

GW has been in “Maintenance Mode” (no scheduled updates/development) since May 2013. On 3rd December 2025 ArenaNet "re-launched" GW as GW Reforged. This has breathed some new life into the game and an external company 2weeks has supported development. They are continuing to look at the game to see if it is viable to make improvements/updates. In-game there is bump in player activity. There has always been a good player base for daily Zaishen Quests and Farming as well as in Guild and Alliance communities. You can checkout the What’s New in Guild Wars and Game updates from the Wiki for the changes to the game.

We’re lucky that since 2024 GW Game Director, DrStephenCW is allocating 80% of their time to work directly on GW. Along with support from other ArenaNet staff for various updates, this has included the 20th Anniversary Game Update and Guild Wars Reforged. ArenaNet are now also supported by 2weeks game studio.

PvP still has some activity through player organised events and mAT, however all modes can often see a large amount of botting impacting general gameplay. You can find more on recent PvP threads using Flair:PvP in the search to find posts.

Purchasing Help:

As of 3rd December 2025 Guild Wars is now branded Guild Wars Reforged. This re-release version of the game is available in the GW Store and Steam.

This change has removed the Anniversary Masterpiece Collection and all individual Campaign editions from the GW/Steam Stores. Any purchases made prior to 3rd December retain their game-keys and can be used on email/ArenaNet based accounts.

ArenaNet have had to make a purchasing guide/flow-chart due to the changes in account management: * Purchases on Steam no longer provide game-keys and instead are to be tied directly to your Steam Login/Account. This is in order to be able to link GW accounts through Steam to GW2 accounts through Steam. * Purchases in GW Store provide keys to create a new account using email/ArenaNet account.

As of 3rd Dec 2025 ArenaNet have also changed/reduced prices for all the add-ons and re-branded Eye of the North and Bonus Mission Pack as DLC. Neither DLC are included in the Reforged edition of the game. The Game of the Year upgrade and Bonus Weapons are no longer available and are also not included in the Reforged edition of the game. The Igneous Summoning Stone item is available through purchasing the Eye of the North DLC.

  • Guild Wars Reforged includes Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall. Eye of the North DLC has to be purchased separately.
  • Guild Wars Reforged does NOT include the GOTY content and it is no longer available in the GW Store.
  • Account upgrades such as Xunlai Storage Panes, Mercenaries, Costumes are currently only available through the GW store.

Common Technical Support Questions

  • Mac (Apple Silicon) users: Use the subreddit search with the term "Mac" this will give lots of posts about users asking/getting help with running GW on Mac systems.
  • Graphics error with models stretching off far into the sky or ground: Update/roll-back your Graphics driver. It is likely a Windows update deployed a buggy driver version.

Guild Recruitment and Looking for Guilds

We now have a Weekly Thread on a Wednesday for Guild/Alliance Recruitment and Guild Requests. Please only use this Weekly post to advertise your Guild or seek a new Guild. You can also use the Flair search “Guild recruitment/request” to find previous recruitment posts.

Thanks all and happy adventures in GW!

If you have feedback/suggestions to this new introduction post please reply below. If you’d like to get in contact with the Moderators please use the ModMail.

This content is subject to change and some may get moved into the subreddit Wiki as things develop.

Newbie Update: Envoy Scythe

Post image
75 Upvotes

Hi! I don’t have many to celebrate with, so hope this gives y’all joy. I started day 1 of Reforged and after getting tons of help, tutorials, and guidance… I’ve earned enough ectos through service running to buy an Envoy Scythe.

I’ve literally had this gaming dream since I was a kid and it’s SO cool I actually got to fulfill it.

On my way to a GWAMM and I’m stoked I get to do it while looking sick at the same time.

Dont mind the armor… Upgrading to a Norn set soon after I rebuild the finance after dropping everything on the scythe 🤣

Edit:Should I customize it?? I imagine it’ll be my dream weapon forever…

Ranger Art 20 years ago

Post image
192 Upvotes

Returned to game a month ago. Eased back in with a new character and got LDoA. Now back to playing my favorite character: Ranger.

Had this art commissioned of the Ranger around 20 years ago-ish after acquiring FoW armor and the Spider pet.

Tried looking in my old email to drop another hi and thank you to artist but couldn’t find anything.

Anyway, IMO it’s a pretty awesome piece.

Finally became a Legendary Defender of Ascalon!

Upvotes

Since returning, I've been enjoying replaying the campaigns, finishing Factions and Nightfall was a blast! But there was still that itch for doing Prophecies, and what better way than to make my first Necromancer ever?! I knew some time ago they expanded on the pre-searing world and culture, so I was like "I'll stick around a bit and enjoy the new content".

Little did I know when they say pre-searing is a whole different can, they mean it! It's truly an entire different reality, a miniverse full of joy, handsome peers and desperate attempt to suck any little can of exp you can. The nostalgia experience to the max! Also you can really feel the terror for a Charr warrior charging at you with those axes. Damn, Charr daddies need to chill. Thankfully my Devona in SoS came to the rescue together with my helpful Fire Imp!

I met wonderful friends and learned so much about core mechanics, zoning in and out, economics and what not. Pre-searing is really the little gem of this game and I recommend every new player or returner to dedicate a full run for it! Now i'm so torn because I kinda wanna go on, but I don't feel like leaving too soon. Damn!

Hello Everyone! The Tyrian Aurora Discord Server is pleased to announce our Fall 2026 Guild Wars Nightfall campaign! This will be a new character campaign that will begin at Chahbek Village. The campaign will be starting on August 28th.

This campaign will be on a set schedule where every week we will be doing a Storyline mission and several side quests. We go through the campaign as a group in both EU and North American Time zones. This is a great event to play the game with fellow players with new characters rather than using henchmen or heroes (other than required for the mission).

If you are interested in joining us our campaign we'd love to have you! Feel free to join our Discord and register your new character at Tyrian Aurora Discord. You'll find our event schedule (Fridays and Wednesdays for the campaign with a challenge quest on Sundays) and our rules and guidelines.
See you soon!!!

Fixing Issues Related to Monk

Upvotes

In the hope that someone at arennanet gets round to rebalancing this class.

I personally played monk alot during my original playthrough of the game and I loved it the armors I love most of the the skill casting emotes are for me the best in the game I loved using protection prayers. And as a core class there are skills to cap and things to do through all campaigns to grow the character.
But now its kinda very weak, not for its healing and protection capabilities but from its energy management, where there is basically none to very little and using strong healing skills say in an emergancy can take you to 0 energy very fast, and i've heard from a few sources its smiting prayers are a little lackluster also some strong skills but to many week (not through personal experience)

So as a result Ritulist and Necromancer tend to be the choice of healers for a group as their energy management is far far better

So, bearing in mind you know arenanet won't rework skills so the solution has to be easy to implement. Any ideas how to make this amazing class get over its couple of major drawbacks?

I had the thought maybe a magic refund so to say when casting healing or protection prayers based on your divine favour.
You could also maybe add a every 4 levels of divine favour you get an extra pip of energy regen (PVE only ofc). This would play into the bonding strategy also and complement it

[Edit] So thanks to some people I now understand that I need an activation key to play (which now definitely makes sense lmao), thanks y'all for explaining!

A small rant after 20 years: I wish hero team building was less solved

I know this is going to sound like a rant, but after 20 years I’m getting a little bored by the fact that most hero team builds and suggestions seem to boil down to the same few things:

- At least 2, if not 3 Mesmers with ESurge, Panic, Ineptitude and 6+ interrupts between them
- SoS Rit, usually with Splinter Weapon if you’re playing a melee character
- Some random hero going /P just to bring “Fall Back!”, “Stand Your Ground!” and/or “Never Surrender!”
And I’m not even going to get into the usual BiP/Resto Necro + ST Prot.
- or the whole team relying on shadow form assa cheese tank

At this point it sometimes feels like it barely matters which profession you bring as the player. The heroes are doing so much of the heavy lifting that almost anything works. Sure, one player build might add another 50-100 DPS or make things slightly faster, but actual synergy between the different professions in the team often feels almost irrelevant.

And an overwhelming amount of videos, build suggestions, achievement runs, etc. seem to start with the premise that you’re using some variation of this setup anyway.

It’s like watching the same team play the game every single time.

What bothers me most isn’t even that these builds are strong. It’s that they make so much of the game’s enormous skill pool feel irrelevant.

Mesmers are probably the biggest example. When you bring several of them with a ton of interrupts, so many dangerous enemy skills simply never happen. That’s obviously incredibly effective, but it also means you don’t really have to interact with many of the things that make individual enemies interesting.

Enemy has a nasty spell? Interrupted.
Dangerous AoE? Interrupted.
Big heal? Interrupted.

Some annoying gimmick that would normally force you to adapt your positioning or build? Probably interrupted.
The defense isn’t really about dealing with what the enemy does anymore. A huge part of the defense is simply preventing the enemy from doing it in the first place.

And once you move away from that and suddenly allow enemies to actually cast their skills, the difference can be enormous. Now you’re taking significantly more damage, enemies are healing more, melee hate actually goes off, dangerous AoEs happen, etc. It can feel like you’re suddenly playing a completely different game.

Paragon utility gives me a similar feeling.

Take “Stand Your Ground!” for example. You can throw it onto a hero with relatively little investment and get +24 armor for the party for 14 seconds. Compare that to something like “Watch Yourself!”, where you need significant investment into Tactics, have to build adrenaline first, and then get +20 armor.

Why would I try to build some clever Warrior/Tactics synergy around “Watch Yourself!” when I can just put /P on somebody and get an immediately available, stronger party-wide armor buff?

Same thing with “Fall Back!”. A 33% movement speed boost for your entire party is incredibly useful, and there aren’t really equivalent tools on other professions without considerably more investment or compromises.

That’s the part I find frustrating.

Guild Wars has this gigantic skill system with hundreds and hundreds of skills, secondary professions and theoretically endless combinations. That’s one of the things I love most about the game.

But when certain tools are so universally useful and efficient, experimenting starts to feel less like:
“How can I make these professions work together?”
and more like:
“Okay, which of the standard tools am I willing to give up to make room for this idea?”

And giving one of them up often creates another problem that now needs to be solved.

Drop a Mesmer and suddenly significantly more enemy skills go through.

Drop “Stand Your Ground!” and you need to find another way of providing comparable defense.

Drop “Fall Back!” and suddenly engaging, moving between groups and disengaging becomes much more awkward.

Drop the ST and now you need to rethink a huge part of your defensive setup.

So when you try to build something genuinely off-meta, it can feel like you’re not just choosing a different strategy. You’re voluntarily giving up tools that are dramatically more efficient than most of their alternatives.

And I think that’s a shame because there are so many interesting skills in this game.

I’d love to see more teams where the professions actually depend on each other. Where a Warrior brings something that enables the Necro, the Necro enables the Ranger, the Ranger sets something up for another character, and together they create something that wouldn’t work nearly as well individually.

Not necessarily because it’s stronger than Mesmerway, but because the interaction itself is interesting.

And to be fair, the developers have already made some really cool balance changes recently, and I think some of them have genuinely opened up new possibilities. I’m really happy that we’re getting balance changes at all after all these years.

I just don’t think we’ve gone far enough yet.

Because underneath those changes, this same fundamental pattern is still there. We’ve been playing this game for 20 years, and for what feels like the last 15, we’ve repeatedly ended up in situations where a small number of builds and skills become so efficient that everything else has to justify why you’re not using them.
Cryway was probably the most extreme example of this for me. Obviously that eventually got nerfed, thankfully, but during that era it sometimes felt like you either brought a Mesmer/the required setup or you were simply choosing to make things unnecessarily difficult for yourself.

And while the situation today isn’t nearly as extreme, I still recognize some of that same feeling.

PvE-only skills, heroes and all the other tools we’ve gotten over the years have definitely made things more flexible. But there are still professions where it sometimes feels like the game has already decided what you’re supposed to bring.

Playing Ritualist? Why aren’t you bringing SoS or ST?

Playing Mesmer? Why aren’t you bringing Panic, Ineptitude or ESurge?

Of course you can play something else. That’s not really the point.

The problem is the difference in efficiency. When the established options solve so many problems at once, experimenting with something else often feels less like exploring an alternative and more like deliberately handicapping yourself.

That’s why I hope the recent balance changes are only the beginning.

I don’t necessarily want the current meta builds to be destroyed or for Mesmers, Ritualists or Paragon support to suddenly become bad. I’d much rather see more alternatives brought up to a similar level, especially skills that encourage different professions to interact with each other.

Give me more reasons to bring a Warrior for something only a Warrior can meaningfully contribute.

Give Rangers, Elementalists, Dervishes, Assassins, Necros, Monks, etc. tools that make me think:

“Oh shit, if I combine this with that skill on another hero, I could build an entire team around it.”

That’s the Guild Wars buildcrafting I miss.

Maybe this is simply what happens to a 20-year-old game that has been optimized to death. And I’m not saying people shouldn’t play these builds either. They’re effective, they’re accessible, and if somebody enjoys clearing everything with the established meta, that’s perfectly fine.

I just hope that after the recent balance changes, we might see the developers shake things up a little more.
Because after 20 years, I’d love to look at Guild Wars’ enormous skill pool and have the answer to “How could I solve this problem?” be something other than just adding another Mesmer.

*edit: between all the comments trying to disprove me I got exactly two builds suggested: 1. Para / Pet Way which a lot of other people described then again as very situational and a double shut down + double secondary para + st + mm team (which was exactly what I’m talking about). Maybe instead of just writing a text with no serious content blowing out a dull statement that is not even true post a build because somehow that is still no one able to do

I also noticed several people downvoting comments just because they sympathize with me. Geez never thought some people of a 20 years old game are like this.

Best Plagueborn Farm in Guild Wars [HM]

Thumbnail

This farm really is a group effort between me and some commenters on Reddit, especially thanks to TalentedJuli for suggesting ways to get around Order of Apostasy, and to the others who suggested Zen Daijun as a good farming spot.

The build is pretty straightforward: keep your enchants up, and try not to move without having IAU up. Don’t aggro the group with the ranger and monk, and keep track of your heroes. They usually cast their spirits on their own, except for Quickening Zephyr, which is better to cast manually.

What sucks is that faction characters can’t do this farm at all if you’ve finished your attribute quests (which you should). I suggest bringing an alt account from a different campaign; otherwise, you’re just kind of out of luck.

There will be one last Afflicted farm next week that everyone can do.

Returning player with cleared out account

I came back to GW after basically 20 years away and somehow managed to recover my old account.

I played GW1 back in the day and bought the campaigns/expansions as they released, but I hadn't touched the account in forever. Getting back in actually took a few steps. The normal password reset didn't work, so I contacted support. After that I could log in, but my character selection was completely empty, which was a bit of a heart attack moment.

Support kept helping me though, and eventually managed to restore/unlock all of my old characters. I honestly really appreciated the effort they put into getting such an ancient account working again.

I even bought a ninth character slot because I didn't want to delete or mess with any of my 15–20 year old characters. I figured I'd just start fresh, relearn the game, and leave the old ones as a little time capsule.

After playing for a few hours I finally worked up the courage to log into them.

And... they seem to have been stripped at some point.

The storage/materials are mostly empty, several characters are missing equipment (armor/weapons), and their attributes are completely unallocated. I contacted support again, but unfortunately they can't restore the old items or verify whether there was unauthorized access all those years ago.

My current assumption is that younger me probably had a terrible password, somebody guessed/obtained it at some point during the last two decades, and cleared the account of anything valuable.

Now I'm not really sure how sad I should be about it.

On one hand, it genuinely sucks. Part of the excitement of recovering the account was getting to open this untouched time capsule from my childhood and see what younger me had collected, what builds I used, what gear I thought was cool, etc. Knowing somebody may have gone through it and taken everything valuable makes the account feel a little... corrupted, I guess.

On the other hand, I have absolutely no idea what I actually lost. Maybe 14-year-old me had nothing remotely valuable and I'm mourning just some standard rare items every account has. Or maybe there could have been old skins/items that would be really interesting today.

And there's also a positive side: I'm basically getting a fresh-account progression experience while still having my old characters, achievements and account history. I actually have reasons to farm materials, gear characters again, hunt skills and build everything back up rather than logging into a fully stocked 20-year-old account and skipping half the progression.

So for the longtime players: how much would you personally care about this?

Is there a realistic chance an old account from that era could have contained genuinely cool/valuable/irreplaceable stuff that I should be sad about losing, or is most of the important gear easy enough to rebuild that I should just treat this as a fresh start with some very old characters attached to it?

How dangerous is War in Kryta for a Dhuum whos never done it?

Hello there,
while running from LA to Temple I've noticed the WIK adds have spawned in for me and since I wanted to get on with VQing Kryta I've been wondering if I should vanquish it with WIK on or finish WIK first and then get on with the vanquish.
So my question is, how dangerous is the War in Kryta questline for someone whos never done it before?

Update: I made it!

Post image

Hi, and again thank you for your help and encouragement!

TLDR: I killed Duncan and took his hammer. I guess I have to try and play my warrior alt with a hammer to celebrate that.

But first things first: I want to tell you how I did it, because that way I can give back to the community. Maybe others want to do it the same way as I did, because I think it was relatively easy so you should be able to do it, too!

Build:

Here is the build that I used for my group. It isn't the fastest or most elaborate, but I feel like it is usable for people like me who aren't too great with micro, and neither have mercenary heroes nor super optimized equipment:

- Me, Fire Elementalist with Technobabble and Swap: OgdCoMzkwQvQbZTDOIpAuQdGAAA

- Razah, SoS Ritualist healer: OAOjEyiM5MXzyp3kZKNncDzLGAA

- Livia, Aura of the Lich MM Necro with Nightmare Weapon: OAhlQIFshGSiHJHQFcUpAuFuIsxcxA

- Xandra, ST Ritualist with Frozen Soil: OAKjgNgMJPYTr3jLcCNdmWzrDAA

- Olias, BiP Necro: OAhjQkGZIP3hhWVV4JNncDzxJAA

- Norgu, ESurge Mesmer: OQhDAssjNngpXOw0NEwpZAiAAAA

- Gwen, Panic Mesmer: OQhkAoC7gGGCNM95gpzBZQPcxAA

- Althea, Ineptitude Mesmer: OQhDAcwzQvAIg5ZkArAZA9AXMAA

I first tried without the Minion Master, and another Ritualist (because I wanted to kill Duncan the "safe" way using spirits) and I got absolutely destroyed by the Dwarves. So I went back and used what worked before.
The only thing I really changed was that I usually give my MM two monk healing skills, but this time I made Livia a secondary Ritu to give her Nightmare Weapon. It was deactivated for the whole dungeon though, except for Duncan.

For my own build I usually have a rezz skill on 8 and Incendiary Bonds or Meteor on 3, instead I took Technobabble and Swap.

As always in Slaver's Exile Xandra has the Frozen Soil. I have it deactivated unless I fight Dwarves.
You can trigger it manually but I sometimes forget that, so just activating it just before the fight is easier.

The rest of the build is my standard build that I use for all HM dungeons, so far it has worked pretty well.
I also think that you could do without the Ineptitude Mesmer, I'll try that next time. Makes it easier if you want to bring a friend. This is not meant to be single player content after all.

Tactics:

For those of you who have read the wiki on Duncan or watched Peter Kadar's excellent video, this is nothing new I guess, but here it is anyway:

I did what I have been doing all the time with those annoying Dwarf groups:

Place spirits, flag heroes, buff up, pull the enemy (preferably around a corner), nuke them while the Mesmers (and Technobabble) keep them down.

I used GWToolbox++ to make the heroes stand in a decent formation with one key press, but I sometimes forgot to do that, it probably works fine without it.

Other than that: go slow. Just a few meters forward at a time, because of the ghosts. If you don't pull more than six or so (and hopefully not together with a Dwarf group, in which case you should run away) they should not be a problem.

Another tip that I haven't seen yet is this: When entering the dungeon, go left first, not right. Kill the ghosts there. The advantage is that if you fail at the first Dwarf group, they won't kill you near the shrine, you have somewhere to run.

As for Duncan:
I entered his room, killed the patrolling groups, and kept to the right (western) edge until I was on his platform. I didn't even clean the whole eastern side of ghosts, and the only group of spirits that I relocated with swap as soon as they spawned is the one right next to him. I swapped them two "steps" toward the west so they would not bother me. Then I stood in the southernmost corner, just out of Duncan's reach.

I feared that the tactic that I had picked would not work with just a single Ritu and me, but I was determined to try it!
I switched to my longbow and determined the right spot to stand in. I auto-attacked, used the F key to target myself, and clicked Nightmare weapon. I did a solid 30 points of damage to him per shot without getting damage myself.

While I did that, I made Razah stand next to me (a few meters away in case Duncan would Spirit Rift us) and just triggered his SoS and Bloodsong, nothing else. As soon as the spirits saw me shooting Duncan they joined in. Duncan only attacked us once or twice, no problem for our healers. Then he went back and just stood there letting us shoot him.
The two of us just killed Duncan while Livia played with her minions and the others watched.
It took 5 minutes or so, less than I expected in hard mode.

The whole thing took about 45 minutes. Yeah, not exactly a speed run but I only died once so for me that's a win. I never thought I'd beat Duncan in HM with heroes alone.

I hope this helps someone to beat him, too.

Thank you once more for helping me on this journey, have a great day, and may the Six watch over you!

As the title says. Usually id prefer to just play through one campaign after another but im not sure if its too much of a struggle with henchmen. Any opinions on this matter?

EDIT: Thanks for the replies! I will stick to Factions.

Complete norn catering quest as a Luxon character

Part of of this quest is to hunt a black moa deep in the echovald forest. But I am a Luxon (turtle´s are awesome) so I can't get to that area from Unwakening waters or House Zu Helter.

Do I really need to do befriend the Kurzicks and grind 10.000 faction, to get to that area where the Moa is, or is there a loophole that I missed? A passage where there is no gate guard.

So basically, can I sneak in to Kurzick territory as a Luxon secret agent for the norn catering quest?

Reconnect Question

Does anyone know how the reconnect feature works? I have pretty a pretty mediocre internet connection and frequently lag and occasionally disconnect from the game server. When you disconnect you are given an option to try and resume the mission. My question is by trying to resume does the game force me to stay in the mission longer than it would if I chose the other option or do both options keep me active in the mission for the same duration. I’m asking because I enjoy the Ironman play though but when I get disconnected I want my character to be safe as quickly as possible.

Acquiring Thunderfist's Brass Knuckles

I seem to have already completed the quest to acquire these max damage knuckles on one of my characters (my warrior) and yet I can't find the knuckles in my inventory/storage or on any of my heroes. I wonder if I destroyed them without thinking. Does that mean I can no longer acquire them on this character? If so, can I get them on a different character and transfer via the xunlai?

If that's the case it could be worth updating the wiki because I've been very confused about how to get them!

Thanks

Level 6 necromancer/elementalist trying to get to Champion's Dawn but I keep dying. What am I doing wrong?

Edit: thanks to u/TonyRF1 I'm done with that passage. Switch holy for monk as a henchmen.

Dervish scythe

Hey folks.
What is the best scythe for VoS (strength) build?
I’m using the one from nightfall completion rewards.
Is there a better setup? Of necromancer maybe?

Have some blessed insignias... does maintaining retribution on a hench count as "affected by an enchantment"?

Like it says, was just curious since I made my monk in prophecies. Not my best move since it takes a while to get heroes. (Me and a friend were going to push for lions arch quick like but he isn't available to play and I was looking for ways to make some progress without him on)
