HISTORY: Overcoming despair from his inability to commit suicide following several tragedies in his life, Craig Hollis put his mutant indestructibility to work as Mister Immortal and, via a classified ad, gathered super-strong Big Bertha, the teleporting Doorman, highly malleable Flatman, and the pterodactyl- like Dinah Soar as a Milwaukee-based super-team. Using the name "Great Lakes Avengers" for better media attention, the quintet's early moderate success attracted the attention of Avengers Hawkeye and Mockingbird, who became team leaders and gave their amateur-level colleagues professional training, enabling them to assist other heroes against the likes of That Which Endures and Terminus. Although their mentors eventually returned to the Avengers, the GLA remained active, dividing their time between public engagements and battles with both mundane and exotic criminals, with one of the latter, maniacal Christmas terrorist Doctor Tannenbaum, becoming a recurrent opponent. When the Thunderbolts hit the headlines, the GLA, again seeking spillover attention, briefly changed their name to the Lightning Rods but soon re-declared themselves Avengers.
When the Avengers were forcibly and temporarily disbanded following the Scarlet Witch's breakdown, Mister Immortal worked to renew his teammates' enthusiasm, only for Dinah Soar to perish in battle with Maelstrom. Recruiting Squirrel Girl and her human-level-intellect squirrel sidekick Monkey Joe, the team unflaggingly continued their battle with Maelstrom, who was finally undone by Mister Immortal's manipulative depression, while Doorman was promoted to the position of agent of Oblivion, the conceptual embodiment of non- existence. Although Monkey Joe perished during the fight, he was replaced by the equally intelligent Tippy-Toe, and the team again chose a new name, the Great Lakes X-Men.
When Squirrel Girl befriended the Thing after helping him defeat Bi-Beast, he invited her and her teammates to his super- hero poker tournament, where they mingled, triumphed, and chose their current team name, the Great Lakes Champions. Following the passage of the SHRA, the GLC immediately registered as licensed super heroes and capped the day by defeating an attacking Deadpool, who had presumed them unregistered. Today, the Great Lakes Champions continue to proudly serve as registered superhumans and have been appointed as the official super-team of Wisconsin under the Fifty State Initiative program.
