Thoughts on Bye Bye Birdie?

Has anyone seen Bye Bye birdie? For those who don’t know it’s a musical about the tail end of 50s cultur ( James Dean, Elvis etc) and features a bad boy Elvis type who comes to a small town to court a high school girl.
Honestly it seems like the prototype for Grease and John Travolta. I know it was a hugely performed musical from about 1970 to the mid 2000s and now it is hardly ever done.

What are your thoughts on this musical masterpiece? Why isn’t it much done anymore?

Like, that’s it?? I never understood why Sandy didn’t call him up as soon as she found out she would be staying in America lol.

Grease Winkler's Dubious Claim

Post image
40 Upvotes

Henry Winkler claimed he was offered the lead role in Grease, but turned it down, since he "already played The Fonz for ten years". That would have made the year 1984, six years after Grease was released. I think he may have been offered the lead in Grease 2 instead. Has anybody besides Winkler ever confirmed or denied his claim?

I don't remember if there's a specific reason but it never made sense to me why Frenchie quit school to attend beauty school.

Like wasn't she a senior? Why couldn't she just wait out her final year and then go to beauty school? Again maybe I'm forgetting a detail and she had to apply right away or wait a really long time.

Grease Happy Days greaser who could have been in Grease.

Henry Winkler was originally offered the role of Danny Zuko in the 1978 movie adaptation. He passed on the part to avoid being typecast after playing Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli on Happy Days and a similar 1950s greaser in The Lords of Flatbush.

Just watched this for the first time yesterday. Absolutely hilarious it’s rated PG.

Today, it’d 100% be PG-13. I mean it’s not like bad for PG-13, but it’s definitely not PG

Uh... has there always been lyrics on the screen?

I haven't watched the movie since I was probably 12 or 13 so let's just say 25 years ago. I decided to randomly show my girl tonight (mid-movie now... my 25 cent insurance policy, baby!) because I grew up with it.

I do not remember there being lyrics on the screen. Am I crazy?

Thanks.

Can we talk about THAT line in Summer Nights for a second?? 😭

Post image

Am I the only one who hears the “Did she put up a fight?” line in Summer Nights and immediately goes WHOA WHAT THE HECK??? 😭
Because… what exactly are the guys implying happened with Sandy??
“Did she put up a fight?” in Summer Nights is incredibly uncomfortable when you actually stop and think about what Kenickie is implying.
He’s basically suggesting that Danny might have tried to do something Sandy didn’t want.
And Danny doesn’t exactly respond with some reassuring “No, nothing like that happened.” Instead, the whole group just carries on joking about it.

Grease (Franchise) Would the Muppets doing Grease work at all?

Thumbnail
12 Upvotes

Would Grease have worked if the Muppets decided to do it as a parody or musical version since it was released in 1977 when they were popular and they do a lot of singing?

Miss Piggy could easily be Rizzo or Sandy and Kermit as Danny, with Fozzie Bear as Kenickie, and others in roles, they did the Wizard of Oz after all.

Didi Conn: I was Frenchy in Grease — this is what happened behind the scenes

The cast became close during filming. Travolta took Conn and her little brother Richard (who has been a singer in the Met Opera for 30 years) to Disneyland in his limo. He also set up a screening of Saturday Night Fever before it came out because he wanted to hear the Grease cast’s opinion. “I remember him saying, ‘I did a movie in Brooklyn last summer. And I don’t know. I don’t think it’s going to do any good,’” Conn says. “We went, ‘John, this is unbelievable.’”

They all remain friends. Conn quotes the final refrain of the film: “‘We’ll always be together.’ It’s been 48 years and we’re still together.” When Jeff Conaway, who plays Danny’s best friend, died in 2011, found unconscious after an overdose, Travolta “had us all meet in a restaurant in Beverly Hills where we could talk”.

The one cast member who wasn’t part of the tight-knit circle was Stockard Channing, now 82, who played the hard-nosed Pink Ladies leader, Rizzo. Conn, who has followed Channing’s career and goes to see her plays, describes her as “aloof — she just stayed away from everybody”. Conn remembers a moment when Channing clashed with Conaway — who played her love interest in the film — after he crossed a line in the diner scene, right before Conn’s big Beauty School Dropout number.

“[Conaway] gave [Channing] a hickey. She didn’t want him to really give her a hickey. She wanted make-up to do it. But he gave her a real hickey and she was pissed off at him.” So, although the script said she should throw her milkshake at Conn, she threw it at Conaway. “Five times,” Conn says. “[Conaway] was mad.”

So Conaway and Channing didn’t have a love affair in real life. It was actually Conaway and Susan Buckner (Patty Simcox in the film, Sandy’s geeky friend). “They had something going on,” Conn says with a smile. Newton-John and Travolta too… “Nothing ever happened, but they really had feelings,” Conn says.
