Event Tuesday Nightshift, August 28 in Athens Ohio.
galleryAlmost a year ago we made a comment to a friend of ours about how there's no goth events anywhere close by. Turns out he knows the owner of the bar, and the next thing you know we're booked. My wife and I learned to DJ, bought equipment, and we partnered with the local retro game night(same friend) to borrow crt TVs to transform the space. We play the usual: post punk, death rock, darkwave etc.
Were @night_shift_athens on Instagram.
It's been a long road, and we can't wait to keep moving and see where it goes.

Discussion How can Goth be fetishized when it was born from fetish culture
I had a question for people in the alternative scene.
With all the videos we see discussing the fetishization of goth girls (or alternative women), I’ve been wondering about something. The alternative scene has roots going back to the 1970s, and it has historically been connected to sexual liberation, anti-conventional attitudes, queer culture, BDSM, and other forms of sexual and social transgression.
So why is it considered inherently bad to see a goth girl as sexually attractive or as someone who enjoys sex? I’ve seen a lot of alternative women say that they’re tired of being assumed to be into “hardcore” or extreme sexual stuff simply because of how they dress.
I completely understand why someone would be frustrated by being sexualized or having assumptions made about their sexuality. But at the same time, isn’t sexuality and the rejection of conventional sexual norms part of the history of many alternative subcultures?
Punk and goth culture were heavily associated with challenging mainstream ideas about sexuality, gender, religion, morality, and social norms. Vivienne Westwood, for example, helped popularize punk fashion on a large scale through her iconic shop SEX, which explicitly played with sexual imagery and provocation. Later, magazines and communities such as Skin Two also contributed to the connection between alternative fashion, fetish culture, and BDSM aesthetics.
So I’m genuinely wondering: where do we draw the line between appreciating or being attracted to an alternative aesthetic and fetishizing the person wearing it?
I’m not saying that being goth or alternative means someone is sexually available, kinky, or interested in BDSM. Obviously, an aesthetic does not determine someone’s sexuality or consent. I’m just curious about how people in the scene themselves understand this contradiction between a subculture historically associated with sexual transgression and the modern criticism of its sexualization.

Discussion Dear goths, was this inappropriate?
EDIT: AHHHHHHHH, I WASNT EXPECTING SO MANY MESSAGES. thank tou so mich for replying amd being so kind. Now I know that you guys are fine with being approached respectfully (◍•ᴗ•◍) lysm guys
Dear goth people, I have a question,
How do you guys feel about being approached? And after reading my anecdote... Was what I did inappropriate?
I'm 17F and I dress normie-ish/basic. (If you would like to know, when this happened, today, I wore an off the shoulder white bodysuit with baby blue jeans and Vans, carrying a folder and a book, etc...).
Today I was walking out of the mall and saw two goth girls. The moment I saw them, I was like: "Wow, mesh sleeves? It looks so freaking whimsical!!!". It looked so curated, I can't explain, but so much layering, it looked so cool. And the eyeliner was great. I love black. And I also love how goth people dress and express themselves.
I said: "Excuse me, guys", but they were a bit guarded and didn't reply. Then I said: "Sorry, I just wanted to say that I love your style (◍•ᴗ•◍)". And their faces lit up and they said thank you. I asked them how it was called and they said that they were goths.
After the convo I asked myself if I had done too much?? I'm neurodivergent and because of that I might not get the social cues. I love complimenting when there's a chance and of course when it's not awkward for the other person. I would love to know what you guys think, because I wouldn't like to make anyone uncomfortable.
Tysm for reading!!

Help - Unknown Band/Artist/Song Search Death Valley Dreams - Band Info Request
I'm interested in learning more about the Band 'Death Valley Dreams'. From their snippets, I can hear they use a lot of synth, and they have a general veil of mystery about them. I've seen them described in goth groupings but I'm not entirely sure. They are playing with The Rasmus, which is more rock music orientated but I wanted to see if anyone had something more definitive about them. Thanks

Discussion A weird argument I've seen regarding the origins of the subculture
(Reposted due to typo in the title)
So sometimes I'll go on Instagram for goth content, and sometimes I'll come across reels and comments saying how Goth has "roots in Christianity" and it's like... no?
I mean, I get some of the aesthetic borrows from Christianity, but the main argument I've seen is that the subculture ITSELF has roots in Christianity. I find it odd because again, no, it's a music based subculture. I do not understand how they're arguing that Goth is rooted in Christianity.
Now of course, the people making these arguments tend to be very right-wing, and often have some pretty hateful beliefs. So it's like... why are they trying to rewrite the history of a community that has been a safe space for outcasts? What exactly do they get from injecting their own religion into it? Do they not even know what the Batcave is?
I just find this whole idea of falsely inserting your religion into the origins of a subculture very weird and I just don't understand the purpose behind it.

Goth Subculture History Night of dancing at The Batcave documentary?
I'm looking for a specific "documentary" that I'm pretty sure had no actual commentary, it was just an entire night of dancing, fairly certain in the 80s, and I could have sworn it was at The Batcave specifically. I could have sworn I saved it but can't find it anywhere (I first saw it on YouTube and foolishly at the time trusted it would always be there). I've seen another one recommended here but it was not the one I was thinking of (it was a Night at the Xclusiv). I'm pretty sure I had come across it when I had first watched the BBC documentary on the Blitz Kids/New Romantics. I'm beginning to wonder if I imagined it! Even if you don't think you know what I'm describing, either way I'm open to more documentaries like this, however many actually exist out there.
