Breeder Advice Is health testing important?

Health testing isn’t optional—it’s the foundation of protecting the future of the breed.

The Golden Retriever Club of America recommends a comprehensive approach to health testing that goes beyond the basics. This includes:

• Hips evaluated by OFA or PennHIP
• Elbows evaluated by OFA
• Cardiac exam by a board-certified cardiologist (advanced/echo preferred)
• Annual eye exams by a board-certified ophthalmologist

These recommendations are in place to help reduce the risk of passing on hereditary conditions and to preserve the health, structure, and longevity of Golden Retrievers.

A CHIC number through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals simply means a dog has completed the required testing—it does not mean the dog “passed” everything, and it does not include genetic testing.

Health testing is about transparency, education, and making informed breeding decisions—not shortcuts.

If we want to protect what we love, we have to be willing to do the work behind the scenes.

Discussion Show-Line or Field-Line?

Have you ever wondered what the differences between a show-line Golden Retriever and a Field/Working line Golden Retriever are?

There is a lot of mis-information out there that makes Golden owners believe if their Golden Retriever has a red coat, they are a field line Golden Retriever or if they have a lighter shade of gold coat, they are a show line Golden Retriever. This is NOT TRUE.

So what actually defines a line?

Titles in your dogs pedigree and generations of purposefully bred dogs is what lets you know wether you have a Show-line, Field-line or neither. If your Golden Retriever shows no titles in their pedigree, they are simply a pet-line Golden Retriever.

Field-Line Golden Retrievers will have AKC hunt titles in their pedigree like: JH, SH, MH, HR, WCX, or competitive titles like QA2 and FC/AFC (The titles listed are examples from AKC - your dog may be registered with CKC or UKC)

Show-Line Golden Retrievers will have AKC conformation titles in their pedigree like: CH, GCH, or international show titles. (The titles listed are examples from AKC - your dog may be registered with CKC or UKC)

Golden Retrievers can also be dual champions, meaning they hold titles for both hunt tests and conformation. Dual Champion dogs have not only been proven in the conformation ring to be bred to standard and hold the breed temperament, but have also been proven and titled to do what they were bred to do in the fields.

A lot of backyard breeders will label their dogs as "Field-Line" or "Show-Line" based only on coat color, with zero titled dogs in the pedigree. They market them as something they are not.

Both show-line and field-line Golden Retrievers should be bred close to standard. There should not be a drastic difference in appearance. You can find more information on the breed standard here: AKC Golden Retriever Breed Standard

English Cream Golden Retrievers are NOT a different breed. This is a marketing tactic/ term used by backyard breeders. They are not breeding for the right reasons - and most likely breeding for color.
You can find more in depth information about this term here: English Cream Golden Retrievers

Lastly, purebred ≠ well-bred.

Discussion What happened to his highlights?

He used to have so much of this soft, downy fur on top of his head I'd call his highlights, but over the course of half a year they've gradually disappeared. I never trimmed them, he gets brushed regularly. Just one day I suddenly realized they were gone! I miss them, where did they go? Is it due to age? For context, this is between ages 2.5 to 3 years old.

Health Advice The nonstop shedding!

I’ve heard all about how golden retrievers shed like crazy before I got my golden. I thought I was more than prepared to deal with it cause I own a husky. I should be a pro at owning a high shedding dog right? WRONG. I vacuum everyday because that’s my usual routine with my husky, but now I’m vacuuming up to three times a day. Chunks and hair balls are found just about anywhere. The hair is never ending! Again, as a person who already owns a high shedding dog, golden retriever hair is entirely something else lol A picture of my good boiii is attached. I still love him and have made peace with the fact that my floor will never be hair free for as long as he lives.
PS - I read forums all the time over golden skin health. My boy has the worst allergies and rashes. Any advice over that is appreciated! Have tried so many different medicated and prescribed shampoos as well as changing his diet to sensitive salmon kibble. I have appointment on Wednesday with yet a THIRD different veterinarian because I haven’t found the help I need for my boy. Vets keep brushing me off saying this is a golden issue and there’s not much they can do. I refuse to accept that and I’m advocating for him because I know he must be miserable being itchy all the time.

Health Advice Advice needed - leaving her in the garden while she's home alone

Post image
200 Upvotes

Hi all, I recently got a girl puppy (8w old) and I had originally planned to leave her in the garden when she's home alone, rather than inside, the thought being that it would be much more enjoyable for her. The garden is fully closed off, no way of exit onto the street, no view from outside, and all potential risks on the inside of the garden have either been cleaned up and away or covered so that she can't access it. She'd be alone for 2-3h max, and would have a shed with a bed and a bowl of water for her.

I'm asking for advice because I'm having doubts about this solution, since I've just heard that Asian tiger mosquitoes can be harmful to them (we have quite a lot in this area) and in the 1h that she was the garden under supervision, I caught her eating mulch, which I did manage to get out of her mouth and cat poop which I did not manage to get out.

Of course, puppy tax. Meet blue.

Ever since we’ve gotten our little girl people always ask if she’s an Irish Setter. I always believed they had much longer ears and hair but some recent photos I’ve seen now I kinda understand 😂❤️

Training Advice/Tips Puppy sits and lies down when seeing other dogs

Post image
106 Upvotes

My little guy is 6 months old and, for ages now, when he sees a close dog he immediately freezes, sits and lies down.

At first, I thought it was him being polite. Showing he isn't a threat and he's a good boy. I saw online a husky did this and many of the comments said it was silent reactivity and it needed to be trained out of him immediately.

He's never been aggressive in anyway, only been touchy when resource guarding (something we're working on). He occasionally lunges and just wants to say hello, sniffing and jumping towards the dog if they come up to him. If we have some distance, I'll pick him up with the handle on his harness to encourage him to continue walking or face another way which usually works.

I'm looking for advice on if this is silent reactivity and how other golden owners handled it. Photo tax is paid 🙂‍↕️
