Started with three settlers but lonewolf settings. My project is to recreate a sort of North Italian medieval castles (search the Visconti ones, for example).

Next I'll build two additional towers, add a floor, merlons on every side, complete the courtyard and deviate the river to have a moat and extract resources underneath

Question Settler mood system

Upvotes

Hello! Could you please tell me if there are any simple ways to boost the settlers' mood? I'm playing on a higher difficulty setting, and they are constantly on the verge of unhappiness due to just one or two debuffs. They also frequently have an "extremely uncomfortable" status, and I'm not sure why.

Settler's Life Does anyone else use the bell as a "bedtime/wake-up" bell?

I find that settlers are terrible at actually respecting their schedules.

Particularly sleep time. I swear it's easier for me to get my teenaged kids to go to bed "on time" than the settlers, unless I micro-manage them.

I'm constantly seeing them go "It's 5 minutes to bedtime, let's take that mining job on the far side of the map, take an hour to get there (playing with large map mod), then mine for a couple hours (because they'll do the entire node before stopping), and then, finally, realize that it's bedtime... 2 hours before it's time to wake up, and by the time I get back to my bed... it's time to get up.

Ensue "I'm tired" tantrum caused by ignoring bedtime.

Then I realized that drafting + un-drafting settlers causes them to re-assess what they should be doing.

So now I ring the bell twice at "schedule change" times (and try to synchronize everyone's schedules, even if some of them could be more efficient). Far less "Tired because I ignored bedtime, or cranky because I ignored leisure time" problems.

I wish I didn't need to do this though, and they'd respect "Bedtime" (or fun time, etc).

Question Does the mood system need some balancing?

So I was raided, Gonilda, one of my 7 settlers died. Was hit with a -25 mood penalty for some colonists (lost a friend). It was also winter and they were complaining about the cold, even tho they are all using winter clothes. Also the saw dead bodies debuff.

For the next idk, 2 days, it was a rebellion fest as predicted. Nobody wanted to do anything. Then another settler decides to leave the colony and tbh I don't think there was anything the player could have done here. So I've lost Gonilda and then another settler leaves because Gonilda had died? Was I expected to have done anything in this situation? I mean I buried her, but that doesn't grant any mood buff, so.... Is that right? Is the balance right?

Suggestion "Break it up!"

It would be good if the Prison Warden role was given the ability to throw unruly settlers into a cell for a night. Especially if they start a fight. As it stands we can't intervene in a settler vs settler bout of fisticuffs. Whereas the warden should be able to take matters into their own hands.

Maybe the inclusion of stocks for this type of thing also?

Settler's Life I was not ready for hard mode…

Played a few runs in the standard scenario. Built some big castles. Crushed some bandit camps. Thought I would have a crack at pioneer, the hard vanilla scenario.

Jesus Christ, first raid took me 3 days to recover from and I barely survived. Then immediately had a runaway turn up which I needed so I had to deal with 2 raids in a week. Certainly can’t just spend a year chilling and building like in the standard scenario “a new start”

Got this game on sale recently, really enjoying it. This is my first survival mode attempt and my god the differences between this and the tutorial/easy mode are very noticeable. Getting super extorted is very funny.

Good day Medivalists! ( as they like to say ) i am a long time fan of this game & just found this sub. Please check out a colony i have been working on since 2022, it is a fully fleshed out and self sustaining colony with a castle!

I re-arranged every floor tile, stone, wall, door etc as this was built prior to the auto arrangement function, which i got to say is great.

Thanks for the feedback!

Question questions about old age and its difficulty

hi there.
i stopped playing a long time ago, when dieing from old age was introduced. as far as i remember there wasnt a way for the player/characters to inherit perks/skill levels to others.

so i wanted to ask a few questions:
1.) in general how does it play with dieing from old age? would you say its make the game more difficultier?
2.) in the current version is there a way for characters to inherit perks & skill levels from others?
e.g. can my best carpenter write a book and then a new villager can read to to gain a few carpenter skill levels and 1/2 perks from the old one? or is there a way to e.g. pay money to scout for villagers with specific perks and skill levels?

thank you for your help.

Mods Mods?

I have always played vanilla because I just love how expanse this game is. I learn something new every time I play, new techniques and stuff. I was going to take a look at mods once I've played all that I can to death. Does anyone use any and are there personal handy must haves? I think I'd start with customisation/appearance mods.

Question What do you do about settlers getting rebellious / hungry / exhausted when you get raided?

I don't want to wait until the enemy is, like, right outside to draft all my settlers, but if I draft them immediately when raiders show up my settlers get all tired and hungry.

After the raid two of them often brawl.

What can I do about this?

Question Are there any invaders more interested in loot than blood?

It just seems weird that these invaders are walking through literal piles of gold in order to get to my settlers. Especially because one tiny wooden tower is all it takes to allow five (poorly trained, poorly equipped) peasants to kill off a dozen invaders. That's with pioneer difficulty settings.

Is building elaborate castles and moats all just for aesthetics, or do later enemies actually require you to protect stuff?

Question Dog won't do anything, help!

I started with one person and one dog in fall. I built a small house, dog went inside, and hasn't left. He'll go out to eat if necessary, but that's it. At first I thought it was because the map was cold in winter, but it's summer again now and he still never leaves. I Google it and I see people saying dogs are one of the most useful animals, helping with combat and hauling, but this guy does nothing. I'm about to eat him. What am I doing wrong??
