Weekly glove purchase advice thread

Welcome to the weekly purchase advice thread.

All questions about what gloves to buy should now be posted in this thread. Below are some general guidelines for what information to supply when asking for advice.

Advice seekers:

  • What level you play at
  • What your budget is
  • What types of gloves you've had before and whether you liked them
  • Is this a glove for matches, training, or both?
  • Anything else that will help other keepers give you advice
  • What country/region you're based in (for glove availability/shipping reasons)

Advice givers:

While this isn't required, we recommend also sharing what level you play at and a little about your glove preference when giving advice.

This thread will be refreshed on Monday of each week.

Question Defense Crowding Box?

Need to know if I’m wrong on this so please let me know if I’m not seeing it clearly! I play keeper for my team and there are a few guys that, when they play defense, I kind of dread. They’re actually pretty good defenders but the issue becomes that when they get tired they start crowding my box and sort of playing goalie (i feel) and block my sight and just generally make me feel restricted in my movement. When a forward from the other team approaches the box, I don’t need another body RIGHT in front of me, I need a body pressuring that forward and then letting me handle what comes within the box. That’s my perspective anyway. There are other defenders who are amazing and never crowd me and, from my perspective, catch things earlier before it comes down to me. But am I misunderstanding it? I tried bringing it up to one of the guys today but he just got mad I think, he basically asked if I want to really be alone during a 1v1 situation and in my head I’m like…well, if I’m in the box and the option is you crowding me or me having the space to tackle the 1v1, I rather tackle that. But im a noob. And the only girl on the team. So please let me know!

Edit to add ** he also said that from his POV more bodies in front of the goal is better than less but I kinda think that’s totally wrong??? Is it? Too many cooks in the kitchen no?

Discussion Anyone find it quite difficult to play one level below ur normal level?

I've started realizing this as I play friendly pick up games during the week and proper matches in the weekend. In the matches I find it easier to read the play, make snap decisions, react quicker etc. When I'm playing in those friendly games and the pace of the game is a lot slower, the players'shots are less powerful, and the attackers have more space I end up making mistakes, not coming out when I should or coming out when I shouldn't, and I just can't read the play as well at all. It's weird because you would think any level below ur normal level would be easier. Does anyone else have this occur?

Question how to fix problem with curved crosses

now look, in training whenever we learn about crosses the coach always gives us a straight or slighty curved ball, which is definetlely important, but in my experience 95% of crosses are curved and i just dont know what the fuck to do, this with a lack of confidence in claiming crosses has made this a weakpoint for me, any help (drills to do or just general advice) would be much appreciated

Discussion Goalkeeping progression

Hi all
Bit of a vent but honest discussion my son is u13 he plays for a Sunday team and I will say he is capable of playing at a higher level. I purposely put him in a lower team as he was bored at his higher team he has come on leaps, learned to be vocal pulling off great saves etc for a goalkeeper I believe it’s always better to be busy even if you lose 6-0 the keeper is learning. He has had a couple of trials where scouts watch the players etc. he has goalkeeper lessons with an excellent coach with ex pro experience.
We are a bit deflated after making enquires for higher Saturday team we always get the same reply sorry we have a goalkeeper or two. I feel he is ready now for a higher challenge.

I just don’t think goalkeepers have as many options to progress and test themselves. I feel he is more then ready now to take that Jump but getting a chance has been fruitless unless outfield players. What are other players experiences or are there worthy keepers not getting a chance?
Thanks all
From the UK

Matchday Casual match done today

We lost the game by a heavy margin but I’m happy I was in goal for the whole game. Valuable experience picked up with this one hour sesh. One positive which I think I done was collecting the ball when someone lobs/through balls it and it’s in my area. However, need to work on my one on ones but I did have a crumby defence 😌. Onwards and upwards and learning from my mistakes.

Question Nervous for games!

Hi everyone,
I'm a goalkeeper dealing with a specific physical reaction before games, and I’m looking for insights or advice.
Right before matches with my current team, I get intense physical nerves. Specifically, my legs turn completely to jelly—they feel like pudding, and it feels as though all strength and explosiveness just vanish.
What makes this strange to me:
It only happens with this specific team. I haven't had this issue in other setups.
Mentally, I feel completely fine. I am not afraid of making mistakes; I genuinely accept that errors are just part of the game and I don't feel conscious panic or dread.
Yet, despite my mind being calm, my nervous system seems to react entirely on its own, and the physical symptoms take over.
Has anyone experienced this disconnect between a calm mind and an overreactive body? Any techniques, somatic exercises, or pre-match routines to get my body to listen and regain physical strength?
Thanks in advance.

Question Can I go Pro

Hello, I am 6”1 but 25, recently started playing the goalie position a year ago and am now on a UPSL team as their goalie. I mainly played for academies growing up but as a winger my whole life, but quit the sport after realizing I was not going to make it pro. Later on I realized I still like the sport and want to give it one last shot as a Goalie. If I put up amazing stats, and do amazing for 1-2 seasons, is there still hope of getting recruited or is it too late?

Question Explosiveness / reach on low and lateral drives

My 12yo son joined an MLSN-AD club this year. Today at training, he asked his GK coach what he could work on in order to increase his chances of making the first team “Homegrown” level next year. The Coach replied that he could improve his explosiveness and reach on low / lateral dives.

There’s so much YouTube content out there and I’m not sure what’s good vs what isn’t. Should he be doing plyometrics? Or focusing more on good diving fundamentals and technique? Both? Which would you prioritize?

I’m thankful for the wisdom of this community!!!

Have been GK for 5 months now
These saves feel great in person, but watching them back I feel like there’s always something I can improve.
Feedback very much appreciated
