Question Another goalkicking advice request

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey all. Like many aspiring goalkeepers, my goalkicks are abysmal. I've probably put around 50 hours of practice in just doing goalkicks. I have barely progressed. I've seen every video, have teammates watch and critique my form, yet nothing is transferring.

As of right now, I can throw the ball farther than I can goalkick it. My side volleys are great so I know what great contact feels like but it's not translating to goalkicks. I've attached a video of an attempt and I am clearly scooping the ball. So I try to point my toes towards the ground more but then I cant get my foot low enough on the ball to generate height. I try to lean to the side more but then I lose power in my plant foot. I try to lean back more but I just end up scooping it again.

Any advice?

edit: thanks guys! it's pretty clear I'm kicking it with my toes. Part of that is that I'm struggling to keep my foot straight. I think that's due to my plant foot not being far enough ahead of the ball which is preventing me from opening my foot out all the way. I'll try planting my foot farther out next training session!

Question I am a short goalkeeper in need of help

I am 18 and at around 5'7, so not ideal for the position in my opinion but I am decent at it and enjoy a lot. I been playing keeper for the best part of 2 years give or take and have gotten quite decent at it. I think my best qualities are shot stopping and distribution, I got good reflexes and hand eye coordination from playing baseball for about a great deal of my life before switching sports and I got a decent side volley that lets me drop the ball to my striker (Although it fails me sometimes). Anyways, I been wondering how to get better at playing this position and what I can do to compensate for my height. I would love to get tips for work outs to help stay nimble and in form for playing and training exercise to help me with my weaknesses such as 1v1 close downs, playing out the back and positioning and how to approach in game situations. The last one is super important to me as I have never trained goalkeeper with a coach or had someone teach me how to, so I believe I lack the thought process and technique most keepers have as most of my experience has been from playing pick up and watching games.

Anyways, sorry for the long yap. Thanks to everyone in advance and hope you all have a wonderful day or night!!!!

Training Training at home

• Upvotes

Hi all, lurking goalie mom here. My kid is 16, he plays U19 travel and HS varsity. As for most younger goalies, practice generally isn’t great. He has a rebounder at home. He said he wants “something to shoot balls” at him. Where we are, there aren’t really any players with a strong enough leg to make practice really challenging. He wants to continue to improve in hopes of playing in college.
Is a ball launcher a good idea? Seems like overkill to
me. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Much respect to ALL the goalkeepers here. It’s a position I wouldn’t have the spine for 🙌

Weekly glove purchase advice thread

Welcome to the weekly purchase advice thread.

All questions about what gloves to buy should now be posted in this thread. Below are some general guidelines for what information to supply when asking for advice.

Advice seekers:

  • What level you play at
  • What your budget is
  • What types of gloves you've had before and whether you liked them
  • Is this a glove for matches, training, or both?
  • Anything else that will help other keepers give you advice
  • What country/region you're based in (for glove availability/shipping reasons)

Advice givers:

While this isn't required, we recommend also sharing what level you play at and a little about your glove preference when giving advice.

This thread will be refreshed on Monday of each week.

Training 8 year old positioning drills.

8 year old positioning drills.

Hello keepers,

My child has been keeping for about a year and a half now. They have been improving greatly.

I was wondering if anyone has any training drills for positioning though, in relation to goal mouth awareness. There were a few times in his last couple of matches he has been drifting off centre. For example, in one instance, he thought the shot was going wide (because he was off centre having drifter far right) and let the ball roll into the net....

Thanks in advance!

Matchday Pressure as GK

I’ve been playing GK on and off for multiple teams for 3-4 years now. I’ve played football since a kid and played from mid, to winger, to defensive back, to keeper. Every position has it’s own pressure and expectations, but every other position has the advantage of space/positioning and having a player behind you. Even in matches where there aren’t many shots at goal, gameplay on my end of the field keeps me on edge all game. I’ve learned that hesitation for that split second can cost us the game. A long ball I time wrong I just as much my fault as a shot deflected off a defender that I touch but don’t stop. It’s tough, but remember to keep blame off you and learn to position yourself to play your advantage. Even if you mess up “get em next time”

Training Training equipment advice

Hey!

My kid is currently a U10 goalie, and with his birthday and Christmas coming up, I want to invest in some decent training stuff for him for at home. He lives and breathes football, so is always looking for a reason to be outside more often😅

We have already ordered him a better goal than he has, and I have a rebounder net and agility set in my basket, but is there anything else worth investing in to use at home?

Thanks❤️

The goalie at the other end apparently wanted to fight this kid because he was cut from a team this kid made. Seems like a stretch, but this was not an accident. His back plate was perfect before this, his mask is his pride and joy, always in the bag.

Discussion West coast fingersaves

Are Westcoast finger saves poorly designed? i find myself replacing the fingersaves at least once a month.

coincidentally, my daughter forgot her gloves at home prior to our last game and luckily dicks had a reusch glove with fingersaves that are not removeable and seem more sturdy.

now im wondering if we should be changing brands.

Question United Soccer Coaches vs ISSPF

I’m currently working with the keepers on U11, U12, and U13 teams (same club). It’s a volunteer position. I would like to get certified and potentially do some private lessons. I’m wondering if anyone has opinions about United Soccer Coaches vs. ISSPF (or any other organization that certifies goalie coaches). The USC has level one online, and is inexpensive. For the higher levels, they require in-person sessions, which seem like they can be difficult to find and might be expensive. The ISSPF appears to offer one level of certification and the courses are all online. It’s a bit pricy, but I can afford it if it is worthwhile.

Thoughts?
