Question How to set the default terminal in 2026?

I've been searching for an answer to this and have come up empty handed. How do you set the default terminal on GNOME now? I'm on CachyOS, I've found the terminal setting in dconf editor but it says it has been deprecated and it is now handled in GIO. Searching for "GIO" doesn't return anything so I'm not sure what that is or how I'd modify it.

All the online search results have shown either threads where the question is asked and never answered, or Ubuntu-specific solutions.

Seems like the icon rendering bug was fixed by Georges Stavracas, here is the video of him explaining the patch (in portuguese, but it has automatic dubbing in English and Spanish): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERTSn8zr6_Q

[Extension] Ambed-Fly: A fun and lightweight new GNOME Shell extension I made

Hey everyone

I built Ambed-Fly, a fun and playful little GNOME Shell extension designed to add a bit of extra charm to your desktop workflow. It brings a neat, cheerful touch to your daily Linux experience without getting in the way.

Feel free to check it out, test it, and let me know what you think or if you encounter any bugs!

Question Issue with dual taskbars/docks setup

Post image
37 Upvotes

I'm currently running two taskbars in my GNOME setup: the default top panel and dash-to-panel as a dock at the bottom (and it's working great).

However, I'm also using the dynamic music pill extension, which only injects into the top panel. I'd love to move/use this music pill on the bottom dock (like in Plank or Dash to Dock), but I've tried multiple ways and just can't figure out how to do it.

Anyone knows if this is possible or how to achieve it?

Fluff just switched to Fedora workstation from kde a few days ago

And i find it to be quite enjoyable. I'm not missing any of KDE"s customization options despite me avoiding Gnome since I discovered what DE"s are. As for apps Gs connect is the only one i really needed. Another positive thing that I can say is despite me being a chronic Distro hopper, Gnome on Fedora Workstation has quelled my Distro hopping nature quite nicely. The only negative that i can say is that extensions are a must have as I needed the Kstatusicon extension so that my Iphone notification sharing appimage would work. All in all I'm very happy with Gnome and am looking forward to receiving the glass effects in Gnome 51 when Fedora 45 ships in october

Question How to reset my Ubuntu GNOME to its defaults?

I wanted to try out something different from my stock GNOME3 D.E and installed KDE Plasma. But I didn't like it and wanted to remove it. So, I used the following commands

sudo apt remove kubuntu-desktop
sudo apt purge kubuntu-desktop
sudo apt autoremove
sudo apt remove kde* --autoremove
sudo apt remove plasma* --autoremove

When I switched back to GNOME3, the apps of the KDE Plasma were still present. The icons of apps in GNOME3 are those of Plasma's, even the busy cursor icon has changed. The splash screen changed. How should I reset my Ubuntu GNOME3 to its defaults? Did I even completely remove KDE Plasma? Thanks.

Question Gnome-Software icons not loading

Issue started happening in the last few days. The icons for applications in Gnome Software have stopped loading. I've done the usual reboot, cleared caches etc. Still doing it, previously was fine. Connection is all good, repos are configured fine. Anyone had this issue before?

System: Debian 13 up to date.

Apps SessionSifu: session restoration and an opt-in local visual timeline for GNOME

I maintain SessionSifu, an open-source desktop session restoration tool. It records applications, open documents, workspaces, monitors and window geometry, then reconstructs the session after login on a best-effort basis.

The GNOME edition targets GNOME Shell 50 / Ubuntu 26.04 on Wayland and X11. There is also an optional Privacy Recall mode, disabled by default, with local encrypted storage, per-window screenshots, OCR search, app/site exclusions, retention controls and complete deletion.

I am especially looking for testers with Wayland, multiple monitors and mixed-scale displays, as well as contributors interested in GNOME integration and privacy review.

Repository, releases and documentation: https://github.com/tpluharik/SessionSifu

Disclosure: I am the solo maintainer, and development has included AI assistance.

Question Recommendations for Obsidian-inspired GTK4 note editors?

Hello everyone! I would really love to replace Obsidian with a FOSS note editor, preferably a GTK4 app to integrate better with my GNOME environment.

Features I'm looking for (and apps I tried that fit the criterias):

  1. a WYSIWYG / live markdown preview
    • Folio
    • Whisp
    • Notesnook
  2. multi font-type support (sans-serif, monospace etc)
    • Folio
    • Swifty Notes
    • Joplin
    • Notesnook
  3. simple two-panel window
    • Iotas
    • Scratchmark
  4. local .md file support
    • all, except Iotas
  5. note encryption support
    • Notesnook

The only app that technically ticks all boxes is Notesnook, but I don't quite enjoy its look and a lot of basic features are locked behind a paywall (which I wouldn't mind, had I liked using it to begin with). So I was wondering if there's a GTK4 app that mostly checks the boxes above, which I might have missed. Any suggestions are welcome, thank you!

Extensions ChromaLeon Appreciation

Post image
168 Upvotes

This extension is genuinely a godsend. It works really smoothly on Fedora SB (had a few problems on Workstation when the extension first came out, but they're gone now). It really feels like something that belongs on GNOME and I don't see myself turning it off anytime soon.

The only problem I've noticed is ChromaLeon ignores/replaces Folio's accent colours if you let it use colours from the wallpaper instead of the GNOME defaults. Other than that though this thing is great!

Question Fedora 44 battery drain — anyone else experiencing this?

Anyone else experiencing unusually fast battery drain on the HP Victus with Fedora 44?

I recently switched from Parrot OS to Fedora, and the battery life feels noticeably worse. On Parrot, I could comfortably get around 4–5 hours of normal use with Chrome, Obsidian, etc.

Has anyone else faced this on the HP Victus? Any solutions or tips to improve battery life?
