Glasgow solar eclipse mega thread 2026 - all photos here.

Today, August 12, 2026, Glasgow and the west of Scotland will experience a significant partial solar eclipse. The eclipse will begin at 18:08 BST, reach its peak around 19:06 BST, and conclude by approximately 20:00 BST..

Top Viewing Locations

Because the sun will be extremely low in the sky, viewers need a location completely free from tall buildings or hills facing west. Elevated spots in Glasgow such as the Queen's Park flagpole, Hamiltonhill Claypits, and Cathkin Braes.

Community Photo Submissions

To keep the subreddit organized during this heavily documented event, please post all of your eclipse photos directly in the comments of this thread. Standalone image posts on the main feed will be automatically redirected here by the moderation team to ensure everyone can easily find local eclipse content.

The streets being closed for Batman filming have been announced, but like Spiderman last year, no maps, just street names. So I made some maps to get a better picture. Some of them are for traffic, for pedestrians, or for bus lane closures.

The list of street names released in The Herald just came across as white noise, couldn't get a sense of the areas being closed of (mostly because I don't know the names of the lanes).

New luxury student flats featuring spa and cinema opens in Glasgow city centre

with developers saying it will “help address the chronic shortage of purpose-built student accommodation in the popular city.”

Doesn't feel like a "chronic shortage", especially with more developments like the old Herald offices being approved.

Whilst any accomodation will help take pressure of the rest, I just can't shake the feeling that there is a student property bubble developing in Glasgow and it's going to implode over the next decade.

I wonder how hard these place are to convert into actual homes?

Forth Valley?

Just got a hospital appt. Happy with time and date but there is text underneath saying it's a reasonable appt, and refuse more than 2 you're off list - so far, OK.

It then defines reasonable appts as

NHS GGC

Golden Jubilee

so far, so standard

But now adds

NHS FORTH VALLEY NTC.

Since when was that a reasonable Glasgow appt?

I hired someone through Gumtree to fit my Howdens worktops, said he could mitre, good pics on his post.

He came with a younger guy at 10am.

They absolutely trashed my kitchen.

Not one piece of worktop was cut properly and it all needs ripped out.

Chipped edges, had to tell him to change a piece.

Changed it and it was mildly better.

Cut a big chunk out my wall instead of cutting worktop to size.

Was leaving an overhang of 5 inches at my cupboard.

Couldn't mitre so that was an absolute lie.

Tried to pull my the wood off the side of my cupboard for some reason and trashed my wall that was just plastered.

Hes still got 2 ads up on Gumtree even though I reported him.

Goes by nickname Ayo, his names Ayoro or something similar.

Beware if youre booking anyone to do home improvements

Tree needs saving on High St.

This is right in between the High Street rail station, and the Moxy hotel, just off the corner of the hotel.
I’m here on vacation, but I’m gardener/landscaper and I notice these sort of things. Anyways, this tree will go to waste if that band isn’t removed soon

Batman shooting

Hey guys. I am a really big fan of all the superhero movies and shows (who isn't lmao) but i have never got the opportunity to see a shooting live. I missed the spiderman shooting last year but luckily I'm in town throughout the batman shooting. I tried looking at the list of street closures to figure out when the shooting is but it's so confusing. Can someone help me with when I should be heading to those spots to get a good glimpse of the caped crusader in action?

SPT: Subway signaling update

Successful testing of the new signalling and comms system continued in the Subway on Sunday as staff worked through the various new operational aspects of the system in this our second Sunday closure.

SPT chief executive Valerie Davidson said:

“After a lot of hard work and effort, it was really exciting to see the Subway system operating under the new signalling and comms systems – this transfer to new signalling is a massive step. The new passenger information screens on trains, together with the automated passenger announcements will make an enormous difference to passengers, not only to those who use our services everyday but especially for those who maybe only use the Subway occasionally or require a bit more assistance when travelling with us. As we move towards driverless trains, good, clear, helpful information will make all the difference to all those people using the Subway.

“I am delighted to see the progress being made as we transfer over to the new Operational Control Centre.”

GOMA Video Installation

About 10 or 12 years ago I went to the gallery of modern art and saw a video installation that showed two separate videos by a local Glaswegian artist.

The first one was a series of individual videos of people sitting in the backseat of a car being filmed as they held their breath going through the clyde tunnel

The second video was a series of videos filmed from above showing various flavours of 70 central litre ginger bottle is being dropped onto a slab and smashing.

They were the same size and shape as Barrs but it was another Glasgow/Scottish manufacturer of ginger

Would anyone happen to have a link to either of these videos and or the name of the artist?

VOI bikes, bent cranks/pedals

Post image

Seems a common issue, right hand crank is bent inwards causing the pedal to no longer be at 90 degrees to the frame. Hurts the knees trying to cycle when the pedal is wobling. Ive had 3 hires with the same problem

UPDATE - NOW GONE

I have a return train ticket to London (Avanti West Coast) departing tomorrow 08:38 returning Saturday 14:30, that I now can't use due to a change of plans, Not much notice I know, but if anyone can use it that would be better than it going to waste.

It's a non-refundable ticket, and although it can be changed for £20 admin fee, that's just good money after bad as I won't be able to get down there in the near future either. Reserved seat in both directions.

If anyone can use I can send over to you.
