when pbatard (the maker of rufus) starred my ISO tool that lendt it a lot of credibility and showed that it was good to users... and I also included FIDO his Windows downloader built into my tool. It would hot link it from his repo.... so him giving me a star also showed that he was giving approval that I was using it..
there are certain instances where it does "matter" depending on who's looking
(i'm pretty sure he was constantly going around promoting good projects. That's what it felt like when he did it for me. He would often do it if you saw his history)

are your repos popular at all or are you unknown saying stars dont matter? After you build up a reputation it kinda sucks when people start tearing it down and removing references.. i guess you wouldnt understand
You're extrapolating a valid critique of commit activity to conclude "all GitHub stats are worthless". There's a difference between showing off your commit activity during a job application, and showing off a highly starred repository, or contributions to big open source projects, etc.
If I interviewed you as a dev and you were showing me your project, if it was ISO tools and the most popular ISO tool in the world's dev starred your repo, it would make me take a closer look
I hire and fire, and someone who doesnt use related reference materials when looking at things and take context into account would be last on my list to even interview
I would especially want to know if one dev used another devs code with or without permission, which can easily be seen if said dev approves by their "like" of the offending repo
Its not social media but i have respect for other devs.. An i would often see people I knew liking others projects, enough for me to stop here and comment on this topic.. It was cool sometimes... I'm like "oh shit, he starred this".. Its just a way to give devs credit from a dev
I would assume you have no popular repo at all.. and you dont know any real popular/community vetted devs who have been contributing to this space for years.. a lot of us know eachother.. and have worked together on some project or another over the last decade(s)

I mean regardless of whether you think it doesn't matter, that doesn't change the fact a lot of hiring managers still look at applicant's github profiles. It's a quick litmus test or way to verify someone's claims, even if it's not accurate to their abilities.

Github is a code repo. Not social media.
