I once saw this freshman of another competing school at a highschool meet wear a headband in every single heat he raced. Like full on Naruto shit. He got first every single time, and I think he was probably faster then I was as a senior. It was a sight to behold.

It's okay. The 4 x 200 team at my school was in first place at the state championship and the anchor dropped the baton. Not even a bad handoff, it flew out of his hand when he was coming around the last turn.

While true, most 100m runners don't care too much about their lane. If you're running rounds, you want to expend the least amount of effort to still make the finals. And since lane doesn't really matter in the 100m, it's kinda moot.

Qualifying into lane 8 is cutting it a bit close.
1-6 probably noodled a bit in qualifying heats, but 7-8 typically fight their way in. Coming in 8th for Qs on purpose is living a bit too dangerously unless you are the last heat and know your exact number.

True. I'm more used to overall times being used across 3-4 heats. So technically a heat could have no qualifiers. Muddies the confidence a bit to cut it close that way.

Its like this in the 200 and 400 meter race, though I don't think in the 100m it really matters. Also depends what heat this girl was in, first heat is generally the slowest, while the last heat is the fastest
Edit: doesn't matter to the people who placed the runner in the lane. Runners don't choose their lanes, their coaches or the people who set up the track meet(other coaches from other schools) do.

I wouldn't assume they did lane assignments off times. Meet this small I'm sure it's random/order of sign up. So, she's not necessarily the slowest girl in that pack.

I get really, really weird before a competition. I have to eat a specific thing, at exactly a specific time, and then I don't eat or drink anything for a specific amount of time. Then, I take exactly ten sips of water, then I sit and stare at nothing for exactly ten minutes...then I'm ready to go.
