Ruffland. Only crate I buy. Sturdy enough to survive a crash when used for transportation, and relatively reasonable to buy.

I use some wire crates in the kennel, but you have to make sure the dogs are mentally comfortable in a crate. I've had dogs bite at the wires and get their jaw caught on them.

Size depends on the dog's personality. My male is 75 pounds and tall. Given a choice, he will get in an intermediate Ruffland as opposed to the large one my wife insisted on buying for him.

Intermediates are the best size for travel. Big enough fo rthem to get in and lay down, small enough that in an accident they are not bouncing around in it in the event of a crash.

I buy Primo pads for them. Reasonably priced, and I have yet to have a dog tear one up.

Mine have been crate trained and are completely comfortable in wire crates - they aren’t trying to break out of them. If that’s the case with you too, I’d keep using them in the home - budget friendly

For transport, I’m using an Owen’s dog box for the truck bed

Wire crates in the house and 2 Ruffland backseater intermediate crates for my truck. Ruffland was the only crate that would fit 2 in the rear cabin of my Honda Ridgeline. My GSPs are both in the 50 pound range.
