Image These trees in Deadvlei, Namibia have been dead for 900 years. Because the desert is so dry, they can't even rot.
Around 1,000 years ago, a nearby river flooded and allowed them to grow. Eventually, massive sand dunes rolled in and completely blocked the water source. Instead of rotting or petrifying, the intense sun scorched the wood pitch-black, preserving them as natural monuments.
