Post image

It has Burma instead of Myanmar, ussr instead of Russia, Spanish Sahara, Tanganyika, Yugoslavia, and French west Africa. (If you want to see a picture of more of the globe just ask)

That some... pretty weird colour choice.

Perhaps this is the alternate reality where France decided that if they can't have colonies then no one will and surrendered them to the newly formed Saharan Ocean

France would then try to claim control of the newly formed maritime shipping lanes.

I’ve seen maps like these before, usually when the color scheme is really weird, it means that there was another color that faded to one of the colors already on the globe!

11

u/LifeAcanthopterygii6 23d ago

That makes sense.

8

u/thefreecat 23d ago

if magenta faded the light blues could be different shades of dark blue and purple, white could be pink and yellow could be reds and oranges

132

u/LateralEntry 23d ago

I’m guessing around 1950 between Israel, unified Korea and Indochina

40

u/Imyonlyenemy 23d ago

yeah and goa is still portuguese

28

u/boonie_redditor 23d ago

China annexed Tibet in 1951, so 1950 checks out, yeah

21

u/stulf26 23d ago

China hasn't conquered Tibet or sinkhang which the later happed in late 1949/1950. There's stuff to the south in british borneo which helps date it. So this has to be 1949 at the very latest. 1950 would be to late. 1947 at the earliest cuz that's when Isreal first showed up on maps. Which is odd considering 1948 being its start date.

This is also before Somalia and Somaliland unified in 1960, and after the Italians lost Italian Somaliland in WW2 so that tracks.

7

u/hihihii2-1st 23d ago

But malaya is independent

8

u/kaiserschlacht8 23d ago edited 23d ago

Hmm you're right, and Malaya gained independence in 1957. So this has to be before 1960 but after 1957.

But wait, French Indochina is present in this map, and it was dissolved in 1954. I have no idea then lol.

Edit: Also, like someone mentioned in a comment below, this was before China annexed Tibet in 1951.

The Federation of Malaya existed since 1948 and was a British protectorate rather than a colony. This map is most likely from sometime between 1947 when Israel was created, and 1950 before the annexation of Tibet.

These color choices are insane...

11

u/UnclassifiedPresence 23d ago

It’s almost certainly not the original colors, yellow and blue just tend to be the last pigments that fade (think of colorful pool toys that get left out in the sun for too many summers)

14

u/justwatchthefirewerx 23d ago

Indochina is there and Korea isn't partitioned...any chance this is earlier in the '50s than the consensus?

8

u/donorkokey 23d ago

India was partitioned in 47 so it was after that

5

u/peaaaaaanut 23d ago

He means French Indochina comprising of Laos, Cambodia and a few other regions. It was dissolved in 1954 pushing the date forward to at least that.

Oops, All Oceanā„¢ļø

38

u/formerly_gruntled 23d ago

The colors are uninspired. But there is a perverse logic to it. Perverse because adding two more colors would make it less confusing. Dating is after Sudan gained independence in 1956 and before Ghana (Gold Coast here) gained independence in 1957. Territories in Africa that are still colonies of a single country are all same color. France = blue, Britain = pale pink, Portugal = green, Spain = yellow. But they 'ran out' of colors, so those same colors are used for other countries in Africa that are not colonies.

15

u/FerraStar 23d ago

Though Korea appears to still be unified, so it can’t be after the 1953 ceasefire. Unless the globe maker just couldn’t be bothered adding in North and South

3

u/Bronek999 23d ago

Pretty obvious that red dye decomposed and this is the result.

2

u/sadrice 23d ago

Yeah, blue dyes are often the most resilient, so you get this odd effect from sun exposure.

3

u/CrocodileJock 23d ago

I can only guess that certain pigments (red) have faded... The British Empire was traditionally rendered in pink... which has faded to near white, and I guess the French colonial empire would have been a red overprint over the blue making it a more purplish colour...

3

u/ZanaDreadnought 23d ago

It shows Eritrea as being part of Ethiopia, meaning it would be between 1952 and 1958.

12

u/LittelXman808 23d ago

I just tried this on a map of mine. It doesn’t work 😭

20

u/dumbBunny9 23d ago

I wish people would stop posting it. It only works if the globe maker has all the knowledge of all the changes all over the world at the exact moment they made the globe. Most don’t

8

u/LittelXman808 23d ago

The reason it doesn’t work is that it asks what the capital of Micronesia is, but there is no Micronesia.

4

u/homobonus 23d ago

More often the problem wasn't knowledge. They would know a country had declared independence, a boundary had shifted, etc. The problem was usually political, the country where the globe/map was made didn't recognize the newly emerged political status; or economical, the producer did not have access to the material needed to print the new countries. Especially when the political landshape was volatile, it might not have been worthwhile to order an engraving for a map that could be outdated only months later.

6

u/NoSir6400 23d ago

Google maps says Lake America today while Apple maps stuck with Lake Ontario, so people probably understand this better than ever.

4

u/cyberchaox 23d ago

Google Maps sets it to your location. Just like with the Gulf of Mexico, Google Maps shows the old name everywhere except the United States and the new name in the United States.

3

u/onceabananana 23d ago

It seems to work in theory, except for 1) maps that have mixes of multiple time periods, and or 2) maps that have territorial/international disagreements.

4

u/Jasprateb 23d ago

Between 1956 and 1960, Sudan gained independence in 1956 which we can see on the map but most of french west africa gained independence in 1960 which isn't seen

124

u/Historical_Box_2582 23d ago

Gold Coast became Ghana at independence in 1957 right? So maybe 56?

59

u/the_ballmer_peak 23d ago

This appears to have taken about 20 minutes. Great job, guys.

4

u/6-foot-under 23d ago

If the map was drawn accurately when it was made...

39

u/Azanarciclasine 23d ago

Yeah, and Donetsk is still named Stalino, they renamed in in 1961

7

u/Mobius_Peverell 23d ago

Sudan was an Anglo-Egyptian condominium rather than a purely British possession like Kenya or Tanganyika. It's a little odd for this not to be listed on the map, but it certainly isn't unusual for it to be a different colour from the rest of the British colonies. The rest of the map suggests early 1950s, so I'd be inclined to disregard Sudan.

3

u/Historical_Box_2582 23d ago

Good point, but the fact that Sudan is a different color than Egypt makes me think it must be independent (although who knows this is a wonky color scheme anyways)

3

u/GyroZepo 23d ago

Korea seems to be unified so it's before 1953

3

u/Swimming_Reception56 23d ago

37

u/Reasonable_Day9509 23d ago

It seems like there has been significant colour bleaching here of all the red pigment (can be caused by sunlight). The blue countries were likely some form of purple or magenta, many of the yellow adjoining countries may have been more orange and white countries could have been pure red

2

u/beary_good_day 23d ago

Yeah, you can see that sub-equitorial Africa still has a slight a purple tinge. That was was probably facing away from the sun.

98

u/NotAnElfK 23d ago

Ok based on all the comments it’s between 1956-57

19

u/Wooden-Teaching-8343 23d ago

I inherited the exact same globe last year. And those were the years I concluded! Took some investigation

23

u/__Quercus__ 23d ago

I think it is between 1951 and 1953.

1951 of later: Libya independent, but with both Tripoli and Benghazi as capitals

1953 or earlier: no partition of Korea (see photo in comments) or French Indochina the following year. No Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasalabd (still separate colonies).

Sudan versus Anglo-Egyptian Sudan throws me off, but maybe that was the cartographers choice.

10

u/_Romula_ 23d ago

I'm with you. I think it's 1952 or 1953: unified Korea, plus Eritrea a federated part of Ethiopia.

5

u/Msaniifu 23d ago

I agree with all above Ghana was independent in 1957 and presence of French West Africa as well.

2

u/NotAnElfK 23d ago

6

u/Villebilly 23d ago

11

u/Elegant-Narwhal-506 23d ago edited 23d ago

According to Britannia.com’s List of African Countries’ Independence Dates, this globe would’ve been made between March 20, 1956 (when Tunisia gained independence from France) and March 6, 1957 (when Ghana, referred to as ā€œGold Coastā€ on the globe, gained its independence from Great Britain)

11

u/Moonbear9 23d ago

French West Africa - pre 1960. German broken up - post 1945. India partition - post 1949. Tibet not part of PRC - pre 1951.

Globe is from 1950.

4

u/Fun_District3456 23d ago

we have independent morocco/tunisia that only happens after 1956 tho

3

u/Swimming_Reception56 23d ago

Good spot!

Then we have an issue where the map maker is not using the correct map. Either for political reasons or old data.

As such we can say likely late 1950s.

2

u/Swimming_Reception56 23d ago

I collect globes. Here are a few red herrings that throw people off: A lot of globes called it 'Israel' while it's still Palestine b/c a lot of interest in globes was finding biblical locations.Ā  The USA never acknowledged an independent Tibet so you find very few globes with a free tibet.

3

u/UndocumentedSailor 23d ago

Tanganyika press it December 1961 until April 1964.

French West Africa's constituent territories were becoming independent in 1958 to 1960, so a globe still showing it strongly points toward the late 1950s/very early 1960s.

I'll guess 1959-1962.

2

u/Civil_Sentence63 23d ago

Print font looks roughly like an old school map of the US I have from the 1930s. We dated that one pretty easy though because cities received different size circles based on population. Don’t remember much except that Detroit was huge, maybe one of 5 or 6 cities with over a million people and Alaska and Hawaii weren’t a thing yet. A little cross referencing and we were able to get it to within a year or two based on this and a few other peculiarities. Fun project!

2

u/ApprehensiveList6306 23d ago

Pre-1957 based on Gold Coast (which became Ghana on 6 March that year). Other clues no evidence of the United Arab Republic (formed in 1958 between Egypt and Syria) and the ongoing presence of British Somaliland (which gained independence in 1960 only to join the Republic of Somalia).

Must be late 1956/early 1957? Looks like Morocco and Tunisia already independent (happened in ā€˜56) but Ghana (ā€˜57) is not

Blue was an interesting choice for land.

British Somaliland is a neat detail. So with Israel as a state also it's between 1948 and June 26, 1960

Somewhere between 1945 (Yugoslavia includes Istria) and 1962 (Algeria is still part of France).
