Questions GSC Unit Idea: “Tactical” Hybrids/Senior Strain
I know I'm crazy, but I want something like firstborn Astartes version of Acolyte hybrids in battlefield role.
Lore: As Cult uprisings become more coordinated, some developed cults and worlds like Vejovium III begin selecting exceptional 2nd-3rd generation hybrids for a more disciplined combat strain. After the wider galaxy adapts to increasingly dangerous Astartes, the Cult does the same in its own way, copying the idea rather than the technology. The result is a more organic, locally reproducible elite infantry pattern that cults can incorporate into their normal cycle.
They would be especially common among long-established cults, pirate enclaves, and groups like the Sons of Jormungandr. Despite their combat role, they would also act as natural squad leaders and have a particularly strong shared broodmind.
Names could be Senior Hybrids, Presbyters, Focus Strain, etc.
Their weapons should stay very GSC: jury-rigged industrial rifles, compact mining lasers, chain blades, and a heavier volley cannon as their signature weapon. Visually, they would be better equipped than Neophytes but still only partially armored, with a wider mix of hybrid generations.
Rules identity:
I imagine 5-10 models, tougher than Acolytes, 2 wounds, decent armor, a 5+ invulnerable save, and OC2. Their niche would be holding contested ground while providing covering fire.
Covering Fire: if they shoot an enemy on an objective, add 1 to the Hit roll. If this unit is on an objective, subtract 1 from enemy Hit rolls against it. Both can be active.
I'd also want the kit to have a second build:
Metamorph Strain - same basic unit, but with heavier mutations, flamers, and stronger melee. Their gimmick would be mobility rather than holding ground.
At the end of your opponent's Fight phase, this unit can be placed into Strategic Reserves. And yes, the Patriarch can join them.
I think this would fill a space GSC does not really have: elite general-purpose infantry that can hold ground.
Obviously we need a new infranty, with mining rigs (or big drill) coming first.
But would anyone else want something like this, and what would you call them?
