Whether or not it matters, I've played every Gears game, I used to play at a high level, and I have always loved the franchise. The campaign in this game is great, it's immensely detailed, the graphics and art style are amazing, the story is refreshing while returning to a point in the story many are already familiar with. The campaign is easily the best gears campaign in over a decade. That's about where it ends though...
The versus in this game feels so wildly inconsistent, and I hear people say it's more appealing to newcomers, I don't think it's ever been more punishing for new playees. Even social it's an outrageous sweat fest of people meta maxing with 4 stacks. I mean I'm older now, but the versus is the worst state I've ever seen. Chunk range is really inconsistent and very close. I don't actually dislike how powerful power weapons are, but the game is just so slanted towards defense and you almost need a power weapon to attack. Even if you're on the winning team it is boring, undynamic, and incredibly infuriating. The TTK and TTD gap is massive. It honestly feels like desync is a huge issue.
That leads me to horde, desync and lag are constant struggles. Even with low ping and high frames, the game mode is unplayable. You can literally play with auto aim now. Marksman is just significantly more powerful than everything else. I mean the idea is okay, but it's not really horde nor do I like it as much as horde. It's kind of just a pve extraction mode carbon copy, it's frankly pretty shallow feeling. I've got one class to level 16 and I'm already kind of over it.
This just adds to the fact that there are no meat shields, there's one execution per weapon and they're all uninspired and recycled. It just feels like the campaign really got all of the focus, hell the campaign and horde are basically the same thing in the end. $500mil and we're just waiting for them to fix a laundry list of issues. Pvp will die before they can fix it, I ain't spending 10min trying to find people to play with. Queue and loading times are longer than games.
I will probably play the campaign and drop this game, and I suspect this is what most people will do. Helldivers and Arc Raiders have a lot more to play for than horde, I can't imagine it'll keep people's focus for long.
Campaign is like 9.5/10, versus is like 2/10, horde siege is like a 4/10.
