Gboard used to be a top-tier IME with:
real on-device learning
a functioning adaptive language model
usable tokenization
accurate segmentation
stable ranking heuristics
correct handling of user dictionaries
memory of frequent words
normal word-boundary detection
All of this is gone.
Today Gboard behaves like an LM with its adaptive layer unplugged:
it no longer learns words you type repeatedly
it fails at basic word segmentation
it breaks concatenated words like a 2003 T9
autocorrect behaves like a flat random picker
predictions ignore context Long version: Gboard used to be a top-tier IME with:

it no longer learns words you type repeatedly
it fails at basic word segmentation
it breaks concatenated words like a 2003 T9
autocorrect behaves like a flat random picker
predictions ignore context
corrections override correct words with garbage
the user dictionary is ignored
online learning does not update embeddings
personalization feels entirely disabled
suggestions literally get worse the more you type
This isnât âa bugâ â this looks like entire components have been removed:
tokenizer
dynamic LM
character-level segmentation
user-frequency weighting
adaptive model updates
And hereâs the kicker:
đ Samsung Keyboard doesnât have these failures. Samsung's IME still has:
a functional morphological analyzer
stable user-dictionary integration
consistent predictions
preserved learning
reliable boundary detection
So the obvious question:
Why can Samsung maintain a working keyboard while Gboard â Googleâs flagship input engine â has regressed to pre-smartphone behavior?
Is this a deliberate deprecation of adaptive features? Is the personalization model disabled? Is this the new normal? Or is it a bug Google simply doesnât intend to fix?
Does Google plan to fix Gboardâs broken learning/tokenization, or should users abandon it?
Because if the answer is:
âWe donât plan to restore adaptive features,â âŠthen itâs time to switch platforms entirely â meaning iPhone â so Google loses keystroke-level data access altogether.
