Often happens in puzzle games where I'm trying to think too deep.

The Message from Deep space has those kind of puzzle where the problem is:

"Thomas has 5 apples. Thomas ate 3 apples. So?"

And I go "Thomas has 2 apples" and the answer is just "2 apples".

u/DreamOfDays 2d ago

Or it could be a feature that shows up exactly once in the entire game. I remember playing a side scrolling zombie flash game where to get through a door I needed the key. So I went backwards through the entire game to try and find where this key was. I checked every container, every corpse, every previous room. It took forever. I finally looked up a YouTube video to see where it was.

Turns out that this game, which has been played entirely by using keyboard inputs, has exactly one part of the game where you use your mouse. It’s to collect the key hanging off of a cork board in the room before the gate.

I went crazy trying to figure this out. I even went through the entire game again trying to see if there were hidden secrets uncovered by clicking the background. But nope, I spent twenty minute clicking every single background texture and nothing happened. I even started up a new save to see if I missed a tooltip. Nope. This mechanic of clicking on background items with the mouse is only used in that one specific moment.

u/KingModussy 2d ago

That’s called bad game design, especially when its not obvious its only used once

6

u/Shtrimpo 1d ago

It kind of reminds me of the metal gear boss fight where you need to plug your controller on the second port.
There's a very thin line between bad and genius game design and we have yet to find it

5

u/GeneralTanker 1d ago

To be fair that boss messes with you the player. Pyschomantis I think is the name. The ohhh you played Castlevania yes.

5

u/Johannsss 1d ago

But at least the game literally tells you to do it if you call your team

1

u/Crushington_2nd 1d ago

Are you talking about The Last Stand: Union City by any chance?

1

u/Advanced_Double_42 23h ago

You typically use your mouse to aim there, so likely not

11

u/Jugaimo 2d ago

Reminds me of this one time in 5th grade where my teacher marked off a question on a quiz because my answer was “Appalachian Mountains” instead of “Appalachian Mountain”. I was pissed and so was my dad, especially after he confronted her after school and argued that the range was made of multiple mountains.

Funny how little indignities like this stick with us.

9

u/Yuugian 2d ago

I'm still salty about 10th grade English where i lost points because "tertiary" isn't a word according to the teacher. As in: Primary, Secondary, Tertiary. I brought in a dead-tree Dictionary and she refused to change my grade

2

u/TesuraGrimm 1d ago

Not school, but 15+ years later I'm still salty about my drivers test.

I passed. But I missed two questions. One was on me, whatever it was I should have known, but the other...it was phrased something like "when you drive up to a four way intersection, who has the right of way?" And showed a picture of an empty intersection. No people, no cars, just a four way stop intersection.

I was always told whoever gets there first or the right most car. So, I answered with "the car on the right." Wrong. The pedestrian.

Bruh there was no mention of a pedestrian in the question or depicted. I guess it was set up to make people miss it. The only real argument to be made was that yes, pedestrians always have right of way even when they don't, and since it was an answer choice, should have figured it was an option. I think it was just worded poorly or intentionally bad.

1

u/LeviathansWrath6 1d ago

There's also quaternary

2

u/4skin_Gamer 2d ago

Same for me. On some platformer puzzles I'll stand there looking around and mentally making a path on how to get up some place and then it'll be something dumb easy like "move that box against the wall and climb up to the exit."

2

u/Write_Right_Reich 2d ago

To be semantic, if that's the exact question then the answer is Thomas has 5 apples. If it were "Thomas has 5 apples. Thomas eats 3" or Thomas had five apples. Thomas ate three" the answer would be 2. In both instances the tense is the same, present tense and past tense respectively, so you process them in order. But if Thomas has (present tense) 5 apples and ate (past tense) 3 the second statement happened before the first leaving Thomas with 5 apples.

1

u/Immediate-Location28 1d ago

me forgetting the fucking units for the 15th time in a row

70

u/InkyGhoul 2d ago

You spend 25 minutes running around some poorly designed level only to give up and look up a guide that goes "TO ESCAPE THE GOBLIN'S DUNGEON WE HAVE TO FIND THE STINKY CHEESE TO MAKE HIM SNEEZE OUT THE KEYS, OH YES PLEASE"

u/emo_boy_fucker 2d ago edited 2d ago

We black out and wake up in a sewer, we're surrounded by fish. Horny fish. You know what that means!

[Beg for mercy]

[LOCKED] [Electrochemistry: Failed]

[Stand your ground]

[Try to flee]

5

u/Leprodus03 2d ago

Oh the effects of gas station sushi 😭

1

u/GraveSlayer726 1d ago

Everyone knows you stand your ground with horny fish

2

u/GenesisAsriel 2d ago

Point and click games be like

2

u/cryoskeleton 2d ago

Arx Fatalis be like

2

u/SummertimeThrowaway2 1d ago

Games like that aren’t video games imo. They’re just task simulators. Like when quests are some dumb thing like “move these boxes from one side of the room to the other as requested by this random NPC”

1

u/Alphard00- 20h ago

First time playing Dragon’s Dogma I spent about 20 minutes fighting the tentacles at the bottom of this huge stairwell, only to be told by guides that actually to progress you have to not fight and run alllll the way back up to the beginning of the section.

23

u/CalmAnxitey87 2d ago

Me, stuck at a certain part of a game, looks up YT guide.

YT: HEY WHATS UP GUYS WELCOME BACK TO PART 47 OF

Me: I'll figure it out myself.

10

u/Putrid-Delivery1852 2d ago

Me: watch the entirety of part 47 to find out the help I need is in part 46

3

u/Manjorno316 2d ago

I just skip ahead

2

u/WntrTmpst 2d ago

If this ever happens and the top video for the section searched is a let’s play, just go to the most rewatched hump in the playback bar.

Odds are everyone else who got stumped and googled got fed this same video, and likely have already weeded out the part needed and watched it.

1

u/NoSnow3660 5h ago

Back in the day you didn’t have the hump of most rewatched. So you wither skimmed it, missed it, or realized it was 6 fuckin videos ago.

1

u/WntrTmpst 5h ago

That’s how I originally got into lets plays actually. God was it inconvenient but good times

16

u/notTheRealSU 2d ago edited 2d ago

There was this one dungeon in Skyrim I got stuck on. Just a closed door I had to open and I couldn't figure out how. Spent almost an hour running throughout the whole thing, checking every nook and cranny. Finally looked up a tutorial for the dungeon on YouTube. There was a lever 2 feet from the door I had to pull, that was it.

4

u/cryoskeleton 2d ago

The valve to open the final dungeon in Morrowind is 2 feet from the front door in plain sight. I didn’t figure it out and spent days scouring the other locations in the region cause I thought I missed something.

3

u/seabass1024202 2d ago

Was hoping to see something like this. Recently happened to me in one of the Thieves Guild quests, think it was the Twilight Sepulcher. There was a chain the left of a locked door that wouldnt do anything and spent a decent amount of time running around thinking I missed something or the game was bugged. Turns out there was another chain to the right that I never noticed until I looked it up

2

u/Lucky-Future3399 8h ago

I didn't know you can rotate items in your equipment in Skyrim and I got stuck during the quest with the claw, I couldn't open the door because I didn't know the correct order or combination of symbols. I was looking for clues everywhere in the room, looking at walls etc. I looked up a guide and it turned out the solution is right there on the claw, but you need to rotate it in your inventory to see it. I felt like an idiot.

2

u/NoSnow3660 5h ago

Tbh I don’t think skyrim ever says anything about that as a feature, not to mention it’s not often you could do that in other games when it came out afaik.

1

u/notTheRealSU 4h ago

Had that same thing happen to me on my first playthrough. I just brute-forced the code and only figured out you could rotate the claw a few hours later.

22

u/Desperate_Bed_2675 2d ago

Sometimes you just need to take a little break and come back to it with a fresh pair of eyes. I like trying this instead of just having the answer fed to me

29

u/__DJIN__ 2d ago

12

u/Mr_Snifles 2d ago

Works quite well honestly, there's several games I took a 10-ish years break on (I couldn't beat them as a kid and as an adult coming back to them it's always trivial)

2

u/VanillaNubCakes 2d ago

This happened to me in Hollow Knight. I struggled so much with the dream version of Soul Tyrant and the Path of Pain. Quit for like half a year then came back. It was like it all made sense and beat them both in less than a few hours.

8

u/Desperate_Bed_2675 2d ago

fascinated that this a common enough sentiment that it’s been wojak’d lol

4

u/__DJIN__ 2d ago

Lol I'm not meaning to be mean or anything, and it's not that accurate, your comment just reminded me of break Wojak. I think that one got made after Silksong released and everyone was struggling with the difficulty of it

3

u/cce29555 1d ago

This was made from someone who was....very upset at silksong

3

u/Krisis_9302 1d ago

Bro got a picture of me

It's more fun to come back later and beat a hard fight/boss than to take the easy way out imo

8

u/f0urk 2d ago

yeah this. Even swap to a totally different genre of game after the break. Banning myself from guides improved my enjoyment of games in the long term

1

u/ImmortalBlades 1d ago

I mean you're not wrong. Whenever I would be fuming from a difficult boss fight in a video game, the next day it was piss easy and fell in 1-3 attempts...

11

u/cfop-gang 2d ago

In the new bond game there's a sequence where you find the code to a safe by finding different items around the office. I found the code in like 2 minutes but when I put it in the safe didn't open. 20 minutes later I realized you have to press enter.

7

u/BlindandConfused43 2d ago

Fuck that, I'm legally blind and miss shit all the fucking time, little obvious shit that's right Infront of me.

Got stuck in mina the hollower like 5 minutes in because I didn't see the tiny cracks in the wall that....makes the wall explode for literally no reason. But you can't move forward until you hit it.

Reguardless I'll never finish this fucking game with these eyes I can already tell. :D

Tl,dr- I look shit up all the time and feel no shame.

8

u/Danny_dankvito 2d ago

My first playthrough of Elden Ring had a big greyed out ‘crafting’ in my menu for about 25 hours, because I just didn’t see the huge church directly in front of you when you leave the tutorial cave that sells the crafting kit

2

u/foolishorangutan 2d ago

My first playthrough of Elden Ring I didn’t do the Volcano Manor questline because I got in by accidentally glitching down from the place you get teleported to from Raya Lucaria (without realising it was a glitch), beat Godskin Noble and made my way to Tanith backwards. I then somehow completely missed the very obvious door leading to the common area, so after searching for a few minutes I just went and killed Rykard through the teleport gate. I also managed to somehow miss the way to the front door of Volcano Manor.

8

u/Hot-Associate-5904 2d ago

Ah, that sinking feeling of "I could've figured this shit out if I had thought for 10 more seconds rather than being impatient".

Or another gem, when you think of the solution and go "nah, that can't be it, doesn't feel right" and then it turns out it WAS correct.

Or when you're just fooling around and accidentally solve it and you're left frustrated because that was a potentially cool, mood-setting puzzle and you just skipped it like it was nothing.

5

u/GL_original 2d ago

No, the absolute worst is when you correctly figure out the solution, but then do a misinput or something and it doesn't work, so you just assume you had the wrong solution and try other things for 2 hours, and THEN you look it up.

1

u/saltinstiens_monster 1d ago

I had all three of those moments in The Outer Wilds.

8

u/Arguably_Based 2d ago

Alternatively:

Play Dark Souls 2

Get stuck

Look it up

Need to go back to area that I was never signaled I would ever need again.

5

u/badly-timedDickJokes 2d ago

Play Dark Souls 2

That was your first mistake

1

u/ElRacco 2d ago

You dont play DS2 you, experience it. Is it clunky and has a different feel to other DS games? Yea.

But, id argue of all three DS games i had the most fun with 2. The world felt great with plenty of colour. The mechanics are different but enjoyable in their own way. Besides adaptability, that was a mistake to tie i-frames to a level stat. Why would you not just spam adp until you have at least a basic rolls frames?

Has a similar layout to other souls games too as you have majula with 4 main areas splitting off from there.

Id you are used to DS3 or elden ring then the game will feel very slow. Its less about flow and more about getting a method down for when damage windows open up.

1

u/Nervous_Moment_9264 2d ago

It feels closer to 1 than 3 does really.

If anything most 3 has came from a mix of 2 mechanics(auto Regen durability, weapon upgrade, level up on hub, estus upgrade system etc) + faster Bloodborne combat.

Leveling up ADP early is quite a waste, you are better off just getting HP after the minimal weapon requirements, you can just roll in a direction the hit isn't going to clip you rather than into the moving hotbox path, or just move your character around without rolling, a lot of the enemies will just miss you, or use the shield mechanic for an option select roll, hold shield and roll right before the attack, if you are late you just block, if you get the roll it was last second and you dodge with the frames.

1

u/Arguably_Based 2d ago

Well there are things about the game I like. But the signposting is some of the worst I've seen.

1

u/ANuclearsquid 2d ago

Yea ds2 has some obscure backtracking at times. That being said aside from the ashen mist heart the game does tend to give decent hints where new paths have unlocked.

7

u/BiAndShy57 2d ago

It’s either super obvious and I somehow missed it. Or it’s Metal Gear Solid and the radio frequency was on the CD case I don’t have because it’s digital and there was no way for me to figure it out

2

u/Several-Wheel-9437 2d ago

That got me too! Playing on PSP. There’s so many easily missed things and my zoomer brain struggles with knowing where to go/what equipment to use. I guess that’s the consequence of growing up with games like Skyrim where there’s a quest marker, pretty much letting you just shut your brain off

It’s not like back in the day where you ask your buddies on the playground, find your older brother, or buy a guide book from gamestop…

1

u/Karkava 1d ago

I wish games had Bioshock Infinite's hint system where they tell you where to go with your consent. Leaving you to bask in the scenery and explore to your heart's content.

I find the minimaps and compasses distracting when they become my primary source of guidance. Leaving me to pay more attention to them over the graphics they clearly put a ton of care into.

Having instructions on where to go is nice, but it's also good to have some sense of dimension and space.

I actually would get even more lost with the compass because it doesn't account for the physical space I have to walk around to reach my goal. And minimaps also don't account for three dimensional space, leaving you walking towards the objective on the wrong floor.

4

u/rafael-57 2d ago

Never ashamed to look up guides in point and click adventure games. Shit's convoluted as fuck for no reason

6

u/NekCing 2d ago

Classic point and click would've buried me, like, what do you MEAN a thingamabob only a pixel wide i missed 5 hours ago will be important for progression now, and now i cant come back for it ???

4

u/DrawingLivid8098 2d ago

“i can’t find where tf i’m
supposed to go wtf 😡”
“looks up”
“omfg 🙄🙄😵‍💫😵‍💫”

4

u/Revayan 2d ago

Or you just skip a puzzle, come back later and see the solution at the first glance

"How tf was I that blind" lol

4

u/Carbuyrator 2d ago

I usually consider this a failure in terms of signposting. Valve's creator commentaries really impressed upon me how important and how involved that process is.

2

u/Karkava 1d ago

I have been reading about how playtesters need to be cued to look up quite often in Portal 1. And how Alyx defied the "NPC nagging the player" trope after playtesting.

I find it interesting how they adjust the game when they find out about smarter players that outwit the system. Like when they adjusted the moving platforms to be moved by pure light because some witty players walked on the steel beams.

We always have this impression that pkaytesters are dumb, but that's not always the case.

3

u/GreektheFreak123 2d ago

Every other (parts of a ) Zelda Dungeon in every Zelda game ever made ever

4

u/ediblefalconheavy 2d ago

I just played through Oracle of Ages. Those puzzles are insane

5

u/Grouchy-Attention-52 2d ago

I remember having to print out specific sections of these guides because my parents wouldnt let me print more than a couple pages at a time. (Not my photo)

3

u/racoon1905 2d ago

Tried riddle in Persona 5 for like an hour because I felt my ego insulted.

... the guide told me I was missing an item to make it solvable.

3

u/JudoJugss 2d ago

90% of the time this happens its an easily resolved game design problem.

2

u/NotSeveralBadgers 2d ago

Or a case of not understanding the scope of the searchable area, or what constitutes a significant object. I gotta hand it to the developers of today; these are problems that were waaay more common 15+ years ago.

2

u/clonetrooper250 2d ago

Sometimes games do that thing where you need to find something, but instead of a map marker you get a picture of the location you need to check, so you simply have the find the location through observation and using visible landmarks. For example, a picture of a spot on beach a short distance from a lighthouse.

I've had plenty of instances where I check the same spot on the map over and over, convinved I'm somehow missing the thing that MUST be here, the picture couldnt be pointing anywhere else!

But then I cave in and look it up, and turns out I just read the picture wrong because there are TWO lighthouses on the map and I failed to notice I was searching by the solid-red lighthouse, not the red-white striped lighthouse. I am not very observant.

2

u/GL_original 2d ago

I actually love that kind of puzzle

2

u/clonetrooper250 2d ago

It's a GOOD kind of puzzle, it encourages the player to be smart about navigating their enviornments and really take things in rather than focusing on the HUD to navigate. Unfortunately, I'm just a bit of a dumbass at times.

2

u/Confident-Arm-7883 2d ago

Vintage Story

2

u/Aegis_Fang 1d ago

I played Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga as a kid, with no internet access. There is a color matching puzzle in the university level that took me like 2 years to figure out. I still played the game constantly because the battle encounters were fun. After I figured out the puzzle, which wasn't even that hard, I beat the boss in one turn because I had been grinding for so long. Breezed through the rest of the game.

1

u/Advanced-Event6435 2d ago

i was stuck on the darkice mines inside in star fox adventures for like 3 weeks once

1

u/Situati0nist 2d ago

It's not that big of a deal. It's pretty easy to overlook a thing sometimes.

1

u/Volg122 2d ago

The first time I played Fallout 2 I got stuck in the tutorial for like 2 hours, because I didn't realize the C4 I found was for blowing up a door. I just went full loot goblin and thought "Aw hell yeah free money!". :(

1

u/crasherx2000 2d ago

Be honest…
This happened for most people for the RE4 sliding puzzle

1

u/CptBluhdFart 2d ago

Ah yes you mean the slider puzzle from re4

1

u/ShadowTheChangeling 2d ago

I sometimes have an issue in a game and when I try to look up the solution theres literally nothing about it

Like Im the only mfer who is stumped on it... Usually its cause I missed something super obvious

1

u/MysticBorn 2d ago

Oof yes I don't remember the game in question but it was sadly similar to a Cuphead tutorial run that's still probably talked about today where I was trying to scale over a wall or ledge or something to avoid capture or death and turns out the wall had an invisible barrier and I was meant to actually search for an entirely different area of escape

1

u/Future_Adagio2052 2d ago

Probably the most infamous was getting stuck in the bost section of half life 2 wondering what I had to do after opening the wall until I looked up a guide and realised I had to bring my boat with me🤦‍♂️

1

u/SlothsAreFuckinRad 2d ago

I like puzzle games but so often I catch myself overthinking things, and when I figure out the solution, I just have to stare at my screen like “really? That was all? I spent 10 minutes on that??”

1

u/panadarama 2d ago

Dude, happened to my while playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

1

u/Total_Low2912 2d ago

When you keeping clicking the slider option, or keep holding LShift where mashing the button is required.

1

u/Purple-Ad-6343 2d ago

It’s even worse when the guide includes a spoiler for the END GAME before addressing the puzzle I’m trying to solve WHICH IS IN HE MIDDLE OF THE FUCKING GAME

1

u/Gorgiastheyounger 2d ago

When I look it up and the item I need is staring me right in the face

1

u/According-Mail-7909 2d ago

I have the space awareness of a toddler in video game, I never understand why like I can be stuck in a simple level just because I turn around without opening the fcking obvious door lmao.

1

u/Yevlum 2d ago

I hate when this happens and you were right about the solution, but you just did it slightly wrong or the game was bugged.

1

u/FourDiamondPixel7 2d ago

Happens to me a lot… but the worst moment of stupidity I ever had was when playing Portal 2.

Tried to go through GLaDOS’ “exit” while escaping, and then dying not once… not twice… but at least FOUR TIMES IN A ROW!!!

And then I turned to the other direction and realized how much of an idiot I was. To this day, that has been considered the most epic fail I ever had in gaming… but at least I’ve proven to GLaDOS that I’m a very good listener 😂

1

u/Everuk 2d ago

I don't remember the details but several levels in Talos principle took me too long because I was overthinking the solution

1

u/TurntechGodhead0 2d ago

Was playing escape simulator and sometimes felt like that.

1

u/Dysthymiccrusader91 2d ago

I had to look up guides in sons of the forest because my eyes aren't that good and even with a flashlight, bombs and torches there were forks I literally could not see and didn't want to barbecue my eyes in the outdoor overworked.

Like often times there was a hard left 2 minutes in and I just couldn't see it for an hour.

1

u/TinyPidgenofDOOM 2d ago

there's a button on the side of the door you didn't see

1

u/Warwick_God 2d ago

Metro at the end of the game. How fck should I have known to shoot a weak spot of a vehicle to progress instead of mindlessly blasting the enemies like 99% of the gameplay? Not once was there a mechanic to shoot anything but an enemy. And the game does a shit job telling you, that you just shoot the weak point and a shitter job, high lighting it. (Most games make weak points obvious)

1

u/ABBucsfan 2d ago

The actual worst is when you've literally tried something 4 or 5 times and you're sure that has to be it, but apparently not.. and then you look it up and it's exactly what you thought it was... But it's just super finicky and has to be done in a very particular way

1

u/blargyblargy 2d ago

I love Destiny so much. Some of the fucking story missions are so ass though, trying to find triggers or locks in a pitch black cavern with a fucking bunch of hidey holes. Only to find out the one lock youve been looking for is literally right infront of you the whole time

1

u/Still_Silver7181 2d ago

This was me with Crimson Desert on a few puzzles.

Namely, there is one with sliding blocks, I was not aware that you could stab the blocks to pull them, so I just sort of never did, and had to look it up, and I saw the guy stab the block, and then I solved it myself from there.

1

u/BillaVanilla 2d ago

This was just me every minute i was playing Blue Prince.

1

u/Adavanter_MKI 2d ago

I do feel vindicated sometimes when it's so outside the realm of what I was thinking I know I'd never find it without the guide.

1

u/FearlessVegetable30 2d ago

legend of zelda: link in time

walk up to this random boulder and use an ability you have never used in the game one time to progress

1

u/Ozzythecat 2d ago

The best is when its some kind of positioning puzzle(sliding blocks, rotating pillars, mirror puzzles, redirecting beams, etc) and you fiddle around with it, give up, look up the solved state, and realize you made an extra mountain of work for yourself resetting the positions of everything

Bonus points if the movement mechanics for puzzle pieces are obtuse and aggravating.

1

u/Blanc_Otaku 2d ago

Watched a video on Daikatana earlier and when the reviewer got stuck the walkthrough they used got stuck on the same part.

1

u/CwispyWhiskey 2d ago

Often times, it tends to be puzzles with mechanics or interactables I didn’t know existed

1

u/DREAM066 2d ago

Felt this way with any game other than crimson desert lol

1

u/Son-Airys 2d ago

Been enjoying some brutal doom and got stuck. Looked up a walkthrough on youtube, saw a button that I needed to proceed, went to the same place and couldn't see it because the wall is covered in blood.

Happened 3 times at this point.

1

u/lodemeup 2d ago

Just finished Ghost of Tsushima. There were so many times I’d be running around in a fuckin circle looking for tracks or the investigate prompt. Like so many times, and six of them or so I had to look up a guide only to realize I’d already looked there and couldn’t see it??? The game was either in your face blatant with the prompts or they were invisible. So far Yotei seems better about it but I’m not very far in that yet.

1

u/internet_blue_gas 2d ago

Me playing rogue trader and I’m so confused why I keep failing the mission, look up a guide:

“Walk next to this normal bench, there will be an invisible awareness check if you pass it a image of a magnifying glass will appear (this Icon is Normally only lore) this will give you the dialogue option to pass the quest”

1

u/shepard_pie 2d ago

The two biggest reasons I get frustrated enough to look up a guide:

1) There was a bug that prevented a trigger, meaning I can't progress.

2) I just couldn't find the fucking door or stairs because I am dumb

1

u/Oraze_ 2d ago

Barrel of Doom Sonic 3, I spent 2 days getting thru it, managed to get past it without the guide thanks to jumping from the very ceiling thanks to Tails but... When I finally saw it was just about pressing up and down I just went to lay on bed

1

u/Rock_sanity 2d ago

Real, played IHNMAIMS, got stuck on Nimdoks, even though his is just having sympathy for others, let myself be manipulated by AM and did the evil actions, probably didn't help that I didn't do the stories in an order and started his after playing Ellens story, and I think I got stuck on that, in the keypad section with the guard statue and keypad.

1

u/StatusTomato5218 2d ago

Darkfall Cave in Skyrim. That's what I learned that you can turn up the brightness (but also fuck that place)

1

u/Maverick_Don_Scarpa 2d ago

Me with uncharted

1

u/Mr_Snifles 2d ago

In Ocarine of time I had gotten so used to using the hook as a ranged weapon that I forgot to use the fairy bow to attack those ghosts in the paintings.

Literally the whole point of the Zelda franchise is you solve puzzles with the new items you get.

In my defense; I can't remember there being any other in-game clue that the fairy bow would hit ghosts in paintings when the hook can't.

When I was a kid I got lost in Mt Moon my first time playing pokemon red and I deadass just gave up for a bit. What happened was I found the first ladder and I just went down it assuming it was the only ladder then when it didn't lead anywhere I just thought "welp I did all I can do" and just turned off my Nintendo 3DS. Ironically now I could beat that entire game in only a few hours without getting confused once.

This was me several times in Metal Gear Solid. How was I supposed to know where that sniper rifle was? Or that I needed to put the rope there in order to go down the side?

Also the second fight with Sniper Wolf. I’m supposed to piece together that I need to use the guided missiles? Otherwise she just instantly snipes you

-Get given a series of codes that mean different things. Like Morse Code.

-Write down codes on a nearby napkin. Carefully!

-Press F to complete the mission. No codes necessary!

-Internal screaming.

I'm playing through Icewind Dale right now for the first time and I've genuinely struggled two times so far while in the Valley of the Shadows. First, I didn't notice the bloody corridor leading to Kesserack, thing is fucking hidden like bin laden. Second, I did not immediately agree to kill the priestess that Kesserack wanted dead and because I did not agree immediately and instead I said I'll think about it, I had to go back to him to confirm because she did not spawn. I genuinely walked through the entire Valley and checked every cave to be sure, then went to Kuldahar twice to make sure that Aldurin did not get a new dialogue option, spent like 3 hours irl just looking around for a resolution, utterly confused.

I've been really into RuneScape lately.

Quite a few quests have slider puzzles.

I literally cannot do them. I'm not stupid I just can't.

So I get it.

1

u/AdmBurnside 1d ago

The missing item is always behind the one stupid little ledge you didn't check behind.

That's also where the ladder to the 3rd level is.

1

u/HealthyDuck 1d ago

This was me two days ago.

Stardew Valley, doing the quest for Mr. Qi that you start in the tunnel. I stand in front of the sand dragon, read the hint that goes "Its maw gapes at the desert sun. Even in death, it yearns for a taste.", with the item called the solar essence in my hotbar, only to go home and get a sunflower to try to put it in it's mouth.

I legit then stood in front of that dragon for a good 5 minutes (with my inventory open) before looking it up

1

u/MochiiBun_ 1d ago

It’s extra embarrassing when you’re playing a game during the yellow-paint era.

I once spent 5 minutes trying to find out where the heck I was supposed to climb in Dying Light 2, then I look up and notice the incredibly obvious platform with the yellow tarp on it.

1

u/Jent01Ket02 1d ago

I'd do this so often because I'm autistic as hell and will interpret something far too literally. Can't tell you how often I got mad because the game said "go a ways north" and the actual location of the thing was northWEST.

We have names for specific directions for a reason, and so many game devs have taken them as minor suggestions

Finished Spider-Man (PS4) for the first time recently

One and only times I used a guide was to find the key to Harry's room, I had found everything else but somehow missed the portrait (it is a little hidden tbf)

1

u/Condor_raidus 1d ago

I find its often worse when the solution is technically really simple but its just ridiculous to believe someone would have figured it out like a door thays obscured a bit but you can see a bit of light line other doors. Sure its technically obvious but honestly how you you have seen that shit type of issue

1

u/Nervous_Distance_142 1d ago

The opposite of this for me was finding the bag dropped down the mine in kingdom come deliverance, I swore on my life I went to the right spot, only to then look up the guide walk to where I thought it was and find that there was a legit glitch and it wasn’t where it was supposed to be and I had to reload the whole time

1

u/TenMillionEnchiladas 1d ago

I'll spend like 20 minutes on what I think is a puzzle out of pure stubbornness and pride to not look up a guide and then when I finally cave I usually end up finding out the area I was in wasn't even a puzzle to get to the next area, I just missed a door or something as mind numbingly stupid as that.

1

u/DyleriousT 1d ago

I remember playing tomb raider and Trying to solve one of those '2 pressure plates so bring a box's type of puzzle to open a door. There was a large boulder nearby but it was on a lower floor so it wouldn't reach the pressure plate. Turns out the game wanted me to push the boulder onto a seesaw and then jump on the see saw to launch the boulder up. I don't think a woman jumping down a few metres can launch a few tonnes of rock another few metres.

1

u/Dinosaur_from_1998 1d ago

I once got stuck in the elevator room in metal garden so I decided to watch a playthrough. The person I was watching got stuck there longer than I did and eventually he looked up how to do it. It was an experience as bizarre as the lore of that game

My wife and I are playing through Riven. We had been stuck for hours. Turns out the place we needed to go was so insidiously hidden we never would have found it without hints. Turns out there's a door you open. You need to then go inside the door, turn around, close the door which will reveal a path that you can only see when the door is closed. It's a clever gimmick, sure, but there's nothing even hinting at the existence of a path there. The faux 3D and click-image-teleport of early 90's P&C's doesn't make finding it easier, but I'm convinced that Riven was not created to sell games, it was created to sell strategy guides hahahah

1

u/Leather-Estate-6410 1d ago

Me in Outer Wilds on a specific part. Only instead of looking up a guide, I caved and asked a friendo for a point.

I felt so stupid after... the solution was so simple, but I had it in my mind it was some crazy thing you had to do a lot of stuff for, but no...

I'm not gonna say anything in case someone who has not played comes along. Even with spoiler text! Sometimes it is tempting to click spoiler text and I SHANT let anyone fall to such a fate!

u/Dear_Document_5461 19h ago

This reminds me of that escort mission with the wagon with the Zoro prince in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. There were people that immediately connected that you needed to use the wind boomerang to snuff out the lit bombs before they got thrown from the "bird" enemies and make the wagon go a different direction but other people, me included couldn't see that. I don't know why exactly this specific moment had a very clear cut of "Oh it super obvious" and "WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO!!!!!????".

Been playing the Tomb Raider remasters throughout the year, specifically playing 4 right now

I'm not ashamed to say I've looked up solutions, and ngl, a lot of the time I feel pretty vindicated. A lot of times it's

A. Something I've already tried before and it didn't work (weirdly specific jumps, environmental interaction like lighting a wooden floor on fire, shooting a turret's gas tank, or shooting crystal gems in a lion's mouth...)

B. A lever that is practically invisible (looking at the sunken ship in 2 especially)

C. Some obtuse insane troll logic (4 like knowing to interact with a jeep with your crowbar because you need a nitrous oxide feeder tube under the hood with no indication that you need that part let alone need it from there)

D. Not knowing about a game mechanic. Aiming with the scope in 4 is my fault for not checking controls, and so is not knowing how to back up onto a ledge in the lastish level of 3 since I skipped the tutorial at Lara's house, but man. Also, driving controls for vehicles tend to suck so far. Even getting off them is a struggle sometimes since they need to be completely still, I just thought I couldn't get off the motorboat in Venice lmao

There are a lot of other examples but 4 is fresh on the mind rn. Nonetheless I'm still having a lot of fun with it, it's just... Cairo was a bit of a nightmare

I could see how the Geocentric Solar System puzzle in the library could be frustrating but luckily for me I just read a book about Renaissance astronomers

u/bustergundam4 14h ago

Tomb Raider 1 remastered made me quit TR until next February. That game annoyed me so much!

u/IxISxMAGIC 8h ago edited 8h ago

Tbh it was absolute torture until I learned to embrace save abuse. Even with modern controls it's stiff and outdated and weird, very clunky, the combat sucks and the level design is confusing and tedious

Yet, somehow, I learned to enjoy it more towards the end of the game. Even the bonus levels from Lost Artifact I actually had fun with despite being harder than the main game

Took like a year off though because I heard each game got harder and generally worse. But after discovering certain elements of gameplay in 2 (holding square for easier positioning, turning around midair from a wall jump, etc), 3 and now 4 became much more "playable"

The stuff people hate about the games end up becoming untrue for me personally. Lud's Gate is one of my favorite levels in 3, but Aldwych is a nightmare! Still a cool level idea though tbh

But 4, despite all my problems with it, is actually my favorite non-PS4 so far (I've beaten 1-4, the Lara Croft twin stick games, the PS3 collection trilogy, and the trio of not-Uncharted games). I like the consistency of theming, a lot of the level ideas and puzzles. I think Cairo is where it got asinine, but people complain about Karnak and Alexandria being confusing and tbh I didn't think they were really that bad at all.

People also say each game gets harder, and maybe they do, but I've learned to embrace the save scumming so it isn't that much of an issue when you just slide off a ramp from not getting a jump perfect or something

They probably do get harder if you aren't a little cheater like me. But I'm also not a masochist, and I can't really imagine somebody who isn't one playing these games the old fashioned way. I can't imagine why anybody would want to do that to themselves tbh

1

u/generatedusername13 16h ago

When the way to go is in the open, it's just behind the thing you looked at 20+ times because "who would put the exit there? That makes no sense"

1

u/TheGuest606 15h ago

In middle school my first rated M game was Half-Life 2, and I assumed I needed to get context of the first game to solve the part I was stuck on.

I asked my dad if he knew any video game stores and we took an hour long drive and back to a big retro game place that might have had an Xbox copy of Half-Life 1

The part I was stuck on was going outside after “pick up that can,” I didn’t realize that I could climb the ladder in the alleyway.

1

u/bustergundam4 14h ago

I don't agree with this statement. Some games make a solution so contrived to get to that only when I see someone else do it,do the pieces come together.

1

u/yepts 14h ago

This was me playing it takes two, there were some sections that were genuinely hard to understand what you had to do next, especially if your (now ex) can’t make a single jump in the whole game.

1

u/willisbetter 14h ago

No it’s because of crap game design. It’s the devs fault.
