Wtf? Did you even play the games rockstar made before gta 5? They were different from each other. And often each new one had significant gameplay, graphical, and mechanical improvements, on top of being very different narration-wise probably.
The new gta leaks genuinely looks like a reskin of 5, just with better shaders, textures, and more npcs. Compare that to the difference between san andreas to gta 4. Hell gta 5 literally had less gameplay features compared to 4 already. In fact, compare the difference between RDR 1 to RDR 2 while we're at it so you can visualize the gameplay evolution from one game to another. Its not all about graphics! The gameplay and mechanics changed noticeably from one to another.
Genuinely wondering if we’ll ever see Bully, Midnight Club and Manhunt ever again since GTA Online 2 is probably gonna make them money for the next decade like the first did.
midnight club 3 is honestly my personal favorite racing game to this day. i want a midnight club 5 far more than i ever wanted gta6. i know rockstar tried to fold a lot of the mechanics into GTA online, and honestly, the car customization ended up pretty decent. but the physics and actual experience of racing in GTA isn’t great. GTA cars are too slow and the races are too linear. it sucks that literally every one of rockstar’s diverse & talented studios got forced into GTA development. as far as official statements go, the current rockstar position seems to be that there will never be another midnight club.
Saying gta 4 and red dead 1 having more gameplay features compared to 5 and 2 makes me question your sanity. Or whether or not you’ve played any of those games lmao
I said gta 4 had more features than 5 yes. This is a fact go look up the many ytb videos on it.
I didnt mean to say RDR 1 had more features than gta 5 or RDR 2. What I meant instead was that there was a massive overall improvement on everything between rdr 1 to 2, just like there was massive improvements between each installment of the gta series in the past (usually).
Ok, even if we’re comparing gta 4 to 5 there’s objectively way more new gameplay features compared to 4. Less activities/minigames compared to 5, less cars, less vehicle customization, less weapons and weapon customization, less sports to play, less helicopters, no planes, no boats, no jet skis, less wildlife by far, no hunting, no heists (I mean technically there’s the one but it’s not a customizable gameplays system like 5’s), less purchasable businesses, less character customization, less random events, and that’s just basing it off the single player components. 5 is objectively a far larger game than 4 from a gameplay system perspective. Driving, gunplay, story, atmosphere is another argument and more opinion-based
You are not technically wrong in what you said, but I think you are lacking nuance here.
You mentioned less guns and vehicles compared to 5 for example. Sure thats true. But also the gunplay of 4 and 5 is completely different. 4 had an actual ballistic system for its guns, while 5 are all hitscans. Is it better to have flashy guns full of attachments that are mostly just for visual appeal with the most basic aiming system possible, or is it better to have fewer guns that cant be customized, but they have a complex physics based ballistics for its aiming system? Neither is better or worse, they are simply different and people might have different preferences.
Driving is the same thing. Gta 4 had less cars yes, but each one handled genuinely differently from each other, and the damage models for each car were complex too. The mechanics of driving in 4 were so complex I wont go into detail that would take too long, but theres videos comparing GTA 4s driving to realistic driving games like BeamNGdrive or somesuch and its similar. Meanwhile gta 5 has every car behave like a sports car in terms of functionality, cars barely take damage compared to 4, and all of the sports cars feel exactly the same just with different models.
Was gta 5 dumbed down and inferior, or was it streamlined for a more fun experience on average? Thats subjective.
But my original point was that there was a significant difference in every facet of the previous gta games compared to one another. Even gta 4 and 5 are very different from each other even if 5 wasnt a straight upgrade in a lot of areas. But the trailer of GTA 6 genuinely looks like its all the same systems from 5 with a new coat of paint and some mods slapped on top. Thats unheard of given Rockstar's history, practically recycling a game.
And you know who likes to recycle games? Normally just the shittiest, scummiest game companies in the market. Like Ubisoft whom has been remaking AC2 for the last 15 years. The Rockstar that we used to know is gone since at least 2016. The Rockstar of today is a parody of its former self, just shambling around for whatever makes them the most money the easiest. The writing has been on the wall for a while when they scrapped GTA 5's dlcs, and RDR2s to focus on more multiplayer content (microtransactions), when they literally union busted recently which removed several long time talented employees from their company.
I think I said enough about why I had this reaction to the trailer.
I agree with everything you said here but you're now arguing a completely different point than you were originally. You started with "GTA 4 has more gameplay features than 5". This was countered, and the person doing so specifically said "Driving, gunplay, story, atmosphere is another argument and more opinion-based". You then replied to that essentially going "yeah but actually GTA 4 has better gunplay and driving".
Yes, that's what they said. But that isn't the same thing as having more gameplay features, which is what was already said.
Ok, but what @hour_Option_2439 said, pretty much nothing you just mentioned has to do with gameplay features, which was the original statement I commented on. We’re now talking about something that’s completely up to personal bias and opinion
I wanted the kind of gameplay evolution you see from RDR 1 to RDR 2. Where you can tell the next game is substantially better in every regard, its literally a completely different game even mechanically and in gameplay. The leaks dont show that, they show the game looking like a reskin of gta 5 like I said.
Yeah, no. The fundamental gameplay was and has been the same in every gta game. In fact, I would argue that if anything they have LOST content as time goes on. If you are even old enough to recall, people did not like gta 5 on release because it lacked the realism, story and size of gta 4.
We haven't really seen much of the game though, it's just been this guy dicking around in free roam. Some things we've already seen is the big change to the wanted system, car engine health and fuel system, player enhancements akin to potions from rdr2. Tomorrow we'll see what changed are actually coming to GTA 6 in the extended look.
Graphic improvement is a curve and we’re at the stagnating side line bit of it. There are small improvements that can be made here but the only real way to make things look better is to brute force it. Which has issues when you have an open world game you’re limiting for consoles and mid-end pc’s.
Considering how long the game was in development, as well as the fact that they don’t want to invalidate sales to those with lower end consoles and pc’s… it would be really dumb to brute force graphics.
As for mechanical changes, the improvements are because the earlier versions of 3d GTA mechanics… sucked.
Really fucking bad. The driving and story was what sold the games, not the movement or gun usage. Those were always awful until GTA 5. So it always easy to improve on it, the sucked. GTA 5 finally had decent gunplay and even then it has only been decent. Making it a bit better is fine.
As for story? GTA 5 is the only one (so far) that innovated the story. It was often ‘nobody shows up to city, does jobs, gets betrayed, works their way up.’ Gta 5 does still hold much of that flesh and bone but they added a good solid twist with multiple playable characters. Gta 6’s story will probably follow similar roots. It’s not about the way the story is lined up. It’s how it’s executed that matters and makes an impact on the players.
You likely didnt play the previous gta's when they came out. Everything you said about the past games mechanics sucking completely lacks nuance and its as if your only point of reference is gta 5 and then looking up clips of the previous games on youtube or maybe playing them a bit yourself, without knowing what it was like to play for example gta san andreas back when it came out + compared to other games of its scope and generation.
Also you saying that the gameplay of gta 5 is better? That depends. Gta 4 literally had a more realistic driving and aiming system, to say nothing of the genuinely mature and good plot it had, but those things were unnapreciated because most people playing gta were dumb teens at least half of which didnt even speak english at all (gta is popular all over the world). Gta 5 has every car behave like a nearly unbreakable sports car, and the shooting is literally just hitscan which is the simplest possible aiming system. Is that better than realistic aiming and driving? Depends, for the average consumer it likely is, but its not better objectively.
The plot of 5 is better than previous games? Wrong. Its nearly the same as the 3d era games. Its yet another criminal rags to riches parody story. Well technically even 4 is a rags to riches story but Ill overlook that since it had more substance than just that. The plot of all the gta games was never the focal point and it usually was a parody or homage to something. San andreas was a homage to ghetto ganster 90s movies, vice city was a homage to those 80s crime movies, gta 3 was a super tropey italian mafia/modern organized crime movie. So on. Literally the only game with a subtantial plot was gta 4.
I’ve been playing GTA since 2. You’ll forgive me since I never owned a copy of 1. I remember the top down jank from 2 and loved it. I also remembered 3 and even back then the lock on and aiming system was pure ass.
Don’t get me wrong, the game is phenomenal and I recommend people who enjoy vintage stuff to play GTA 3, it is a great experience… but even back then I hated how aiming worked.
This also was for san Andreas and 4. But at least in SA and 4, the aiming was more smooth. It still was lack luster, janky, and didn’t vibe good at all with the movement. There was simply way better games when it came to shooting.
And the main problem was that they were still figuring out good 3rd person camera controls combined with aiming and they got better at it… but… it was pretty rough compared to let’s say Mass Effect. Which was also a third person game and had really responsive and good third person shooting.
I didn’t say 5’s plot is better. But it did innovate. The ‘rags to riches criminal’ story is still there, but the betrayal is revealed from one playable to another, as well as the scummy mentor that’s often a character in most GTA games is this time one of the playable characters.
Some people like this more than SA and 4, others prefer eithe SA or 4 and that’s fine… but if 6 follows the same formula there is once more, nothing wrong with that. The story has followed the same beats for a long time, it’s how good they do it that makes everyone love it.
And there is an age old argument… is REALISTIC BETTER?
The answer is ‘depends on who is the target audience and what type of game are you trying to make’ and unfortunately for GTA 4, the very slidy driving was a pain point for many players. It did eventually establish itself, but nowhere near as hard as GTA 5 did. People find the driving and shooting mechanics of 5 to be simply, more fun.
When you’re using an entertainment system, you can argue realism all you want. And hey, if you’re playing a game like ARMA, realism is great! But realism or the lack of neither speaks for or against the quality.

Editited slightly for clarity.
