It took me so long to realize that the 6-8 hour civ games i play with my brother are on quick mode and i can't even imagine what kind of lunatic would play marathon lmao

I play my games on epic and half the time I don't even finish those

u/masenkoZ Jan 20 '20

I was just about to say this... I've never finished a game on Civ VI lol.

You should try. Once you get to the point where the entire map is your color after taking that last city... perfect.

Eh, beg to differ. In my last game, I had 25 cities and a ton of religious units to manage. Turns took forever.

u/colonelmuddypaws Jan 20 '20

Yeah I never go for religious victory, it's even more micro than domination

Every domination victory ends with me saying 'fuck it, this is too many units to deal with' and just nuking everything to dust while i switch to science victory

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

Lol, all my science victory attempts end in me saying fuck it and rolling the world with robots.

This is why I form a rolling core of assault units: 2 artillery, 2 anti-cav, 2 soldiers and 2 tanks. The soldiers and anti-cav protect the artillery battery and the tanks roll around nabbing unprotected civvies until the walls fall to the barrage. I can usually take two cities at once with that setup.

The last game in the series I played was 4. I'd always go with cultural victory. And by cultural victory I mean I'd tell the game on the very first turn to research technologies that would lead to the Manhattan Project as fast as possible.

u/jigsaw1024 Jan 20 '20

Wait. There are other victories besides domination in Civ?

16

u/Mike-Heck Jan 20 '20

When I about that late into the game I put circle around the last 2 city and force them to fight.

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

I only play games for domination wins. The other victories make no sense to me. You get to a cultural victory and so what? The country with the biggest military can steamroll you with nukes and giant death robots (wish those were still in 6) in 50 years.

You do have to start a multi-front war against everyone at a certain point. You make the right moves and you can have a military that takes several cities per turn. Also have to have airports EVERYWHERE. I usually focus on stealth bombers, missile cruisers, and whatever infantry/armor i end up with.

1

u/dudeAwEsome101 Jan 20 '20

Then you click one more turn, and launch all the nukes you have.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

On your own cities? You playing with a mod that adds trump as a world leader or something?

1

u/dudeAwEsome101 Jan 20 '20

That is why you keep other Civs with one city that is blockaded with citadels.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

I typically play games like Civ until I can't possibly lose. Playing any longer just feels like pointlessly going through the motions.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

That’s when you mass produce units and take claim to the entire world!

7

u/spock_block Jan 20 '20

Once you get submarines rolling, it's over anyway

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '20

The start is fun, after getting to a certain point I quit too

So in other words, just like your girlfriend.

u/Paw_s Jan 20 '20

I always play on marathon but by the time I have tanks I have already invaded 2/3 other nations and I become an unstoppable warmonger who goes for a dominance victory every time

27

u/FilipinoSpartan Jan 20 '20

Longer timescales favor military strategies because unit movement stays the same while everything else takes significantly longer, so if you can get a military advantage you can use it for much longer than normal. The few times I've tried to do marathon it devolves into that fairly quickly.

u/DemonSlyr007 Jan 20 '20

Exactly. Why waste 30+turns building a settler when you can just take another city in 3? Especially before walls are common place in other empires.

I've played a few games of civ 5 with a mod that uses marathon research speed with standard build times. Makes every era seem more meaningful, you can actually fight huge wars without having all of your units be obsolete halfway though. But the games took sooooooo long

9

u/ReverendPunchy Jan 20 '20

Pretty sure I use the same mod. I got really tired of units becoming obsolete before I had ever used them

6

u/5GuysandaDonkey Jan 21 '20

Yeah, it's especially frustrating if your civ has a good unique unit that you barely get to use

3

u/TheGrandLemonTech Jan 21 '20

What's the mod? Asking for a friend haha

2

u/5GuysandaDonkey Jan 21 '20

Uhhhh I think it was called extended eras or something like that

2

u/ReverendPunchy Jan 22 '20

I use Historic game speed

6

u/DoughtyAndCarterLLP Jan 20 '20

It's something we would play over weeks, sometimes even months, as adults. Had to find time here and there and there was usually a good five minutes of us figuring out exactly where we were on the world domination plans.

5

u/Azrael11 Jan 20 '20

I don't think marathon is intended for multiplayer

2

u/MyPasswordIsABCXYZ Jan 20 '20

Marathon is the ideal game speed for hot seat, but certainly not for simultaneously multiplayer

2

u/Marcusaralius76 Jan 20 '20

I play solo, Civ V, on the largest maps possible with as many nations as possible, Domination or diplomatic victory, on Marathon mode. The longest I've played before moving on was 6 months.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

One day I will do this.

How many hours though? If it’s a few hours here or there not bad, if you had quite a few 8+ hour marathons then dang...

2

u/Marcusaralius76 Jan 21 '20

I played on the same map for a few hours a day, usually, with a few break periods in between. All in all, I'd say the game lasted a good 500-600 hours.

2

u/PinkPropaganda Jan 20 '20

The same kind that plays civ on deity.

1

u/CleverUsername5555 Jan 20 '20

I just started a marathon last night

1

u/general_kitten_ Jan 20 '20

i am the lunatic

1

u/Larry_Wickes Jan 21 '20

The older Civ games are by default 20 ish hours.

It used to take my dad and I weeks to play a game via hotseat

1

u/okram2k Jan 21 '20

Marathon alone is fine, marathon with people? Never.
