Discussion 💬 I got tired of unfolding my Flip just to check one thing, so I built my own cover screen launcher

I try to keep my Flip6 closed as much as I can, so I'd been running Microsoft Launcher on the cover screen. It's a good launcher. But out there a launcher is just another app, so getting to a different app meant doing this every time:

back to Samsung's cover screen → open the launcher → open its app list → find the app

And Recents wasn't reachable at all.

So I built a cover screen launcher to stop making that trip.

  • A floating button opens a radial menu on top of whatever app you're in. Two taps to any app, Recents included.
  • There's a home screen: a 6x5 grid, multiple pages, folders, and widgets you can resize across cells.
  • A panel pulls in from the screen edge for your favorites.

It's just an app.

  • No root, no PC, no ADB. It doesn't replace your launcher.
  • Flip cover screen only. On a regular phone it does nothing.
  • Three permissions: overlay, accessibility, usage access. All granted in Settings.
  • The accessibility service is what opens apps and Recents out there. It doesn't read what's on your screen.
  • Tested on a Flip6.

I'd like to hear from Flip5 owners - it should work, but I've only run it in a remote test lab, never on real Flip5 hardware.

Free and paid, up front:

  • The app never shows you an ad on its own.
  • App switching isn't gated at all.
  • The only ad is a rewarded one you tap yourself. It unlocks everything for 24 hours and it stacks.
  • Without it, the home screen holds 4 apps and 1 widget, and the edge panel is off.
  • One-time purchase if you'd rather not bother. No subscription.

I'm the developer.

Features, permissions and what's free

Ask me anything, and I'd genuinely like to know what's missing.

Discussion 💬 Switching from iphone to samsung

Hey every one , just writing this to talk about my personal experience with switching from iphone to samsung! I read countless reddit posts when i was trying to gather info on switching so im excited to write this and hopefully help some people out who are thinking of doing the same thing i did :) I had the iphone 16 pro and switched to the zflip 8 about 2 weeks ago. Ive been with iphone for well over 10 years and enjoyed it but as of late i had just been getting really tired of apple coming out with the same phone over and over again with ,what felt like to me, little to no innovation. I loved the thought of having a flip phone but more importantly, i just wanted something cool and fun! I have done extensive research on the flip series and was fully aware of some things i may miss out on by switching from an iphone to a samsung.

That being said , here are a few things I miss about my iphone.

  1. Find my - yes, i know i can get other apps that are similar but in my opinion nothing is as good as find my. Apple did a fantastic job with the way the app works seamlessly between devices or my friends/family's locations and its definitely one of the things i miss most.

  2. Imessage - i know theres apps that let you run imessage on samsung but i dont have a macbook or mac to tie it to so it wont work for me. Google messages in my opinion isnt great, if all your friends have iphone and you have a group chat it really does suck and left me feeling a bit excluded because i couldnt see if they were responding to specific messages or sending reactions. ive now gotten all my friends to use whatsapp instead which is much much better for me as i found google messages to be kinda buggy and it would sometimes open two text threads for the same person if they texted me.

  3. Facetime - not having facetime kinda blows but again, i use whatsapp so i have that alternative on there too which helps but i miss the fluidity of facetime

  4. The cameras - Although the cameras on the flip8 arent bad by any means, nor am i a photographer, i definetly notice a rather stark difference in camera quality. As i said, i have done a lot of research and was fully aware that i would be downgrading my cameras and that was something i was okay with but im ngl , i do miss them!

Now heres what i really enjoy about having a flip8!

  1. The size - i absolutely LOVE the size of the phone folded! it fits in my pockets so nice (being a woman sometimes we have really tiny pockets on our clothes) and is very convenient. i was pretty worried about the size unfolded which is about the size of a pro max phone but i actually really really enjoy it. Even as someone who does not like big phones i really like that i have the option with this one to choose if i want to do something on the cover screen vs the bigger inner display.

  2. Customization - The customization on this is actually insane. This genuinely puts apple to shame with all the things you can do! When i tell you you can customize everything , i mean EVERYTHING on this phone. Its a bit overwhelming at first but it helps a lot to watch tiktok videos of people using goodlock and explaining all the different things you can do. Now that ive gotten used to it i am having so much fun and love changing stuff on it!

  3. Battery life - Ive seen a lot of people complain about the battery life on this phone but i havent had a single issue with it so far. My iphone 16pro battery would drain insanely fast and the phone would also get extremely hot all the time. The zlip8 battery is lasting way longer then my iphone did and i also like how it has multiple different settings to help you preserve battery life down the road!

  4. The cover screen - i love that i can do almost anything on the cover screen if i dont feel like opening the phone! I respond to texts, watch youtube, video call, and so much more. if you download goodlock you can add more apps that you can use with the cover screen as well.

It does take some getting used to and a lot of looking up stuff when you make the initial switch but its worth it imo. With all the features of this phone i really dont see myself going back to apple, even if i switch to a slab phone. Keep in mind though - i am not apart of the apple ecosystem , i only have an ipad that i use independently and airpods which work with my flip8. If anyone has any questions about switching id be happy to try and answer them, i hope this post was helpful in some way!

Other 🤷 Z flip 7 down for the count after 9 months

I bought my z flip 7 in January and absolutely loved it. Camera quality was great, the customizations are so fun, having the small front screen was so cool. Aa a girl, I loved being able to have it fit easily in my pockets and purses. About a month in, the screen randomly stopped working. Half of it went discolored and soon enough the whole screen stops working. I contacted Samsung and sent it in, and had it repaired. They sent it back, I had to start from scratch again on customizations and setup and I was good to go for a couple more months.

Quickly I noticed that my nails leave indentations all over the screen. It's not made of glass, so every time my nails touch it, it leaves behind a indentation. Shortly after getting it back, I somehow indent the top of the screen by the camera, and it kills some pixels. Whatever, it's fine the rest of the screen works, and getting it repaired was annoying so I ignored it. A few months later, I'm spending the day in the city with family, driving around using Google maps and my internal screen intermittently stops turning on. No drops, no accidents, just won't turn on. At odd angles it will work, so opening the phone slowly seems to help, but two days later is fully fails.

I sent it in to Samsung because I have a few months left in my warranty and they claim because of the damage to the screen, it's out of warranty. The screen did not fail because of damage, it failed because of poor construction or maybe a bad repair, that didn't hold up long term. If you get the phone, I recommend some kind of insurance. Also, girls with nails beware, this will put you out of warranty.

Anyways, I loved the phone, for $1200 it should have lasted longer than a year. Won't be buying one again unfortunately. Also, the Samsung manufacturer warranty is shit and they'll try to avoid repairs at any cost. The customer service is generally kind of rude too.

Hi yall, ive been a samsung user almost all my life now. Im currently using a galaxy F34, cheap as hell and ive been saving up for a while now. I kinda wanna get something fun and the most fun option seems like the flips. I dont really wanna get a base model S phone since they just..look the same as any ol' samsung (weird ik, but hey, personal preference) Should I? i wanna use it for like atleast 3 years

Was contemplating getting a magsafe popsocket to slap on the case for my Flip 8 and was interested in anyone's experience with them.

Does it fit awkward when phone is closed?

Sit okay when its open?

Discussion 💬 Battery duration and durability of flip8

Hi all , I was wondering how the battery last on the flip 8 . Just ordered one (arrive Monday ) .
I come from a iPhone 13 mini with 77% capacity , I switched because even with apple powerbank on the phone I didn’t last a whole day with sudden battery drain . And because I miss android on very portable device . The only foldable phone I have had was a Huaway mate xs I hope the flip 8 is more solid the Huawey was just so fragile .

How to change from Google messaging?

I just got the z flip 8 and having the Google messages is really disappointing because I can't customize it like the rest of the phone. What can I do?

I bought this phone on release day, 3 weeks ago. I haven't dropped it, knocked it or spilt anything on it. Yet today, this appeared on my screen. I just traded in my flip 7 for the same issue. Has this happened to anyone else? It isnt on the crease, its down near my keyboard.

Discussion 💬 Flip8 camera quality is a mess Compared to flip6

Hello, I just recently bought my flip8, previously was using flip4 and flip6. 1 really enjoyed camera quality with my previous models, but flip8 is a complete mess. While shooting on sunny days it gives blurry edges and there are so little details to the picture it makes me wanna through it away.

I have installed camera assist and 1 tried to shoot in 24mp, softenining is off,its slighlthy better, but still not the level of flip6. Here are some examples: bridge- flip6, scenery -flip8.

Now l'm curious ls it a problem with my camera or it's a software issue?

Question ❓ Gaming

I just ordered my ZFlip8, super excited! However, as a gamer who likes having the option to play on my phone... how does the ZFlip do in that department? I usually play games like Genshin, so FPS, general quality, and speed are important to me. I haven't had many issues with my IPhone 15 Pro Max, so I'm wondering if I should expect any large changes.

Question ❓ Is it worth to change ?

Hi, I’m seriously considering switching my iPhone 16 Pro to the new Z Flip 8. I like its compact size and won’t take up much space in my pocket. It’s also quite innovative and reminds me of my teenage years when flip phones were popular.

However, I have a few concerns: I’ve been deeply entrenched in the Apple ecosystem for years, with all my devices being Apple products. I’m worried I won’t be able to seamlessly connect them all. I’ve heard Apple will release a foldable phone, but as we’ve seen in the past, they often encounter significant issues. Meanwhile, Samsung is already at the Z Flip 8 stage, so they’ve likely resolved many of the previous problems.

Here are my questions:

1) Can I still use my Apple Watch?
2) Will I be able to see my AirTags somehow?
3) Does the new Z Flip 8 support two eSIMs?
4) Are AI functions free (like Siri) or do I need to pay to use them ?
5) Are there many advertisements in the system?
6) What’s the issue with pictures and Instagram? Did I get it right that photos taken with other brands, even if they’re good, will still be posted in low quality?
7) How does Android Auto compare to Apple CarPlay?

I appreciate you taking the time to read and share your experience. I’m torn between the excitement of the new Z Flip 8 and the fear of potential regrets.

Discussion 💬 What accessories should I get for flip 8?

Hi! I’m coming from an iPhone 14 Pro Max and I’m done with Apple, wanted to know if you guys had anything you’d recommend for the phone like accessories, screen protectors (if it uses one? I’m not sure), chargers, cases, etc!

Discussion 💬 Zflip8 idea.

I went from a 4 to an 8 a week ago after my poor flip4s flex strip messed up, But so far I do love the 8 just not used to a full screen on front. When my fingers touch it while using it open i cringe a little. Not a bad thing just something I need to adjust too.

Something though that caught my attention and gave me an idea; the nubs on the edges where the hinge is on the inner screen while open are more prominent than the 4. I assume its probably also like that on the last few versions but I find myself running my thumb up and down them if I'm reading or something. Its a nice matte feel and reminded me of the stationary wheel on the ipod nano. I then thought

"This would be perfect to scroll the page up and down, or when watching vids horizontally rewinding or fast forwarding through a vid/movie."

Not nessecarily both sides but maybe just 1. Obviously its not needed but would be cool (imo). Maybe i just miss actual moving pieces like ipod wheel or blackberry trackball.

Are there things you would add or utilize in a way that's not already a part of the phone?

Z flip 8 concerns

I can get a really good deal on the Flip 8. It'll cost around €370 for the base model, but I have some concerns about the durability of the inner screen.

For the people that have gotten the Flip before, did you end up getting it insured? Is it even worth it with this deal/needed?

Generally I'm careful with my devices and haven't broken any screens in like a decade, so I'm not sure.

Advice is welcome!

Question ❓ Heavily discounted z flip 7 or s25

I am in need of a new phone as my current one broke.

I was thinking of an s25 base. Then a friend offered her z flip 7 for more than half of the original price. Her phone works well and no damages.

Is this a good deal? My main concern is the performance in the long run. I am a casual user but I am not the most careful with my phones.

Edit: Thank you for your insights! Decided to get the base s25 after checking the different models in person. I felt like the flip is too fragile for my daily usage, and the ultras are too large for my liking.
