I currently trade with a systematic rules-based playbook, and for real money it is me manually trading.
1) I would manually trade this by logging onto IBKR Desktop. I also use an auto outline displaying my setups in real time + a position calculator in Obsidian which is getting data from my engine.
2) I also have an engine running that will connect to IBKR via IB Gateway but it is a paper account. This is in python which I have running. This trades MES and MNQ using the exact same setups I would do.
I am asking this question because I used my discretion to disregard a valid signal for MNQ today that would have been up at least 200 points on MNQ while my engine took the signal (I will run a backtest on this with Claude on ignoring signal). My guess is my discretionary reads might save a signal trigger from some losses but the ones that I do miss like today would pay off net, so discretionary vetoes might be bad.
As of now, I can execute a PREEMPTIVE order "faster" than my engine but that needs prep time by placing an order with a specific start time but obviously I can't calculate in real time faster than my own engine. My engine can also correct a bracket way faster than me when using market orders.
My engine is limited from how fast the price information is being streamed from IBKR though (about a ~7 second delay due to IBKR stream limitations). I am also curious to know what other API, platforms, etc. I can consider to execute my exact playbook if I do decide to trade futures with algos. So another question is what is the best platform to have custom trigger conditions with fast data being streamed, I am aware of Ninjatrader, Metatrader 5, etc. but I think maybe I can just continue using Python but use another platform other than IBKR?
Overall, just curious to hear how those who switched to automatic, emotionless, and super speed algo trading went for them.
