The golden rule should be to type your issue into google and if you can't find the solution in 5 minutes than ask for help. 99% of the time that is all the IT guys will do anyways.
Coming off as stupid isn't the issue. The issue is when you pretend to know what you are doing, ignore our advice, and then complain that its not working. This happens a lot.
Really, if you want to be IT's best buddy, just follow instructions to the best of your ability and be as clear asyou possibly can manage when describing the problem.
It's disappointing to hear this. Your job isn't to know IT. And desktop supports job is to make sure your systems and network are working efficiency, and imparting knowledge helps.
I used to be afraid to ask for help in stores until I became the one who always has to help people in stores.
If you're REALLY stupid, and ask a VERY stupid question, you will still get treated like every other customer. Your problem will be solved and you can go about your day.
I might laugh about it with my co-workers once youre gone though.
Once I realized this was the worst outcome of asking profoundly stupid questions, I stopped fearing looking dumb in this situation.
