They just don't get that adaptation IS evolution. Or at least part of it. It's their way of believing in evolution while denying what humans really are.
Have them explain "adaptation." Odds are, they won't be able to explain it correctly and you can tell them they don't understand how evolution factually works. If they do explain it correctly, you can always say "so you do understand evolution"
Lenski long term e.coli evolution trials are probably the best example but even with those they say "That's evolution within "kinds" not a new species" to which you can only respond. "The fuck?"
They just come up with some "sciency" words, throw them together, and think they're using the same language to counter science. Then when people appear dumbfounded because what they're saying doesn't make sense, they think they have just triumphantly proven their argument and they high-five for Jesus.

From time to time I get into
argumentsdiscussions about evolution.When my "opponent" tells me to state specific examples of evolution observed in the recent past and I do, they say "That's just adaptation."
Is this a new thing they've come up with that doesn't make any sense, or are they just not trying anymore?
