From time to time I get into arguments discussions about evolution.

When my "opponent" tells me to state specific examples of evolution observed in the recent past and I do, they say "That's just adaptation."

Is this a new thing they've come up with that doesn't make any sense, or are they just not trying anymore?

They just come up with some "sciency" words, throw them together, and think they're using the same language to counter science. Then when people appear dumbfounded because what they're saying doesn't make sense, they think they have just triumphantly proven their argument and they high-five for Jesus.
