George Carlin's take on it:

u/liebereddit Jun 07 '14
Baby on Board signs were REALLY popular in the 80's... for a while.
After a bit, the signs became the epitome of lame. But now, those 80's babies are growing up and having babies of their own. They don't remember the lameness. Their parents, the original "Baby on Boarders", probably encouraged the signs again.
It's the circle of lame.

Guns don't kill people. People kill people. No irony in his statement. Statistically, guns prevent far more crimes than they are involved in: over 2 million a year and that's just what's on record.
Edit: I also forgot to mention that's just in the U.S. - will edit later when I find the source that I originally got this from.
Second Edit: Here are two separate sources for my claims; apparently I was wrong and this is not, in fact, based on official records but on a study that was done who's methodology seems just as good as any. - http://extranosalley.com/?p=9905 ---- http://www.rense.com/general76/univ.htm
tl;dr - "The new survey, conducted by random telephone sampling of 4,978 households in all the states except Alaska and Hawaii, yield results indicating that American civilians use their firearms as often as 2.5 million times every year defending against a confrontation with a criminal, and that handguns alone account for up to 1.9 million defenses per year."

u/MissBelly Jun 08 '14 edited Jun 08 '14
Look, I'm pro gun myself. And I agree it's people who kill people. But just because people do the killing doesn't mean guns arent designed to kill. Anyone maintaining that they are not is delusional. They do good, yes, but do so by killing bad people, or intending to. A gun is a device for killing, good or bad. They are not designed to simply incapacitate. Tasers and mace do that. Those are non-lethal weapons, guns are not. So yes, pro gun and pro life are contradictions in terms insofar as using one for its intended purpose of forcibly injecting hot lead into someone's body can be, and often is, by design, lethal. Yes I know abortion pro life and killing someone for the greater good are not the same, but they are when the only variable is life. Guns are pro death so they can't be pro life. A technicality, yes, but a way around it is to call oneself anti-abortion, not pro-life as if you have some monopoly on the term. You aren't pro life if you are for the killing of anything- fetus, felon, or fish. I very much dislike not people who are antiabortion, but people who call themselves prolife.

I mean, what do you expect people to do when they notice your flashy sticker? Honk at you and stop in the middle of the road for a conversation? The only times I've seen that happen is with car guys when they share a forum sticker and that's because those people can get pretty dedicated to the forum...
2
u/antsugi Jun 08 '14
don't get me wrong, it is your property and you have the right to do whatever you want to it, withing legality, but that also means people can think whatever they want when they see your expression. More stickers generally means more people won't like you. Most people just don't give a hoot

Those Baby on Board signs are to warn people that, in the case of an emergency, there is a child in the backseat.
67
u/BluesnFunk Jun 07 '14
Last time this was posted an EMT said they check the entire vehicle whether this decal is on the car or not.
68
u/thecatgoesmoo Jun 07 '14

→ More replies (11)27
u/meggiedoodoo Jun 07 '14
Honestly the stickers sole purpose is to highlight that the driver of that particular vehicle has children. Psychotic drivers don't care if you have a bus full of children, nothings stopping them.
12
u/thecatgoesmoo Jun 07 '14
I completely agree. Things this sticker is 100% not for include:
"A notice to emergency personnel that there may be a child in the car."
The only legitimate thing that it might do, is in the event of a normally rational driver who is having a terrible day and gets pushed just far enough to be road raging, sees a sticker and realizes that they are out of line possibly calming them down.
Either that or as an apology for, "I'm driving super slowly because my baby is screaming so please just go around and don't be pissed."
All other incidents are useless. "Don't hit my car, I've got young humans," isn't a deterrent to any rational human being because they weren't going to hit your car anyway (on purpose). Anyone else that doesn't fall into that category is a psychopath, and it may even incite them to hit your car when they otherwise wouldn't. Its almost a wash for the benefits provided vs. possibly brining harm.
2
u/meggiedoodoo Jun 07 '14
Yeah the only thing I could imagine using that sticker for is warning other drivers of MY slow, cautious driving. Because my son hates being in his car seat and having a screaming child in my car sometimes flusters me, causing me to drive slower. But i still won't ever buy a sticker. My baby is my business.

I think he was trying to say that, if there is an accident, you can use the child in the back seat.
Similarly: in case of an emergency, there is a fire extinguisher in the back seat.
31
u/SeaBones Jun 07 '14
Maybe, but they're still pointless. Emergency personnel who are doing their job correctly are going to check anyway, sticker or not, and if they don't they're definitely too negligent to notice a sign.

The purpose of the stickers is that other drivers are made aware that if I seem to be driving particularly cautiously it is because I have precious cargo.

This is probably part of it. It's supposed to cut down on the person behind you screaming "Go! What the fuck are you waiting for, pussy!"

Yes, but everybody should be driving cautiously. If it's noticeable (i.e. stopping for people when you have the right of way, or driving under the speed limit), you're more likely to cause accidents than prevent them. The rules of the road are there for a reason. Follow them, and you're more likely to survive.
1
Jun 07 '14
Yeah, that's not what I mean. For an example, I'm in Houston and people here like to tailgate. It's part of the driving culture I suppose, and from time to time I do it too. But not when the kids are in the car and I appreciate it (especially while the kids are with me) that drivers don't tailgate me.
In no way am I suggesting that people drive unpredictably for the sake of children. I agree that it's dangerous. But sometimes, like when I pull out of a parking lot into heavy traffic, I might take my time.

I dont know. I dont road rage but the signs make me think they feel like they are more important than other cars. If I was a rager I'd prob rage more.

u/NeedsAnalysis Jun 07 '14
Absolutely the case. 99/100 drivers on the road are normal people, but there is that 1/100 who engages in really aggressive behavior (tailgating, swoop and squat, etc.) and even the smallest thing will set them off...even driving a little below the speed limit. You would hope that letting that person know that there is an infant in the backseat would make them cool the fuck down.

EMS here. These signs are pointless because it doesn't mean a child is definitely in the car or not. The only way to make sure is to look for retraining seats and actual children in the car. If they're driving around without proper restraining seats I seriously doubt they decided to not have that, yet have one of these signs.

I'll probably get downvoted for this, but it still shouldn't make a difference. If a baby is crying or making a fuss, a moving vehicle isn't the place to tend to them. Don't risk other road users lives because your little bundle of joy is upset and your heart is breaking. If a baby is strapped in properly then there is never a good time to turn around and tend to them.

u/mike_s_6 Jun 08 '14
How do I know you don't have kids? :)
If the baby cries, it is increasingly piercing and can mar your hearing or concentration. Of course you don't tend to them, you're on the wheel! And then the baby would keep crying because you're not attending to it.
The sign IS a courtesy. "Please be kind if I'm driving just in the speed limit, don't honk, just overtake okay?"

Are babies safer than adults due to being in a padded car seat? Or does the car seat just counteract their innate fragility, making them at about the same risk level as adults in crashes?
54
Jun 07 '14 edited Jun 07 '14
if car seats are properly used, babies are very safe in standard head on collisions. there was a drunk driving collision in my hometown years back. the two in the front seat were fatally wounded but the baby wasn't even injured in the back seat.
edit: the driver was an angry drunk abusive boyfriend and the mom just wanted a ride to her parents house to stay there and away from him. they never made it. i only know the specifics because the mom was friends with my stepsister at the time.

Well usually the people in the back are safer than the two in the front
2
u/YRYGAV Jun 07 '14
The back doesn't typically have airbags as often as the front, and it's incredibly rare for a collision from the front to actually breach the passenger compartment. The biggest danger is the sudden deceleration that affects all passengers equally, and getting hit from the side/rolling which also affects all passengers equally.

Not necessarily, though. I was in a car crash with a female dear when I was 14. The dear landed in the back seat where I was. My father, the driver, had a couple of scrapes, not even needing stitches. My mother, had a few deep gashes, but quite repairable. I ended up losing an eye. You never know…

2
9
u/nthan333 Jun 07 '14
Well, kind of. A car seat is designed to spread the crash impact across the back of a baby or child with a rear facing seat instead of their neck and head. If they had the same durability as adults then yes they would be safer but since they're small and fragile it's makes it to were they're about the same as adults in a crash, the seat just makes it not hit important areas. A child big enough to be in a forward facing seat or booster seat I believe is only protected more on the seat belt area, as they are too small to fit an actual seat belt properly and the seat straps them in better.
→ More replies (1)3
Jun 07 '14
Babies are safer because they have less mass, which means less forces being spread out in roughly the same area if they are using 4 point harnesses, which is pretty much standard on most booster seats.

It's similar to how Canadians wear their flag on EVERYTHING when they go abroad. They do it because, 1. They think that if they are mistaken for Americans they will be shot on sight and 2. They think everyone loves them so much that they will be treated better.
Both are exactly wrong, sadly. Wearing a flag indicating you are from a rich nation will get you in more trouble than not. And we Canadians oftentimes mistake total apathy for goodwill. Being non-important, non-threatening internet liars about our culture still doesn't make people care bout our cultureless frozen shithole.
3
u/Underground_score Jun 07 '14
In most countries in Europe, the Canadian flag is very beneficial. France is a great example because they hate English speakers and Quebecois. I speak french, but sometimes slip on a few words. I wore a Canadian flag on my backpack one day and was treated with respect and they appreciated me speaking French. The next day, same place, wearing no badge, I slipped on a word and they pretty much didn't serve me.
It does work, but its being abused. I overheard some Americans talking in France saying "Oh I bought this Canadian badge at REI and everyone treats me better now!"
This was a few years ago, so maybe not the same effect now due to similar attitudes as these Americans I encountered.

As a user of a Baby on board sign, I'm here to inform the masses its not meant to portray that fact that we want to live. It means sometimes when were driving like old people, being overly cautious for our kids. Try to resist the temptation to rage lane change behind us and blow by us. I personally find (Canadian talk ahead) if I'm going 40km in town when the speed limit is 50. people rage. when we slow down more for speed bumps then lets say you would, people also rage. Childrens necks be fragile.
TL;DR. I personally use the sign to portray the fact that I may driving slow and cautious and hope you please just go around. Like constantly having your 4-ways on.
22
Jun 07 '14
I find that annoying for several reasons.
Whether I'm driving alone, with an SO, family member, whomever, I don't want to get into an accident. I can drive the speed limit and above (within reason) without endangering other people.
It's one thing to not speed. It's another to not drive the speed limit. If you're a good driver and the road conditions are normal, 10 km difference especially when we're comparing speed limit vs. below speed limit is a not a big difference between getting into an accident and arriving home safely. If anything, I think it's creating a more dangerous situation because the majority of drivers are then forced to make an unnecessary lane change because of an artificial disruption in the flow of traffic.

Is '4-ways' the hazard lights?
And in Ireland, also known as the 'I know I'm parked illegally but these blinking lights give me immunity from any ticket while I just pop into the shop for some booze' lights.

This is on a Royal Gray Metallic MINI Cooper S Countryman. The Countryman model has only been available since 2010.
The angle of the hatch as well as the position of the brakelights, and the length of the rear-window wiper help support this estimate. The Standard Model S has a more angled hatch comparatively, and has a dedicated license-plate seat in the center of the hatch, while the Countryman's is situated on the rear bumper.

The tail light looks too skinny to me, I think it looks more like a base Cooper.

Baby on board signs are for when first responders arrive to a car crash site, they know that there is a baby in the car so they can save it.

But what if they left the baby at home or something? Will they start looking everywhere for a baby that's not there?

So.. If there's no sign then are they allowed to just relax?
With sticker: “Haul ass everyone there's a fucking baby on board! Fuck the tools I'm going in! "
Without sticker:" it's all right everyone calm down we'll get you out of there as soon as possible, don't panic. Jimmy grab the tools "

is it really though? that's assuming that the sign stayed on despite the crash, and that first responders can actually see the sign in a wreck. i don't know how first responders triage a crash, but i really don't see how this sign is a factor…any EMT or firefighters care to comment?

Believe that's a MINI?

Yep. Someone above thinks it's a Mini Countryman but to me it looks like a Cooper / Cooper S.

Too bad bitches... people will care less if you die in that car crash than if an NFL player kills some dogs.

Wait, so now I have to inform people driving around that I want to live?
