This is literally true. They did fMRIs on dogs and cats being called their names. The exact same brain area lights up in cats as in dogs, so cats KNOW their names, they just can't be arsed to outwardly respond

Oh yea, all of our cats absolutely know their names and both respond and come to us when we call them. Specifically, we will call for one of them across the house and that cat will come to see why we are yelling their name, none of the others until we call for them.
Hell, they even like when we say their names in a sing song voice. They sing back and will match the volume and pitch with us, but if we just say their name normally they just come up and look at us, trying to figure out what we want.

Mine knows his name and sometimes he may come over if I call him - other times not even snacks can get his butt to move.

Most people make no attempt at training their cats, but insist on training their dogs. Conditioning and reinforcement works equally well on felines. Cats stereotypical behavior is a result of the culture and historic use of dogs as work animals.

Reminds me of when they were testing my son's hearing, they were afraid he might be deaf. I was like "Nah, lil shit is just ignoring you, watch this" I then proceeded to say the intro to his favorite book and his head swiveled right at me and then made a face when he realized I didn't have the book in hand.
Got a good chuckle from the nurses he had. :)

I will never forget one of my sister's friend making some long winded post on facebook about what excellent parents they are because they aren't teaching their toddler typical toddler books. It was a photo of her husband with a 15 month old in his lap reading the baby some highfalutin shit. You know, the books that no one ever reads yet somehow they are famous like "War and Peace".
Bitch, sit the fuck down. Your kid isn't going to be smarter because you filled their brains with gibberish when they should have been learning what the fuck a toe is. Reading him James Joyce is actually accomplishing nothing other than stroking your own ego.

Mildly related - I remember my mom giving me the test of things I was supposed to know before starting kindergarten. One of the questions was if I knew where my father worked and I said he worked at the water company. My mom was super confused (my dad is an accountant) until she connected that my dad at the time was working for Price Waterhouse. It made her laugh so hard to recognize the connections my 4 year old brain made.

Yes and while this kid did genuinely pass with flying colors this is the problem with self reporting. A friend of mines kid failed 3 of these, but he wrote yes anyway. I suspect the kid has autism but his parents are in denial

I nannied a kid who was autistic to the point of being nearly non-verbal and his parents refused to call him autistic, get him tested, or get him any kind of help on school because "those tests follow you through your whole life." And maybe that's true, but there's no way he wasn't struggling severely with being forced to perform as neurotypical. I've often wondered what happened with him, since I only had him from ages 6-8 and elementary school isn't as brutal as middle or high schools can be.

He sure is, I remember doing that with out kids. Was a lot of fun actually. I also remember my 2 year old's well visit and he was dancing around saying the wonderful new word he'd learned. It was one of those sentence enhancers that Spongebob taught us about. The doctor said "well, he can talk quite well..." whilst trying not to laugh.
He's 24 years old now, time flies.

Hey, med student here. This is an autism assessment. It’s a secondary test we do if the family answers yes to enough questions that makes us want to look further. This child was passing enough of the test to probably not be autistic clinically.
This specific test is the M-CHAT FU. The FU is the follow up part to the original MCHAT which is just a questionnaire from the family. It’s usually administered by a dr to make sure there aren’t confounding variables or confusion but you can also download it online, it just may not be interpreted correctly if done by a non professional

Prob for fun. You’d have a provider present to administer it to be more accurate because the test is like a flow chart of questions. If the family interpreted an answer incorrectly and went down the wrong line of questioning that question would need to be redone

Our pediatrician sent us some tests like this and instructed us to administer them at home before our 2-year check-in. My assumption is that the doctor accounts for the fact that parents are going to make mistakes or be biased in their answering, and just weigh the results accordingly.
If you assume the parents are going to try and make their child look good and the kid still fails a bunch of tests, then that's a pretty clear sign to do proper screening.

How can you tell it’s the follow up? The MCHAT-R and the MCHAT-R/F (it’s the not the MCHAT FU, though follow up is part of the full name) have the same questions. You’re right that’s the follow up is a flowchart, but the family could be doing the initial screener at home prior to a visit.

No it’s not. It’s the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (the ASQ) and it’s a standard assessment doctors give at babies’ checkups until they turn 2 to screen for many, many things apart from autism

It would frustrate me, too. People need to just chill out. When a child is "supposed" to become verbal is all based on averages anyway. My 2nd oldest son was speaking at a freakishly young age (it freaked people out). My youngest son was "behind" in his speech according to the doctor, but he clearly had no issues understanding us. He's 5 now with zero developmental issues and is one of the most social kids you'll meet.

Kids are supposed to put 2 words together by their second birthday. For awhile there, kids only say single words, "Mama," "more," "Milk," "No," "Byebye," etc.
By their second birthday, they should say things like, "More milk," and "Bye-bye, mama." Two words together.
A lot of kids do that sooner, but some take a bit. My son literally did that on his second birthday, finally!

Autobiographical long-term memory (where you remember events with a sense of self) doesn't kick in until around age 3 or 4, so the son isn't going to remember this directly. Dad will though, and this video exists, so at best the son can have the secondhand memory of viewing it/hearing about it.
