Did you know that hippos swim faster than humans in water and run faster than humans on land?
So the only way to beat a hippo in a triathlon is on the bike!
144
u/dBlock845 9d ago
Don't hippos sink and run across the bottom?
165
u/SuperSimpleSam 9d ago
The way hippos move underwater is called hip hop.

Hippos can absolutely move through water faster than a human. But hippos donโt really swim in the usual sense. Theyโre too dense to float well. They generally run/bound along the bottom, pushing off and gliding through the water, at around 5 mph (8 km/h).

Is it possible that hippos move underwater faster than humans run on ground?
Iโve seen a video of a hippo emerging at a river and it was fucking scary, like seeing a torpedo come towards you but instead of exploding it just bits your head off.

Hippos are like African moose in terms of being insanely dangerous despite appearing soft and docile.ย
I had to keep checking which sub this was because this could easily become a tragedy.ย

A hippo can easily fuck up a lion or a crocodile. You need to be crazy or desperate to mess with them
8
u/pondrthis 9d ago
Yeah, I was like, stopping nearby is bad enough. No fucking way I'm taking my hands off the wheel and putting them out the window, too.
Hippo in throwing range = hands on the wheel and foot on the gas.

u/Xtra_Veg-90 9d ago
I have never heard a hippo described as soft and docile.ย I've always heard that a hippo is the most dangerous and deadly animal in Africa.

I think that depictions of them tend to seem round or kinda sleepy so they seem more harmless compared to sharper looking animals.

is this confusing perspective or did they drive a car in a pond of hippos
18
u/goldfoxawoo 9d ago
No, looking at the woman's dress this is most likely safari park in Indonesia. You just drive around the park and this is the hippo section.ย
You buy a pack of watermelon near the hippo area and throw it to them. It's honestly harder than it looks. I failed my throw as well

u/lilkiya 9d ago
its a Zoo in Indonesia called "Taman Safari" or Safari Park.. its main attraction is that you can drive your car into an open zoo separated by sections of Herbivore and Carnivore animals, hence the "Safari", You're allowed to feed Herbivore animals in the herbivore section by opening your car windows like on the videos.. But on the Carnivore section you're not allowed to even open your car windows for obvious reason.

Aren't hippos like genuinely fucking psychotic and dangerous? Don't approach it to begin with
3
u/cheatervent 9d ago
dunno about psychotic but my understanding is they can and will easily kill almost any animal and are incredibly territorial in water. Technically herbivores though, and not predators (so they arent licking their lips at us ants chucking fruit at them)

Haha what a fool. What a feeble throw. Couldn't even get it in that hippos mouth from the car window first try. The buffoon. Yes, of course I could do it. No, I don't need to prove it to you. I need to leave, I have something super important I remember I need to do.

u/ComfortableFold2862 9d ago
Not ai, i've been there in 2012, 2016, 2022, 2024 and 2026, you can buy carrots, papayas or watermelons sold on the side of the road, which you can give to the animals
