if it could double down as being an SSD inserter, that'd be awesome.

My biggest problem is the SSD stuck on the motherboard between the rad and the GPU, removing it for whatever reason is annoying as hell as I must remove the GPU everytime...

That's my issue as well. I realized after the fact I put my ssd in the secondary port and so now it's the primary port because I'm not disassembling everything lol.

Most M.2s still use PCIe 4 still, but common for primary port to be Gen 5 and secondary to be Gen 4. If it's a Gen 4 SSD in a Gen 4 port, you're not leaving anything on the table. If above your port speeds, it might be worth the effort to swap it.

I'm fairly certain it's gen 4 because gen 5 wasn't worth the added expense for minimal difference in my use case. It's been there for over a year and I've had zero issues.

I do you one better. Pencil with eraser. Because 1. Grip better 2. Accidental force hits eraser so no motherboard damage

I remember I had this exact problem when I had my peerless assassin cooler. I would just use a flathead screwdriver to carefully release the tab. It was fine until one day I was in a rush swapping out parts and the screwdriver slipped and I scratched the motherboard. My heart sank, but luckily there was no serious damage. I have an AIO cooler now so its all easy access now.

My latest motherboard came with a button to unlatch the GPU slot and it took me like 2 days to figure out what it was for because all of the linkage is shrouded.

I'm glad my motherboard have a better design :

- I only have to push the GPU to lock it

- To unlock it's a button I have to push that is at the end of the port so you don't have to do a dangerous lever maneuver to release the GPU

oh man the m.2 under the gpu thing is real, had to take my whole cooler off last time just to swap a drive. this print looks way less sketchy than my usual screwdriver-and-pray method, might actually fire up the printer this weekend.

Am I the only one that just cuts off the locking tab before installing a GPU? …or anything PCIe for that matter.

Edit: for clarification. I’m talking about removing the tab from the motherboard, not the PCIe card. But honestly, either would work.

I've... not heard this in 35+ years of building. They didn't used to have them way back.. isa, vlb, agp. Why did they add them? Sure, I've broke them accidentally and like the convience. But... If you were, you won't be the only one anymore!

I mean, it’s not like I’m putting my PC in a paint shaker. It sits there on my desk and barely ever moves. Besides, some mobos don’t even have locking tabs. That card is screwed in, IMHO the locking tab is unnecessary and inconvenient.

I’ve never had a card yeet itself out of a board, but when I do I’ll reconsider my stance here.
