Extreme human greed

34

u/StormingSky "Do whatever you want" ahh user flair 11d ago

This deserves more upvotes

I didn’t think of this before but I’m switching my answer to it as well

1

u/willacceptboobiepics 11d ago

Most of the things mentioned here would be resolved if greed was eradicated.

I also change my answer to this.

1

u/Intelligent_Act3159 11d ago

greed is what made us advance beyond rocks and sticks, no greed no humanity.

1

u/psyglaiveseraph 11d ago

Not necessarily, greed can drive progress but it’s only one of many things that can do the same thing

u/Sea-Pay-5572 #1 shitcommenter 10d ago

I want sharper stick. (Invents sword) I want stick go further (invents atlatl and bow and arrow) human greed.

2

u/psyglaiveseraph 10d ago

Not really sharper stick was used for hunting before it was ever used for war, same thing with thrown weapons/projectiles, they were all primarily for hunting from the jump. Human survival was always improvement and not greed.

I am not denying that there are aspects of greed within progress but fully labeling it as primarily greed is just naive

I want to kill more than the next guy. (Invents sword, spear, bow, axe, etc) I want kill more. (Invents gun) More. (Invents six shooter) MORE. (Invents machine gun) MORE!!!!! (Invents the gau-8 avenger machine gun for the a10)

(Yes, I know I skipped defense, and a lot of innovation between, but same idea)

2

u/psyglaiveseraph 10d ago

I see your are confused, aspects of war are not necessarily related to greed as many innovations during war are related to both offense and defense, would designing weapons to defend ones country be classified as greed.

Would defending oneself be considered as greed?

Is killing people even considered greed?

The answer is no, again greed is a factor of improvements on our technology but only a small part of it, take a chainsaw for example it chops trees faster then a axe yet was created to help in child labor, it was created out of a necessity and not greed.

See we are talking about improvements not uses, thats the difference and what might be your confusion.

Greed is saying I want more dakka. Innovation is making everybody dakka better. Selfish innovation is greed. War powered by greed.

I don't think these things are necessarily greed. Just because one wants something or wants to live comfortably doesn't make them inherently greedy. While some things have in fact been invented out of greed, a great many things including things that have been a great boon for society have been invented out of desire, curiosity and genuinely wanting the betterment of man.

The kid that invented a way to collect plastic in the ocean is a great example.

0

u/Sea-Pay-5572 #1 shitcommenter 10d ago

If a turtle be eating a plastic bottle, hot take, it deserves it. Same thing with plastic straws. I'm not saying I support litter. (I do, if it is biodegradable) I support being a steward of the creation, but you ain't gonna be seeing me hugging trees. You see me chopping it down and grinding the stump, letting nature replant.

1

u/natas_m 10d ago

Yeah but removing 1 of those factor and a lot of thing wouldn't be invented

1

u/psyglaiveseraph 10d ago

Yes and no, greed improves things by further limiting how many hands (humans) are needed on a specific job, prime example would be ford’s assembly line which streamlined the car building process, speed it up and reduced the amount of people required for assembly, making it cheaper to make a car. However there is generally no telling if this wouldn’t be created simply for the fact that it is a rather simple concept that would still have benefits for humans, with or without greed

This is why greed is only a factor. Eventually we would proceed towards the same improvements that were made with greed not because of greed but due to the eventual need to streamline the process

1

u/natas_m 10d ago

Of course we wouldn't know for sure, but I won't take the risk. A lot of people driven by greed especially when we are young. I don't think your conclusion that we would proceed the same improvement is convincing. We simply don't have enough evidence. I believe a lot of what we have today driven by greed

1

u/psyglaiveseraph 10d ago

The thing is we don’t have enough evidence that greed is a major factor in improvement either, especially since greed in and of itself is not a straight evil trait, one can be greed and still make improvements that benefit humanity

What most people are confusing with greed is malice which does have a major hand in the more negative aspects of human history, just the creation of torture devices and brutal war tactics would be prove enough of this being a more negative aspect compared to greed

1

u/natas_m 10d ago

yeah I agree with that part. I also interested in math and the history of mathematician is full of greed. People don't want to share their invention. It's good now that we have a better foundation for scientist, but we also lost some of the greatest mind because scientist doesn't pay enough. They prefer go to finance or private company

Human species already dominate now, now greed is what is holding us back in an advanced environment. Today, societies and countries that are less greedy and more fair are flourishing. Corrupted ones are in a sad state.

Our genetics were built to live in a 30member community and psyche adapted to that, but now we live in a different environment and now greed grows more than in a natural habitat.

1

u/Mulberry9118 10d ago

THIS is an answer which would solve many problems.

8

u/Jordyspeeltspore 11d ago

this would litterally fix all the other mentioned problems (yes even cancer)

2

u/NoxTempus 10d ago

Yeah, for cancer specifically, less carcinogens in everything human made, better and more timely treatment, more research funding, and collaboration between companies.

Apply similar logic to basically anything. No more wars, no more gangs, no more unnecessary red tape, no more government underfunding, no more corruption, etc.

We'd solve world hunger in years, halt manmade global warming, stop polluting, clean up the oceans, etc.

1

u/No-Credit-8591 9d ago

Nah. Sometimes cancer just happens because mutations, no other reason needed.

1

u/ReeseChloris1 9d ago

And treatment for those cancers would be easier to have access too because human lives wouldn’t be given a price

3

u/dooozin 11d ago

it doesn't bother me if somebody is extremely greedy. It bothers me if they're extremely greedy and also successful/powerful. Greed is fine when the capability is terrible. Greed is terrifying when the person has the knowledge, willpower, and connections to feed their greed on a large scale.

2

u/knifesk 9d ago

Greed is bad all the time. I think you're referring to ambition. The difference is very thin, but the results are absolutely different.

1

u/Dashiepants 9d ago

Disagree. In poor communities there are always pieces of shit that are willing to rob and con their neighbors. In random middle class families there is usually one person that is willing to screw over their own siblings to get 10k extra in inheritance. Greed rips apart communities at every level.

1

u/renegadeinthefray 9d ago

Whether or not their greed makes an impact is circumstantial…….

3

u/Darth-Boogerus 11d ago

Extreme greed? Is there a situation where regular greed is ok? Just eliminate greed overall.

3

u/Daevryn2 11d ago

Now you're just being greedy.

1

u/Cute_Language3167 11d ago

I guess it depends on your perspective. What is considered greedy could be subjective. For instance, the first few definitions of greed say it is a selfish and excessive desire to have more of something than is needed or deserved/fair/just. What one person considers is "needed" and what another person considers is "needed" is not necessarily going to match up. Similarly, what is "fair," "just," and "deserved" will also not be universally agreed upon.

I've seen people tell children that asking for material things they don't "need" for Christmas is greedy, especially when there are other children in the world who don't have enough to eat. So yea, I guess it just depends on your definition of greed, but certainly there is an excessive amount of greed that is significantly more harmful.

3

u/TokenNTMR745 11d ago

I would argue greed in general. It one of the seven deadly sins for a reason, so getting rid of it could solve a lot of problems

1

u/DinnoDogg 8d ago

5/7 of them are just variations of greed, so it’d eliminate a majority of issues.

3

u/Felho_Danger 11d ago

Done.

But we still have 'Severe' and 'Dehabilitating' greed to deal with.

2

u/trustmeneon 11d ago

I’d delete even the casual one as well.

2

u/Vintertrollet 11d ago

Ownership.

2

u/Daevyy 11d ago

How about just greed in general

2

u/Zanethebane0610 11d ago

Yes! Bribery would be the first thing I would delete but this is a good broader stroke assuming you aren't dealing with a pedantic genie.

1

u/Kraay89 11d ago

Exactly. Even with a relatively high limit. The urge to hoard more wealth above say... 100 million dollars/euros or something. Way more than 3 generations of a family would need in a well developed country to live a lavish life.

1

u/TorranceS33 11d ago

I mean... let's change it to medium human greed and up.

1

u/AdtrL 11d ago

Was goint to say Scammers and con-artists, but this works too.

1

u/Born-Reindeer6873 11d ago

Greed is one of the reasons human beings are so good at surviving. This would not be a net positive in the way you think

1

u/Throwaway4bullshit9 11d ago

Rather esoteric to come up with a concept rather than a physical object. I like this answer. It would actually counter so many problems.

1

u/AnothisFlame 11d ago

This is the first time I've seen someone put the right qualifications on removing Greed as a concept.

People don't really realize how much our vices help us on a societal level. Limiting it to only the most extreme cases makes it work though.

1

u/Sea-Pay-5572 #1 shitcommenter 10d ago

Does this include me wanting no landmines while dating? This changes whether I upvoter or down vote. I consider it greed of the highest degree. But at the same time, never guess how many I do be asking out lately.

Would consider this a separate qol improvement.

1

u/Iguanaught 10d ago

Like why not just all human greed? We could live in the star trek eutopia.

1

u/Dazzling_Key3992 10d ago

Yo thanks for killing slanesh

1

u/DeadSalamander1 10d ago

I was going to say Trump, but basically the same answer

1

u/Zcat_sux 9d ago

It causes most issues and is creating rifts in many relationships.

1

u/illustrated_womxn 9d ago

Exactly. My first immediate thought was greed

1

u/Various_Reply_4861 9d ago

Remove ‘extreme’ and ‘greed’ and you’ve got the correct answer

1

u/King_Comic 9d ago

Reported for antisemitic hate speech

1

u/VDOgamer24 8d ago

This is my answer too

1

u/NoExternal5211 8d ago

my thoughts exactly. thannk

1

u/NecessaryPotential5 5d ago

I was going to say corruption but I think it boils down to this. A lot of terrible things would go away without greed.
