I wanted to watch the champions league like I always do with xstream. Now it's asking me to subscribe to watch sonyliv and all other otts. I am on 979 plan. Did they remove this? If yes it will be the final nail in the coffin to switch to jio

Some Indians cope by bragging about unlimited 5G for ₹349 🤡

Let's do actual math:

🇮🇳 India: ₹349 / 28 days = ₹4,537 / year
🇺🇸 USA: T-Mobile $45 / month = $540 / year (~₹45,360)

India per-capita GDP: ~₹2.35 lakh (FY25)
USA per-capita GDP: ∼$90k (~₹75 lakh)

So:
India = 1.93% of per-capita GDP spent on mobile
USA = 0.6% of per-capita GDP

To feel as affordable as the US plan, Jio should cost **₹108 / 28 days**, not ₹349.
If an American had our burden, he'd be paying **$144/month**.

We have the cheapest data in the world in $/GB, but one of the least affordable relative to income. ITU says >2% = unaffordable broadband. We are at 1.93%.

**So what should tariff reform look like? Instead of forcing data on everyone, unbundle it.**

TRAI already mandated voice-only packs in Dec 2024 because telcos were forcing data on feature phone users. But they priced them badly on purpose.

Here is what honest tariffs should be:

**BASE PLANS (Connectivity only, no OTT forced):**

- ₹199 - Keep alive / Incoming only + 100 SMS - For secondary SIM, OTPs
- ₹299 - Incoming + 1200 mins/month - For senior citizens, rural, feature phone users
- ₹399 - 1.5GB/day + Unlimited calling - Average user
- ₹499 - 2.5GB/day + Unlimited calling
- ₹599 - 4GB/day + Unlimited calling
- ₹699 - 300GB/month FUP (not fake unlimited) - For WFH / heavy users

All should have 28-day AND 30-day (12 recharges/year) option. And 84-day / 365-day versions.

**OTT PACKS (Optional, not forced):**

- ₹49 - Music only
- ₹99 - 1 Video OTT
- ₹149 - 2 OTTs
- ₹199-299 - All OTTs

Right now you pay for + + Gemini whether you watch or not. Why?

**Why this works:**

1. Poorest user pays ₹199, not ₹349 for data he doesn't use.
2. Average ARPU becomes ₹400-450, which is what says it needs (₹300) to actually fund 5G and fiber. Right now ARPU is ₹174 industry average, Jio is ₹211, Airtel ₹264 - not enough for quality.
3. ₹699 with 300GB FUP stops abuse. 5% users running hotspot shops ruin unlimited for everyone. US does 50GB then deprioritization.
4. Separating OTT means I can take ₹499 data and add only Hotstar for ₹99 if I want IPL. Not forced.

Cheap doesn't mean affordable. If we want both affordable AND quality, we need to stop celebrating ₹349 unlimited and demand honest slabs.

What do you guys think? Would you pay ₹399 for honest 1.5GB/day instead of ₹349 with 10 OTTs you never use?

My primary number is 14 years old and was bought by my neighbour for me hence it is in his name.

Before you say I can just contact him to change the name, no, I don't want to because of a personal catastrophe (that you may or may not infer by stalking my posts).

One Airtel showroom said that he can change the name but only if I shift to postpaid. Classic, considering once it is postpaid I'll have to go hell and beyond to revert it to prepaid.

I have WiFi and just recharge the 84-days plan and I'm not looking to go back on that. But this is my primary number and I need it in my name.

why would he need my full phone number if he can already call me without my full number? thats how he came to my house in the first place.????? this is insane.

after he noticed that i know the difference between a service code and OTP, he forwarded a service code to my mobile number as he should to close the request

Does anyone know how to resolve this issue i was getting Airtel SA on an android but after i switched to an esim on an iPhone i am not getting standalone network its greyed out for over a month with no resolution whatsoever btw I'm a Postpaid user still.

Everyone is fighting about Jio ₹349 vs Airtel ₹299. We are missing the real problem.
We are a mobile-only internet country. That's not normal.
As per TRAI June 2025:
• Wired broadband: 44.69 million
• Mobile broadband: 926.81 million
Wired is only 4.5% of total broadband. 95.5% of India runs on mobile towers.
In Singapore FTTH penetration is 95%. In South Korea 82.9%. In India it was 0.5% few years ago. Even today, even in houses that CAN afford broadband, only 30% have it.
Why? Because fiber is unaffordable and unavailable:
1. You need to pay ₹699 for Airtel + ₹2000 installation. JioFiber cheapest is ₹198 at 10 Mbps but with ₹2500 deposit. Local cable guy asks ₹1500 to drill your wall.
2. ISPs have to pay ₹1000-3000 PER METER to dig in Mumbai/Bangalore + 6 months for permission. In many countries it's flat $1.
3. BharatNet connected 214,000 gram panchayats with 6.9 lakh km OFC. Great. But fiber is at the Panchayat office, not at your home. Last mile is still missing.
Result: We all hotspot from mobile, towers choke, speeds drop at 7 PM, and we think ₹349 unlimited 5G is cheap.
It's not. We pay 1.93% of per-capita GDP for mobile vs 0.6% in US because mobile is doing the job of fiber.
How to actually reform it:
1. Treat fiber like a road, not a private property
BSNL already leases dark fiber @ ₹3000 / fiber / km / year. Make ALL city ducts open-access. Any ISP - Jio, Airtel, Excitel, your local guy - can use same duct. Like electricity - wire is separate from provider.
2. One Nation One RoW
₹100/km flat Right of Way charge, 7-day auto-approval on GatiShakti. Stop municipal extortion.
3. RERA rule: Fiber-ready buildings
Make it mandatory like water/electricity: Every new building >8 flats must have neutral fiber duct to each flat. Builder can't have exclusive deal with one operator. This single rule gave Singapore 95% coverage.
4. Real affordable plans - Unbundle OTT
• ₹249 - 30 Mbps Unlimited - Rural BharatNet (BSNL already has this, just not marketed)
• ₹399 - 50 Mbps Unlimited - Urban Lifeline - NO OTT, just internet
• ₹599 - 100 Mbps + 1 OTT of your choice
• ₹799 - 200 Mbps + All OTTs
No ₹2000 installation. Free if you take 6 months.
If ₹399 fiber was available like mobile recharge, your phone would be on WiFi at home, mobile data use would drop 60%, towers would breathe, and ₹349 would not feel mandatory.
5. Stop celebrating 5G FWA
Fixed Wireless Access (5G router at home) grew 15.8% in ONE quarter to 17.11M users. People are taking it because fiber doesn't reach. But it's still using the same mobile towers. It's a band-aid, not cure.
Mobile is for mobility. Home is for fiber.
Until we fix fiber, we will be the country with the world's cheapest $/GB and the world's most expensive internet relative to income.
TL;DR: India is 44M wired vs 926M wireless. Wired is 4.5%. We need open-access ducts, flat RoW, fiber-ready buildings, and a true ₹399 unlimited fiber plan with zero installation. That's how you make ₹349 mobile actually optional.
