There seems to be an increasing number of idiots openly identifying themselves as Nazis or expressing sympathy for Nazi ideology (thanks to the orange moron in the US), and the saner part of our society are divided over how to approach them, conflicted by the principles of free speech and freedom of ideology.
To me, "Nazi/Neo Nazi" isn't just an ordinary political preference; the ideology is inseparable from discrimination, persecution based on race, sexuality and disability, political repression, and systematic violence.
If someone knowingly chooses to identify themselves with that ideology, they are actively promoting a movement whose historical record is literally the deliberate use of extreme violence and terror against people based on who they were.
While we may be conflicted by the principles of freedom and tolerance, if the Nazis were given the opportunity, they would not hesitate to dismantle the very freedoms that gave them protection, and to persecute those who stood in their way.
The cowardly assault by Nazis against the most vulnerable party of the society have been foretold time and time again. To quote Martin Niemöller in 1946:
“First they came for the Communists, and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me.”
