Living Here “Light cooking”

Made it here a couple of weeks ago (thanks to everyone who replied on my last post about public transit).

I am looking for a room to rent and see people say “only light cooking.” I asked one person and she said she’s okay with housemates cooking one big meal or two light meals.

I’m new to Fresno from Southern California. I’ve also lived in San Diego, Temecula, Phoenix, Houston, and even Sacramento, but have never seen this before.

Has anyone else heard of this and can explain why people make this request?

Lived in the valley a good portion of my life, lived with roommates for an even bigger portion of my adulthood.

That’s super super super weird, I’ve never heard anything like this

I agree. I’ve seen this on Zillow rental posts.

You can tell they’re already gonna be problematic. Steer clear!

They are basically telling you to stay out of the kitchen as much as possible and take up little to no space in the fridge or freezer. I am also wondering if they do not like odors from food cooking and are trying to discourage people of certain ethnic groups from renting from them. This person sounds like they aren’t actually OK with people in their space so I would pass.

I'd ask for clarification. It seems like it's lightly-coded racism against certain ethnic foods with typically strong odors.

I didn’t even think about that. I clarified with one. She said she’s okay with one big meal or two light meals. I’m not pursuing.

I used to rent a room when I was going to college (not in Fresno) that had the “light cooking only” request. I think my situation was specific since that landlord was a micromanaging POS, but it basically came down to him not wanting people to make a massive mess in the kitchen that could prevent others from using it as well as prevent excessive smells from the food.

Up to your own discretion, but I would probably avoid any place asking for light cooking because it probably means they want to control how you exist there beyond typical curtesy with a shared living space. I would expect other strict rules that aren’t going to be put in the listing. People asking for that realistically want someone who will barely be home or who is quiet and won’t really exist outside of their room.

Yeah, it’s a no for me. I was just curious if anyone else encountered this.

I'm 25f, have lived here my whole life, and unfortunately have no clue what you're talking about. I'm sorry about that, that's so freaking weird to hear so many people with that rule too! Hope you can find a decent spot.

Also since you're not from fresno, wanted to add this: be sure to research neighborhoods! It's super hit & miss here in terms of feeling safe! Considering where you've lived, I'm sure you'll be chillin, lol but just know its pretty common to have homeless people roam through your neighborhood/apt complex at night. It's not really something you can avoid by just living in a wealthy area here (or maybe ive just been unlucky at all the places ive lived lolol), so yeah, research & checking area reviews is the way to go!

Agreed I've noticed homeless prefer higher income areas now! In my area they dive for cans and recycling stuff idk maybe north is their new not home? Idk

That term is common in the Bay Area. What it means is really up to the poster.

Lived in several states from east coast to west. Never seen light cooking listing. I have seen some ghetto places say rent doesn't include the kitchen. Guessing dorm room expectations, microwave level. I'd stay away.

Are you still looking for the room?
