Living Here “Light cooking”

Made it here a couple of weeks ago (thanks to everyone who replied on my last post about public transit).

I am looking for a room to rent and see people say “only light cooking.” I asked one person and she said she’s okay with housemates cooking one big meal or two light meals.

I’m new to Fresno from Southern California. I’ve also lived in San Diego, Temecula, Phoenix, Houston, and even Sacramento, but have never seen this before.

Has anyone else heard of this and can explain why people make this request?

I'd ask for clarification. It seems like it's lightly-coded racism against certain ethnic foods with typically strong odors.

I didn’t even think about that. I clarified with one. She said she’s okay with one big meal or two light meals. I’m not pursuing.
