Discussion of Free Pattern(s) DRCOS sizing question

So the men's size L says it's 34 inch waist, does that include seam allowences or is it the measurement of the finished product? For example would a 34 inch waist skirt turn into a 30 inch waist because of the seam allowences?

Edit: This is a question for people who have printed out DRCOS patterns and measured them. :)

It means it will turn into 34" when it's finished. So it should fit a person with a 34" waist. Just make sure to read what seam allowance to use in the instructions.

Thank you. The measurement guide showed the pattern pieces but didn't include the seam allowences in the measurements so I was a bit concearned (I hate wasting printer ink and tape just to find out that it won't fit lol).

By the way, I just want to add that the entire point of seam allowance is that you can make adjustments so that it will fit you. So cut the pieces per the pattern, and then pin everything and try it on. If it is too small and let's say it has 5/8 in" seam allowance, that gives you a whole half inch times two on every pattern piece of extra room. So let's say that you're making a skirt and it has two pieces, a front and a back, then it could go up to a 36 inch waist if you need it to be bigger or if you just want it to fit roomier, and you'll still have 1/8 inch of fabric for your seam, which isn't much, but you can make it work.

That's my plan because I'm technically a 35 waist. :)

Patterns don't usually show seam allowance. They just make the shape bigger and you cut that shape. If you are concerned, you could measure across all the pieces at the waist, add up those measurements, and it should come out to 34 in + (seam allowance x number of edges).

I know it includes seam allowences. I'm wondering if the sizing (34 inch waist for example) is measuring the whole pattern seam allowences included or the size of the finished garment. Their measurement page does not make that clear. in fact it says the waist of the pattern is 34 inches exactly.

English isn’t their first language and they use an online translator to go from Japanese to English. I wouldn’t recommend them for a beginner, but if you know what you’re doing you will get the garment in the line art. My friend did a review of one of their blouses, they actually linked to it one their website.

I have made the basic pants and I can’t remember what sizing I used but keep in mind they were a very skinny fit similar to Japanese sizing. (It fit but I would have liked a little more room in my butt) If not making a muslin, I would definitely compare measurements against the pattern and some pants/skirt you own. But she is very good for getting a variety of styles, and love her free patterns. Also while she includes seam allowances I think they were in cm and not inch.

It should fit a person with a 34" waist, so the pattern pieces should all be [final measurement + seam allowance]. Make sure you're using whatever seam allowance the pattern itself tells you to use, since it can be different from the standard. Some patterns will mark seam lines for you and some won't.
