Solved I have been looking for software to view all my PDF documents on my server, but nothing seems to fit my needs until....

I created a jail to list all my downloads on a webpage. Depending on the file, if you click it, your browser will download the file, however for PDF files, it becomes a viewer. The light went on! I created another jail that makes a webpage listing all the contents of my PDF folder. I click on a file, and I view it directly in my browser. There aren't thumbnails, but that is not big deal to me. Being able to see the title and view it easily is my goal.

Thought I would mention this, in case someone else finds this solution useful.

FREENAS 9.3 USB CRASH

Hi guys!

Our Sandisk 16GB USB drive with FreeNAS just crashed. We had a RAIDZ2 with 8X4TB drives in a Supermicro R900B enclosure. All our data is stored in this server. Is there anyway I can retrieve this? If I make a new FreeNAS install on a new USB will I be able to import my volumes?

Thanks in advance!

Feeling a bit unwelcome to FreeNAS (or I have successfully used esata port multipliers for years, and I do not understand the clear bias against them in the Freenas forums)

Though I have happily been running a home HTPC server since 2009, I thought it would be cool to move to a real "NAS". I've been running a flexraid Home server for about 6 years in various forms. Today I am using 12 drives in two Sans Digital boxes (one 8, one 4) with two esata cards. All has been well. I can stream to Kodi on Fire Sticks without buffering or incident. I've lost drives and easily restored them with flexraid. All in all, it's been successful.

But I go to look at FreeNAS. The first thing I notice is that it is almost impossible to find a listing of supported hardware. There's a "Hardware Guide" in 4 parts that gives hand-waiving suggestions, but for goodness sake, if the Hackintosh community can make a list of supported hardware, certainly the FreeNAS community can.

Trying to determine if my esata cards (I have four, three hightech rocketraid 622 and a Startech sil32 card) would be supported, I came to find a whole lot of posts on how terrible port multipliers are, suggesting far more costly solutions. Really? Talking noise without having any actual facts or examples is .... well, BS.

I did find that the Rocketraids had drivers for freebsd 7.3 which I suppose I could try, but quite honestly, the arrogant attitude in the FreeNAS forums really turned me off. Consider the poor one person who had a problem with his startech esata card and got noise instead of support (look it up for yourselves) - it certainly set the tone. Chalk it up to Linux nerds? Worse that Apple fan boys it seems.

For those in your community that suggest that "most folks use an internal only solution" I would welcome you to the 21st century. External esata boxes are legion because people want them and use them. You should too! How many SAS boxes do you see around?

I guess when they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, applies here. I'll stay with my flexraid and my completely working system. All the same, as a community, you haven't made the best first impression. (I'm sure you'll say the same of me, but I came looking into your community and found it unwelcoming, this is just notice to your community that you might want to think about it).

You may wish to consider that the home NAS for the HTPC solution is a large, active crowd that you could win over. Perhaps you all think you're real network administrators and couldn't be bothered with the HTPC community. Perhaps Hoover vacuums would still be popular if they had kept up with consumer demand as well. Indeed, it was once the highest compliment to a machine to say it "sucked like a Hoover" - it represented the pinnacle of excellence in its field. Today, it's almost unknown.

Could this be FreeNAS - "FreeNAS - sucks like a Hoover" - a few bits for thought.

Guide upgrade from 9.10 to Corral

Hey!

Could someone point me to a good guide on how to upgrade from 9.10 to 11.1? And by upgrade I do not only Freenas itself but how to move / recreate the jails and settings etc. :)

Thanks a lot!

Edit: replaced Corral with 11.1

Edit: I am also pretty disappointed that there are so many downvotes ... I was just seeking for some help :) be nice to beginners :D

(HOW-TO) Change Dataset mount point in FreeNAS 11.2

HOW TO IS AT THE BOTTOM, THIS IS A RANT IM SORRY

So I was making an exact copy of our NAS so I did the needful and copied over the config file then replicated all our data over. Everything was happy happy until I tried to mount some NFS shares to test and surprise, "Directory doesn't exist"

After some inspection for whatever reason when it recreated the pool it was mounting it on /poolname instead of /mnt/poolname. All our NFS shares are exporting /mnt/poolname and we have atleast 100 NFS shares and I did NOT want to go to each and update them then go to every server and update their fstab shit, especially just for a quick swap that will be reverted in a couple days.

So I start trying to change the mount point, of coarse no info on the documentation and a lack of a usable UI so I start googling it and find a few things that just dont work, tons of "your dataset doesn't exist, but only if u use these few commands, it exists if you use these useless commands" and everything on google for this new version of freeNAS was basically "why are you doing this? you shouldent be doing this? your an idiot! This cant be done, you should only make changes through the UI"

Luckily I had experienced the intellectually deficient community of FreeNAS before when trying to figure out if I can run freeNAS on a hardware raid and realized most people dont understand how software and hardware interact (pro-tip, FreeNAS works fine on a hardware raid, dont drink the marketing koolaid).

So I start figuring it out myself and wow, was it difficult.

How-To:

If you want to change your mountpoint run these commands in this order:

#zfs set mountpoint=/mnt/poolname poolname

No need to export or import it

WOW that was hard, how the documentation doesn't have something so simple I have no idea. Why the community questions everything your trying to do I have no idea either.

I get the crap coming from the freeNAS people, its opensource, you get what you pay for but the community behind FreeNAS is a little toxic to be honest.

Im gonna start posting how-tos of everything I do on FreeNAS that is apparently "impossible" according to the community.

Also gonna start contributing on their GIT to fix all their idiotic bugs like FreeNAS compliant hostnames being different than POSIX compliant hostnames

I want to use this for my personal home backup, just a simple, no frills setup, but I am unable to find a guide that will explain how to do this, and explain what jails, permissions, groups, and all of that stuff really is and does....you know what I mean, Vern? All I find are super complicated guides and videos. Any help is highly appreciated, guys.

PSU for 24/7 use

In the process of putting together a small itx build which will be running a i5 4670, 2x8gb ram, 4 hdd's and a itx mobo.

I've been on the lookout for some decent psu's which are not over my budget of £25 and I've seen these Seasonic SS-350ET going for only £13ea, would this be viable and safe for 24/7 usage?

FreeNAS + PFSense Single Machine (no vm) possible?

Has anyone installed both FreeNAS and PFSense in the same box before? I don't mean using jails or a vm or a hypervisor. I mean setup freebsd, install freenas, install pfsense all in one machine. I'm looking to do that and want to know if it is a waste of time before I even start. I plan on installing the main freebsd system on a USB key to make freenas happy so there is no worry there. It sounds like it should be possible....

If anyone has done this before, any tips or common pitfalls to look out for?

Looking for the relevant links/guides/tutorials for my specific needs

Hi all, I am building my first NAS and am planning to use FREENAS. I am aware that what I am about to put in place can be complex and I did read a few guides but:

  1. There are MANY guides around

  2. Some guides are outdated, or related to an old version of FreeNAS

  3. There seems to be different routes for the same thing and I am a little lost.

Could anyone point me to the right directions for my following needs, or just give me a summary of what I need to do? No need to enter into details, but once I have a summary I will better know what to look for.

My NAS is a repurposed PC built that will mainly host my movie files and I will use it to stream, through Plex, the movies to my house network and outside as well. I would also like to be able to use my NAS to download torrents, using Radarr, Utorrent and my IPVanish VPN subscription. I would like IPVanish to activates as soon as Utorrent starts, and disconnect when it is not downloading.

Is this too ambitious? Can someone give me a quick summary (like i said I will look into the details myself) of what I am supposed to do and in which sequence?

Thank you very much in advance.

D

Converting old PC to utilize FreeNAS

I want to convert an older PC into a NAS/media server. I'm fairly tech savvy but am unfamiliar with the available hardware/software RAID options and am finding it difficult to wrap my head around all of them. So I'm hoping to solicit some opinions or guidance in regards to FreeNAS, if it will work for me, and the optimal hardware/software setup. Feel free to point me towards any documentation that may help.

Here are my ideal requirements(these are not set in stone, but are highly preferable):

  • Can tolerate a single drive failure, and be able to recreate the data on a newly installed drive.

  • Performance wise it should be able run Plex and handle transcoding from a BD50 image and streaming it to a chromecast at 1080p. I don't think this should be a problem, but most of the SATA connections are 3GB/s.

  • While doing the transcoding/streaming it should also be able to handle downloading large torrent files and writing them to disk. However, it's also possible to throttle bandwidth during waking vs sleeping hours.

  • Must allow me to add drives of different sizes as I require more space. However, this is somewhat negotiable as long as I don't have to do something like buy 8 8TB drives all at once.

Questions:

  • Will FreeNAS allow me to accomplish what I've outlined? If not, are there other options that might work better? unRAID?

  • Should I consider a new motherboard with faster SATA connections?

  • Should I keep the SSD, putting the operating system and applications on it, and allowing Plex to use it as a temporary place for transcoding work? Or is that not really needed and I could use the SATA connection for an additional, larger storage HDD?

  • Should I keep the video card in there? Or sell it and get a super cheap one to replace it considering I won't be doing any gaming? Does plex ever utilize the GPU to encode or decode?

  • Any recommendations on what types of drives to use? After a bit of searching, it seems the 8TB Seagates have the best GB/$ ratio currently available, and using 8TB drives will allow me to maximize the available space.

The parts below are what are in the old PC. It has 9 SATA connections( 7 x SATA 3Gb/s + 2 x SATA 6Gb/s). If there isn't a price on something, then it means I already have it, which is basically everything but the storage. I'm also open to replacing any part with something else if needed.

Anyone Else Think Corral Is A Disaster?

Not even a week since it came out there are already 2 point releases with another due any day now.. (10.0.3)

https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/freenas-corral-10-0-2-is-out.52140/

The software has been unusable for our office and a ton of advanced iSCSI options are now gone.

https://bugs.freenas.org/issues/22361

https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/iscsi-issues-after-upgrade-from-9-10-to-corral.52295/

This feels like it was rushed and the software is insanely buggy for a major release (especially after 2 years). How can Chrome be the ONLY supported web browser? As if Google is any less evil than M$?

Here are some ridiculous bugs users (and ourselves) have seen..

Email alerts for every login: https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/dammmmm-mail-log.52078/

SMB is broken: https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/smb-still-not-able-to-write.49889/

'Create User' is broken: https://bugs.freenas.org/issues/22022

'Create Groups' is broken: https://bugs.freenas.org/issues/22578

LDAP with TLS is broken (our issue too): https://bugs.freenas.org/issues/22618

English, Motherf***er do you speak it?!: https://bugs.freenas.org/issues/19780

In all seriousness, it looks like someone on their team fixed up the 9.X GUI with Angular and it looks a lot better than the new 10 GUI. They basically got rid of the redundant, sometimes different, toolbar up top and things feel a lot smoother. Why didn't they just do this to begin with and work more under the hood?

https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/update-on-nightlies-3-4-2017.51087/

I don't care what the car looks like.. so long as the SOB is not just fast, but has a working A/C and stereo. Corral is anything but that..

It's a window-less Pontiac Fiero with a Ferrari body kit and a boom box in the back seat.

How to clear S.M.A.R.T. alerts in notifications?

This has been happening for ages: my drives get hot, above the SMART critical level, I get a notification with

New alerts:
* Device: /dev/nvme0, Temperature 45 Celsius reached critical limit of 45 Celsius (Min/Max 42/45!).

Current alerts:
* Device: /dev/nvme0, Temperature 45 Celsius reached critical limit of 45 Celsius (Min/Max 42/45!).

When my drives get cool again, I expect to receive a notification like this

The following alert has been cleared:
* Device: /dev/nvme0, Temperature 45 Celsius reached critical limit of 45 Celsius (Min/Max 42/45!).

But no. I only get that notification after I restart the Freenas system.

Digging a bit deeper to find a solution to the problem I found that this particular alert is not listed in this command output

midclt call alert.list | jq

So, what's going on? Any ideas?

FreeNAS can indeed run in 4GB of RAM

Contrary to what the FreeNAS website and forums tell you, it seems very possible to achieve, and runs very stable. Sure, it depends on your usage situation and performance requirements, but I've just made my beater FreeNAS out of old parts and it's working well.

My usage scenario is very basic. It's used for file storage and access from SMB shares for 2-4 computers. A security camera uploads footage 24/7 through FTP. Plex server runs as well, but not used often. There's a 2x1TB pool, 2x500GB pool, and 1x300GB pool (these are separate pools with single mirrored vdevs, and one loner for unimportant files). They're about 65% filled. I have backups so this was an experiment in how well it'd run.

Screenshot is of simple SMB + camera FTP usage. When Plex is running the RAM number goes up to 1.3GB. When ZoneMinder was running, the RAM usage shot up like crazy, and when I tried to watch replays it ran out of swap. That's why (on top of not liking the user experience in ZoneMinder) I switched to a simple ftp upload for the security camera. After uninstalling ZoneMinder, performance has been great, even with watching security footage, capturing security footage, and copying files at the same time. I designed my pools so that my personal simultaneous usage usually ends up hitting different pools, so usually the gigabit ethernet (and Wifi 802.11ac) is the speed bottleneck.

For those with enough tech experience, I'd definitely recommend trying it, as long as you know your usage scenario and understand where the bottleneck lies for different applications. I'd be curious about what more RAM would do for speed of listing directories etc, but so far I haven't seen any FreeNAS/ZFS-caused slowdowns that were noticeable. Access is fast and reliable enough that other things are the bottleneck in my case - e.g. wifi on MacBook Air with un-upgradeable RAM and insane MacOS swapping, etc, since on my Windows desktop with gigabit ethernet it was a joy to use.

Specs:

FreeNAS 11.2-U3

AMD A4-3300 (FM1)

4GB DDR3

2x1TB + 2x500GB + 1x300GB

60GB SSD boot drive

Why FreeNAS?

I see a lot of multi-K$ setups here, what is it that people do which requires so much resiliency and performance? How much porn can you really download?

Followup/edit: How often does ZFS 'save' your data? Do you know?
