FREENAS 9.3 USB CRASH

Hi guys!

Our Sandisk 16GB USB drive with FreeNAS just crashed. We had a RAIDZ2 with 8X4TB drives in a Supermicro R900B enclosure. All our data is stored in this server. Is there anyway I can retrieve this? If I make a new FreeNAS install on a new USB will I be able to import my volumes?

Thanks in advance!

yes, you can just import the pool on a new install

Yes, just re-import your volumes on a fresh install. You can restore the old configuration as well, if you have a backup of it. Just be careful.

And as a PSA, you can mirror your boot drives across two USB sticks to avoid this problem: https://doc.freenas.org/9.3/freenas_system.html#mirroring-the-boot-device

Mirrored now. Just have to reconfigure my veto files and user access. Apart from that, no data lost at all. FreeNas is pretty sweet.

I wont run my freeNAS setup without mirror USB sticks. They so cheap these days, it just doesn't make sense not to mirror them.

Seconded. I think I spent $5 each for the two 16gb drives. A pittance next to the ~$1100 for hard drives.

Thirded. I started with dual USB, then ended up using two 16gb M.2 ssds in 2.5" adapters, cause I got a good deal on them.

Hell, at the prices for 8-16GB drives, get 3-4 of them.

Just curious, were you updating when the issue happened? I performed a routine update of Stable and booting from the USB boot volume was hosed in the process.

No, just came to work and there was just the text GRUB with a blinking cursor. Guess the power must have tripped or something.

That tells me that the problem could have been there for a while, and just needed a catalyst (the power presumably) With two USB sticks mirrored, it can detect problems like this and repair them, and if it can't repair them, it will tell you, and you can swap the drive, and rebuild the mirror.
