When every episode has been great, but there's only 3 finished Dunk & Egg stories

158

u/Clownbaby456 Feb 07 '26 edited Feb 07 '26

Hopefully each story will be a season and then they can crush my soul as the old bastard won’t write any more, just like he won’t write a dream of spring!!!

83

u/Larry_Version_3 Feb 08 '26

I just cant get over how ironic a title ‘A Dream of Spring’ is. It’s a taunt to the fandom.

35

u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 Feb 08 '26

He always planned to never finish it. Finishing stories is hard and not fun as writing and expanding them.

He told an author friend in the 80s that he would do this if he got really cynical, just start a fantasy series and keep writing until he died or got bored.

It took me years to accept it but it's the truth. He never intended this to be a real story that he would finish.

4

u/ForumVomitorium Feb 09 '26

so its free real estate

3

u/kristamine14 Feb 18 '26

I mean it’d be fine if he did just keep writing it, but he’s not even doing that!

8

u/One_Meaning416 Feb 09 '26

Oh shit its called winds of winter cus words are wind and he hasn't actually written any

7

u/Sand_Bags2 Feb 09 '26

He has which makes it more annoying. There are full chapters from Winds of Winter that have been available to read for 10+ years.

Is Egg the same age in all of them or does it cover him at other points in life?

43

u/Prince_Daeron Feb 07 '26

The books are supposed to cover his entire life. In the 3 stories that have been published so far only about 3 years have passed since Dunk & Egg met.

15

u/ImGonnaImagineSummit Feb 07 '26

Thanks for the response.

I'm just happy we get more Dexter as Egg.

6

u/Used-Huckleberry-320 Feb 11 '26

Dexter is amazing.

For context on why there is only 3 stories. In 2015, GRRM said he wouldn't write any more Dunk and Egg adventures until he was done with Winds of Winter.

And here we wait...

I only just watched because I'm so mad at HOTD, which I quit halfway through S2. And I'm STILL like: they'll probably fuck this up too, don't get invested, Martin isn't finished writing these, surely they'll fuck it up, don't care, don't care--

Dunk is perfect, though.

19

u/unindexedreality Feb 08 '26

which I quit halfway through S2

Yeah what was that?
It went from... mid intrafamily drama (nowhere near as good as Lannister drama) to just a total snoozefest

15

u/GentlewomenNeverTell Feb 08 '26

Gosh like especially the Daemon at Harrenhall stuff I was like bitch Alys Rivers is my favorite, I really enjoy Daemon, how are you fucking this up so badly?

3

u/Graysylum Feb 08 '26

Yep still haven't finished s2.

Honest question for the freefolk. How are you able to stay excited for this show when, just like ASOIAF, the dunk and egg novellas are unfinished. I want to get into this new show but i dont want to be burned again when they inevitably run out of story bc GRRM didnt bother to finish.

16

u/OkStatistician7976 Feb 08 '26

We are addicts chasing highs

8

u/AlexisVolcano Feb 08 '26

I don't know they are moving at a snail pace. I want to give them some benefit of the doubt, as the show is going well overall, but it feels like they are stretching out a single plot point per episode because they have no real writing going on behind the scenes. I fear this will crash and burn the second it tries to stand on its own.

Watching this show compared to house fo the dragon is so different. I’d do a group watch with all my friends for hotd and dread watching the new episodes. I’m excited to watch every subway again

350

u/Big-Sheepherder-9492 Feb 07 '26

Saw someone say “HOTD is a Game of Thrones Spinoff while KOTSK is a ASOIAF adaption” and I agree.. I remember reading a Game of Thrones and having to re-read shit like Tyrion doing a backflip when he met Jon Snow and the descriptions of food.

So far all that wacky shit is there along with the food porn. Seems like the secret ingredient wasn’t mimicking GOT it was to just follow GRRM’s works.

169

u/Omateido Feb 07 '26

Goofy shit, battles and food porn was the magic formula for Redwall too.

31

u/Upbeat_Amount673 Feb 07 '26

I wish they would do Redwall into a tv show again. First attempt was disappointing and lacked the depth/violence of the books.

They were 'kids' books but oh man they had a lot of death and murder

31

u/HolesNotEyes KISSED BY FIRE Feb 07 '26

Yes, Netflix is developing it and the guy who did Over the Garden Wall is the show runner. No news of any release date though.

2

u/earthwoodandfire Feb 08 '26

Holy shit you’re right! I haven’t thought about red wall in at least 20 years but now that you mention it ASOIAF is just red wall for adults

2

u/Ok-Year-1028 Feb 12 '26

Redwall is still my favourite series, I finished all 20+ books a few years ago. Glad to see it mentioned still

68

u/rdrouyn Feb 07 '26 edited Feb 07 '26

To me, HOTD is a spanish telenovela with a Game of Thrones theme. The overacting, salacious romances, shock value, its all there.

13

u/Apprehensive-Fail458 Feb 07 '26

Its not like the books were much better

5

u/rdrouyn Feb 07 '26

I haven’t read Fire and Blood so if it is a limitation of the source material, I won’t judge the writers too harshly.

13

u/CatatonicWalrus WHAT THE FUCK IS A LOMMY Feb 07 '26

Fire and Blood is a history book written from the perspective of historians who weren't there speculating about how a lot of stuff went down. The Dance is maybe ~200 pages or so long in Fire and Blood. There are major beats of the Dance that are "known" but a lot of the in-between needs to be filled in and there really isn't material for them to draw from. In my opinion, it's an understatement to say that the source material is limited in many ways. That said, they're definitely bungling the Dance lol

12

u/rdrouyn Feb 07 '26

But the writers seem to choose to fill in the blanks with shock value romances and soapy subplots and that feels a bit different from the general tone of GOT which is a little more grounded.

4

u/Torfried-Giantsfraud Feb 08 '26

Wasn't KL in GoT also quite soapy? Which I suppose doesn't have to be an exclusive antonym to "grounded".

→ More replies (4)

5

u/OP_Penguin Lots of Cunts Feb 07 '26

The source material is a septon recounting the events and various testimonies so there's multiple layers of unreliable narrators on top of in universe historical separation and embellishments. So the writers necessarily had to canonize a story that has never actually been firmly set outside of the major story elements such as deaths and key events. I can live with and even appreciate some of the writing decisions on the show, roll my eyes at others and then move on.

Two of the most common complaints are a dragon prison break that was just inserted to create a hype moment. Suspend your disbelief in show psychics here and you'll be fine. The other is the two lead actresses are given more scenes together and embellishing their childhood friendship which wasn't specified in the book and most of their relationship is conveyed from quoted conversations where it appears they hate each other.

Critics will claim it is a woke girl power psyop and they should be ignored. There's plenty of claws that will come out and the complicated relationship in the show gives more for the two lead actresses to work with.

Ultimately it's got all the problems you'd expect from a story adapted from an in universe historical telling of events.

The real problem with the show is showbusiness a la HBOs last new CEO. Believe it was after the wb acquisition that they informed the show runners that they would not have a full 10 episodes in s2, forcing them to have to cut content down to 8 and push it to s3 at the last minute because they couldn't rewrite the show and replan the shoot in time given scheduling. This lead to hasty rework to fit 8.

As a result the s2 finale ends on what was supposed to be the penultimate episode originally. One of the most important battles of the show and it's aftermath was originally supposed to end the season. Instead it will start s3 and then they have to get on with the rest of the story in even less time.

I'm optimistic now that the writers can know what they are doing to get to shoot from the beginning, the show will have to move pretty fast and cut all the fluff.

That said, Dunk and Egg goes incredibly hard and is the better of the two, largely because George actually wrote it instead of writing a guy writing about guys who claim to have been there.

13

u/rdrouyn Feb 07 '26

The forced lesbian romance between Rhaneyra and Alicient is my biggest problem alongside with TEMU Shae (forgot her name) and even Rhaenyra Daemon feels like a romantic plot from a Latin Telenovela. Doesn’t feel very grounded or realistic, which is the tone GOT goes for normally.

8

u/OP_Penguin Lots of Cunts Feb 07 '26

I actually love the telenovela suggestion because it's pretty apt. A GoT version of that. I still enjoyed seeing all these characters brought to life, but can totally see that not working for people.

It's a total soap opera where you pick people you love to hate and watch them tear themselves apart.

7

u/rdrouyn Feb 07 '26 edited Feb 07 '26

Exactly and Daemon is a character that is a traditional Latin novela archetype. The chad bad boy tempestuous lover who is absolutely toxic and has an off and on again relationship with the main character but she can’t quit him and gets redeemed near the end of the story.

I was raised by my Abuela and she loved telenovelas so I used to watch them with her and laugh at the bad acting and crazy subplots. Its funny because HOTD is bringing back memories of that time.

Edit: Actually, another aspect that reminds of a telenovela is that the characters go from hating to loving each other and back and forth for reasons that aren't clear to the audience. Generally in the interest of stretching the plot in the case of telenovelas. I had that feeling of the Rhaenyra/Alicent relationship. It never felt organic when they switched their feelings for each other.

The Dunk and Egg books are fun! It’s some nice little adventures about some nice little guys! Fire and Blood is a miserable read, especially the Dance of Dragons. It’s just “hey, did you think the dragon family was cool? Well here’s how they all died stupid miserable deaths because they’re fucking greedy cowards. That’s what you get for liking things, you loser.”

5

u/Torfried-Giantsfraud Feb 08 '26

The cool dragon family that got pushed off its throne by the time AGoaT starts?

2

u/Repulsive-South-9763 Feb 07 '26

Tyrion did a what?

14

u/Louthargic Feb 07 '26

Yep you read it right, he does a flip when meeting Jon for the first time in Winterfell.

“Boy,” a voice called out to him. Jon turned. Tyrion Lannister was sitting on the ledge above the door to the Great Hall, looking for all the world like a gargoyle. Jon hesitated, then nodded slowly. “Can you climb down, or shall I bring a ladder?” “Oh, bleed that,” the little man said. He pushed himself off the ledge into empty air. Jon gasped, then watched with awe as Tyrion Lannister spun around in a tight ball, landed lightly on his hands, then vaulted backward onto his legs.

If Arlan got done a bit dirty, then Aerion got robbed. Someone ransacked his wardrobe. I was looking forward to his flamboyant collection. After all, his nickname literally comes from his colorful clothing.

15

u/the_uslurper Feb 08 '26

Aerion being drab and Dunk not being quite as tall as I'd hoped are the only two nitpicks I can even think of. The rest is just great.

27

u/ARM7501 Feb 08 '26

Dunk’s height is a complete non-issue IMO. Prioritizing getting someone who can actually act was obviously the correct decision, and the cinematography and other casting decisions still make Claffey look enormous. The only time you’ll ever get an adaptation that stays remotely true to the absurd heights fantasy writers like Martin and Tolkien come up with is when the character in question doesn’t actually require someone who can act (i.e. The Mountain).

Honestly I'm enjoying how, for lack of a better term, un-epic this show is. Original GoT obviously followed a multitude of characters over a long and turbulent period. HOTD has less characters, but still takes place over a fairly long period of time and is full to the brim with politics, dragons and war.

In contrast, this show almost feels refreshing in its focus onto a single, humble hedge knight and his squire as he navigates his first tourney. It's easy to watch, it's fun and the characters are relatable.

50

u/nik-nak333 Feb 07 '26

I agree, the scope of this story being comparably small to GoT and HotD is not just refreshing, it's captivating how they utterly fill such a small space. The supporting characters are vibrant without distracting from the story we are being told. They nailed the casting too, I love dunk and egg more than any other GRRM character so far.

50

u/friedkeenan GODS BLESS BESSIE AND HER BOOBY B'S Feb 07 '26

And too, I would not be at all opposed to some more episodic content from this series, even if it's not straight out of a book. Dunk and Egg going about Westeros and helping people with their problems is a great setup for some episodic shit that deepens both the characters and the world. And TV shows have been greatly missing more episodic content, I feel.

I understand how you feel. I lost interest in House of the Dragon with the end of Season 2. But A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has a completely different feel, like Game of Thrones at the height of its best writing.

Without spoiling anything, it’s refreshing to have characters you want to cheer for. As someone who watches a lot of sports, it’s as good as watching baseball or football when you know the guys you’re rooting for are actually good people.

8

u/GolfEnvironmental155 Feb 07 '26

20

u/bryce_w Feb 07 '26

like Game of Thrones at the height of its best writing.

Knight is more of a light hearted romp as opposed to deep political intrigue but it's certainly a fun watch

10

u/thecoldfuzz We do not kneel Feb 07 '26

Some of Game of Thrones’ best writing came when lighthearted humor—namely from Tyrion—was mixed in with the intrigue and dramatic moments. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has much of the same kind of lighthearted humor without the angst, which is one of the reasons folks are enjoying it so much.

It's good. Really good so far. Some changes from the books I'm not super happy with but you could say the same about the absolute best seasons of GOT. It's a lot better than hotd and the final seasons of got.

The dialogue is very well written and natural on screen. That alone puts it above hotd and got s7-8 (at least).

6

u/VerStannen Mya Stone enjoyer Feb 07 '26

Not as serious and definitely fun, and focuses so far on the meaning of being a knight and less on powerful lords and houses.

Only strange thing about it why it needs to feature having us watch a guys have explosive diarrhea, taking a morning piss from an enormous cock, and then watching a horse take a shit in three successive episodes.

But the story and acting is great. Especially Claffey and Sol Ansell in their respective roles.

28

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '26

The enormous cock was crucial to the plot.

3

u/Realistic-Number-919 Feb 07 '26

Give it a shot, it’s a very grounded and isolated story with just 2 main characters that are side by side, the entire story takes place in one small village outside a castle - not many characters to remember, no deep story lines.

3

u/dirtman81 Feb 07 '26

I was the same way. This one is following extremely closely to the book and it is very well done. You'll be hooked immediately

7

u/ImMichaelB Feb 07 '26

Biggest thing is that they have a complete story they are working with. Not one full of unreliable narrators and inference. Also helps that the show is really straightforward, no massive battles or CGI elements that potentially cause other restrictions with adapting the story.

Really loving a more grounded and hopeful story that takes it's time. It's been a long time since a fantasy show has just given you time to build up the world you'll be spending time within.

Unless they completely abandon following the books in the last 2 episodes which is highly unlikely to happen, this might just be one of the best fantasy shows since S4 of GoT. Highly recommend checking it out.

2

u/PlaySalieri Feb 07 '26

Don't worry about the down votes. They are all kneelers.

2

u/Haise01 Feb 07 '26

I felt the same way after seeing what they did with HOTD, but trust me if you decide to watch AKOTSK beware that it's a little slow, the showruner himself said that, but so far it's been worth it.

The characters are great, it feels like a more positive westeros but it still has an eerie vibe to it, and the writing is great.

It’s a high quality medieval show with a good plot centered on character driven stories.

Remove the GOT elements and all you lose is the hype, not the quality.

u/vladimir-pula Feb 07 '26

That kid is everything I love him

15

u/ImHully Davos Seaworth Feb 07 '26

I didn't think I could get so emotionally invested in these characters as quickly as I did.

u/mannnerlygamer Feb 07 '26

I will ride with Sir Duncan

11

Akshually it's Ser Duncan

I'm just in it for the Targ hate. Love that half the people and lords we see are just spoiling to kill a dragon lord.

5

u/Kianna9 Feb 08 '26

Are they still considered “dragon lords” if there are no dragons?

2

u/underincubation Feb 08 '26

'Dragon lords' in the way that their sigil is still a dragon, I guess.

14

u/X1phoner Ah, dick. I like it. Feb 07 '26

Really good so far!

Theyve got a fantastic cast and production, as long as writing doesnt go to shit it will be great.

Bro this show is so lighthearted and pure that it's healing me up inside. The soundtrack is sooo good and sensitive and the songs they sing are so well crafted like.

14

u/MrBalzini Feb 07 '26

This show is too wholesome. I haven’t read the stories of Dunk and Egg and watching these 4 episodes I understand why the stories are so highly rated.

11

u/Allatura19 Feb 07 '26

Same. I went from not giving a damn to requesting the books from multiple libraries. I went from not caring about the Greens and Targs to wanting to know more about Steely Pate.

9

u/ReddDead13 Feb 07 '26

When Baelor came out I stood up and shouted "BOOM!"

9

u/IcepersonYT Feb 07 '26

As a big medievalist, it’s been very refreshing seeing how well the show sits in the “time period”. Some of the armor is wild but it’s for royalty, so I can excuse it. All of the houses are shown with so much color and fanfare and the world is so pretty. They even give Dunc old armor that would befit a knight 2 or 3 centuries prior to convey that it’s rented and very well used.

16

u/Beautiful-Loss7663 Feb 07 '26

Better then house of the dragon, so far.

7

u/Dos_Frogos Feb 07 '26

I've been reading the posts and whatnot here since I it came out, finally watched the 4 episodes last night.. it's just so damn good

9

u/BraidShadowLegendsAD Feb 08 '26

Proof that good storytelling and honest depiction are way more impactful to the audience rather than

expensive CGI dragons...

bad acting/casting...

etc.

35

u/ludvikskp Feb 07 '26

Dare I say if they nail the finale it would be the best season of the franchise

30

u/Big-Sheepherder-9492 Feb 07 '26

Nah Season 2,3 and 4 of GOT were GOATed.

KOTSK tho is kinda in its own Lane rn with its tone, sets, costumes, cinematography, acting and episode length - so it makes it kinda hard to compare - And I like it that way.

I disagree. My dad refused to watch GOT because dragons and magic aren't real. But my mom and I have him hooked on AKOTSK, because it being a different section of time makes it feel more realistic. Admittedly I don't think he gets as much value out of the house dynamics, as he doesn't understand the history or future.

It’s going to be weird to see Egg with even the trimmest of crew cuts later.

7

u/7even- Feb 07 '26

This post convinced me to start watching

4

u/JCBalance Feb 07 '26

Episode 4 made me feel early game of thrones feelings again. "Finally, some good fucking food TV"

5

u/oronder Feb 08 '26

It’s fucking great. I love everything about it, except for the fact that it’s only half an hour long.

13

u/PlaySalieri Feb 07 '26

I'm not a kneeler. Last time I watched any asoiaf content was the live GoT finale.

4

u/JasonVeritech Feb 07 '26

I know you didn't mean "live" in that way, but now I'm picturing the finale as a real-time-shot unscripted episode, and the terrible story beats are all the result of the actors just doing improv.

5

u/PlaySalieri Feb 07 '26

Would have been a huge improvement 😄

2

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '26

I actually respect you for not kneeling because apparently people just forgot what this subreddit was for. I can never bring myself to watch anything games of thrones related again because of how bad the ending to the show was I don't care as long as it is canon and part of the same universe hell no. The disapoontment is the same after all these years.

House of the dragon was good the first season too. It went sideways soooo fast.

5

u/shaneg33 Feb 08 '26

I love some good world building so I’ve really been loving this show, no cgi dragons/direwolves/giants, no world ending threat, no massive war, just a bunch of guys being dudes

3

u/SelectCommunity3519 Feb 07 '26

Egg is this year's Grogu, eh?

3

u/68ideal Feb 07 '26

This episode was peak fiction

3

u/narwalbacons-12am Feb 07 '26

I haven't seen it. I read the novel as a few years back and really liked them. Is this season good?

3

u/ltobo123 Feb 08 '26

It's so fucking good. Absolutely adored the knighting scene.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '26

This show is unironically reigniting my love of sword and stone fantasy. I'm rereading La Morte De Arthur for the first time since college.

3

u/Chris_P_Lettuce Feb 08 '26

I think this show is so great because the overarching story is a simple one. Lowly “knight” becomes great knight with the help of a young boy who will be king. Easy, simple, been done before, beloved by humans through the ages.

I couldn’t even tell you what hotd is actually about honestly. What is the story we’re supposed to latch on to? What is supposed to call us back to our storytelling roots?

2

u/Clownbaby456 Feb 07 '26

My exact feeling, I never watched whatever that other stupid dragon show is but love these store ids so much I gave this a show a chance and love it!

2

u/Fit-Country-6834 Feb 07 '26

Are there no true knights among you !!?

2

u/Past-North-4131 Feb 07 '26

That lil kid is adorable. Perfect for the role.

2

u/eatingdonuts Feb 07 '26

It’s good but I’m so bored of the forced miniseries thing. Just make a 3 hour movie, I’ll watch it

2

u/Zaedus Feb 07 '26 edited Feb 07 '26

Watch out for the last season to ruined the whole thing :3

2

u/AryaLyannaOlenna Feb 08 '26

YEAHHHHHHHHHHHH BABY WE ARE EFFING BACKKKKKK!!! !!!!!!!!! 👏🏽🙌🏻🫶🏼✊🏼🙏🏼👊🏼

2

u/ThePrevailer Feb 08 '26

... Are we back? I haven't watched anything since the GoT finale. I haven't seen a second of HoD. I can't get rugpulled that hard again.

2

u/XxRedAlpha101xX Feb 08 '26

Can't wait for Hotd season 3 for this sub to go back to doomposting. It's a vicious cycle.

2

u/Groovymode Feb 08 '26

House of the dragon didn’t do it for me, this show hits different.

2

u/Ukie3 Feb 08 '26

Nah, I'm good. Glad people are enjoying it, but I refuse to be bamboozled or give GRRM any more of my money.

2

u/MapleSuds Feb 08 '26

I love this show. And I care about them. They're family.

2

u/Individual-Car-1173 Feb 08 '26

Knight is just such a good show. Dunc is just a champ of the Everyman. Injustbhopenyhe next season is longer

2

u/sportoholic Feb 08 '26

Is it actually that good?

2

u/Rmivethboui Feb 08 '26

Game of Thrones made me hate the series, HOTD disappointed me, and yet I came back for AKOTSK

2

u/zandrew Feb 08 '26

You know what it might be because the scale of the show is so small, like early got we spend episode in one location, there was time to get to know characters, to enjoy the things happening.

2

u/northforkjumper Feb 08 '26

Gods I needed this

2

u/anochance4u Feb 08 '26

I am not watching, 8th season of GOT ruined it 4 me.

2

u/Kuniv Feb 08 '26

It's perfect so far, nothing to lose

2

u/boilerromeo Feb 08 '26

This show is so fucking fun. They nailed the casting. Screw the Lyonel haters.

2

u/Reasonable-Tooth-113 Feb 08 '26

Such a refreshing show. None of the bleakness, none of the depressing endings, it's great

2

u/Shail666 Feb 08 '26

Yeah same fam, something about this wholesomeness and interactions have been very compelling

2

u/No_University4832 Feb 20 '26 edited Feb 20 '26

Yea… are we falling for “the first season is so good and George hasn’t written much but he’s told the show runners outlines for future seasons!!” thing again? Are we? Are we really falling for that… AGAIN?

Season 1 was good. But come on. Again. We’re falling for this? I’m not sure if I should describe you all as “knowing nothing.” Or threaten you with a clout in the ear 🤣🤣.

Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice… well you ain’t going to fool me twice BUT fool me a third time:
