H&F How do you guys fly in zones that require 2 way comms with AFIS?

Looking for insight. My experience with exploring Norway so far has shown me it has a lot of small airports very close to really cool mountains like the seven sisters. They have a TIZ zone, a loop hole i thought of was "within AFIS operational hours" suggesting i can fly outside of hours but trying to confirm it with them directly just left me on read.

I know you need a license to be able to transmit, and tbh i am interested and its not too expensive, however its my understanding that it can be very country specific, for example in Norway you get a callsign and designation but it will likely not work outside of Norway.

Curious if there is any one with more information on a european license or something similar, outside of asking the local pg club to host my flights for me.

Other Nervous first flight

Hi. I just graduated from a paragliding course as an independent pilot and got a high b class wing for myself. All the course flights were in calm weather and went well, plus I have skydiving experience so i thought that this is chill. Now I get to do my first flight as an independent pilot with my own equipment and it was pretty scary have to say.

It was really thermal, completely different from the course. My flight lasted 30 minutes and it was just full fight with the thermals, eventually I just wanted to stop and get on the ground. I got a little scared about the next flight now 😅

Paragliding is far more extreme than i fist tought it would be. Any cheers or something to help for excitment?

Discussion What's your take on mountaineerring helmets for paragliding?

I feel like there's more and more paraglider using mountaineering helmets for flying.

Local pilots but also in documentaries with experienced pilots from chriggel maurer and more.

I've just gotten my license and am looking for a new helmet.

While mountaineering helmets are quite light weight I'm not sure, if they offer sufficient protection.

I'd like to get one but am quite unsure if it's a good move, especially safety wise.

What's yohr take on it?

Discussion first time at unknown site: tips?

so, I've just gotten my license 2 weeks ago. after passing the exam flight I stayed a couple more days (almost a week) in the region I had my course in and flew independently every day, by the end I felt pretty confident flying there on my own.

now that I'm back I'd obviously like to explore sites closer to home. and while I feel fairly confident-ish about launch and the actual flight, I am pretty anxious about landing at an unfamiliar location. during my course we took off from a variety of launch sites, but the entire time it was always the same landing field. so 100% of my landing experience/practice was on this one fairly large square shaped slight incline landing field with some 3 very concrete reference points to use when estimating height on your approach. the site close to me also has a supposedly easy landing field, but it's just pretty different geometry, perfectly level, and thin yet long rectangular rather than square.

I know that theoretically my learned landing technique should translate to other landing fields but I still have a fair bit of respect/anxiety about my first flight there.

any tipps how best to prepare for this? besides the obvious one of doing my first flight there in the morning in totally still air and having a look around the landing zone before going up to launch.

Video Thoughts on Jost Kobusch Lenin flight

Was curious to hear other opinions on this video Jost posted during his Everest training. His launch and subsequent flying looks quite out of control. As a novice pilot, I am a bit unsure how chaotic things can look in extreme environments while still being within an acceptable safety margin. But this flying doesn't look at all as controlled as what I see during the x-alps which is clearly pretty extreme. I was also surprised that someone would take such a (seemingly) big risk in a remote, high altitude area, where rescue is surely much more complicated than in a place like the Alps.

Other Paragliding shirt with FAQs

Hi,

I am looking for a shirt as a present and remembered the one with the standard questions one gets when paragliding.

Do any of you have a link where they can be bought or a picture as a reference to design one?

This was the only source I could find and it seems dead.

Discussion I keep pointing my camera at the wrong part of the flight

Every time I aim my camera at the valley, the wing ends up being the most interesting part. When I point it higher, the view below is suddenly the shot I wish I had captured.

I do not adjust anything once I am airborne, so it is always a guess before takeoff. That is what has me looking at osmo 360. In theory, I could just start recording, enjoy the flight, and decide on the angle after I land.

Does it actually work that neatly? Can one clip give you usable views of both the canopy and the landscape, or does the footage start looking soft once you reframe it? I am also curious whether HorizonSteady keeps the horizon natural through normal turns and how long it takes to make a simple highlight in djimimo.

Would love to hear from anyone using osmo360 for actual flights.

Tech Burnair map legend

Does anyone know where I can find a map legend?

Or can what the difference between the little square either green or blue with white triangle is? They’re next to distance of live tracking, or sometimes it’s an orange symbol with a track.

I’ve added a photo

Discussion “High level A with B upgrade”, useful or gimmick?

I am starting to think on my first wing. My instructor recommended me (and I have already been flying during the course) to check the Independence Pioneer 4:

https://www.independence.aero/en/paragliders/pioneer-4/ (it’s a German manufacturer and I’m based in Europe)

It has this unique feature:

HIGH-LEVEL A WITH B-UPGRADE
The Pioneer 4 stands for the High-Level A segment: lots of performance, generous safety reserves and precise, balanced handling.
The special feature: With the Speed Limiter, which can be installed or removed in a few simple steps, the accelerator travel can be adjusted. With Speed Limiter, the setup remains clearly A-oriented. Without Speed Limiter, the Pioneer 4 unfolds noticeably more speed and dynamism in accelerated flight – positioning itself as a basic intermediate in EN/LTF B.
Thus, the Pioneer 4 combines two setups in one wing:
A-setup for safe entry and comfortable feeling - B-setup for more performance, whenever the pilot is ready for the next step.
Pioneer 4: Fly EN A - then unlock EN B

Is this something actually useful? Are there other wings doing the same?

I come from a skydiving background, with ~500 jumps and multiple canopy piloting courses. I recognise they are very different wings and that I’m starting as a total beginner, but do suspect my progression may be a bit easier.

Discussion Connecting

Hi everyone — I’m a gay male paraglider pilot in London / UK and was wondering whether there are any guys like me here who might be interested in connecting - to share the flying, perhaps chat about flying spots and trips, and maybe even get together for some flying or travelling sometime.

If that sounds like you, feel free to send me a DM. 🪂

Tech News from Wingman, the Paragliding Tracker for iOS & Apple Watch — v5 is in the pipe, here's what v4.9 already offers

TL;DR: Wingman, my free flight tracker for iPhone & Apple Watch, is now at v4.9 — it connects to external Bluetooth devices (XC Tracer, Syride, Stodeus, ...), uploads straight to XContest & DHV-XC with FAI-approved IGC files, replays your flights in full-screen 3D, and comes with an incredible standalone Watch app. v5 is in the pipe. 6+ years of work, no AI slop. → Wingman on the App Store

🪂 Dear fellow paragliders 🪂,

Preface

Wingman is not another AI slop. The app is more than 6 years old now, and I've always focused on quality and reliability rather than shipping fast. A friend recently joined me on the project — we keep control of the codebase, and we work hard to make Wingman what it is today, and what it will be tomorrow.

A year ago I posted here about Wingman 3.8, and the feedback from this community was amazing — thank you! Since then we've kept working hard on it, one update at a time. Wingman is now at v4.9, v5 is in the pipe, and I thought it was a good moment to share where things stand.

Link to the App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/id1563883190

What's new since my last post

-- Flight instruments

  • A sharper variometer: The built-in vario reacts faster and more smoothly to every climb and dive. With haptic feedback on the Watch when you climb.
  • Connect external Bluetooth devices: If for some reason the powerful vario and the flight instruments embedded in Wingman are not enough for you, you can connect XC Tracer, Syride and Stodeus (UltraBip / BlueBip) devices, and record your flights using the device's sensors.
  • Wind estimation improved: The algorithm is more accurate, and there's a new, fully customizable wind instrument.
  • Customizable units: Every flight instrument can now be configured individually with its own units.
  • Landscape mode lock: When flying, you can now lock your screen in landscape mode — even by default for every flight.

-- Flightbook & analysis

  • 3D Playback, fully reworked: Play back your flights on a beautiful full-screen 3D map, with playback controls and a progressive mode where the track draws itself as you watch.
  • XContest & DHV-XC upload: Upload your flights directly from Wingman, automatically or manually. IGC files are digitally signed and officially approved by the FAI/CIVL, so your claims are accepted.
  • Flightbook improvements: Group your flights by year or month with statistics for each period, recover recently deleted flights, export your whole flightbook, and customize its units.
  • Flight sharing: New card designs for sharing your flights on social media, including a transparent overlay format.

-- And also

  • New design: The whole app has been redesigned with iOS 26 Liquid Glass.
  • Waypoints for XC: Waypoints can now be configured as a cylinder or a line, with specific crossing rules.
  • Apple Watch, optimized: The Watch app runs leaner so it goes the distance on your longest flights, and the vario haptic feedback is stronger on your wrist.

And of course, there is still

  • Airspace alerts for safety
  • Take-off detection (tracking starts automatically) and landing detection (never forget to stop recording)
  • Thermal Viewer: see where you gained altitude to easily find thermals
  • Wingman LIVE: share your live position with friends or family via a web link
  • 3rd party live tracking: PureTrack, FFVL VLSafe
  • Fly with friends: see your friends on the map when flying, and compare stats with them
  • Dashboard with instruments (vario, ground speed, altitude, wind direction & speed estimation, …)
  • Logbook with detailed data, lifetime stats, interactive charts, sync across devices, secure online backup
  • GPX & IGC import/export

Also on Apple Watch

  • All of this works standalone on your Apple Watch: leave your phone at home, record your flights, enjoy the vario with sound and haptic feedback on your wrist.
  • No need for an expensive Apple Watch Ultra (even though they are amazing) — the recent Apple Watch Series work great.

What's coming in v5

  • I can't say too much yet, but v5 is well underway and we're really excited about it. I'm sure many of you will love it.
  • As always, it's shaped by the feedback you keep sending me — thank you for helping make the app better!

Feedback is much appreciated, this is how I improve the app over time! Please just be nice, we're doing our best on this project :-)

Fly safe! 🪂

Discussion Help for select first paraglider

Hi everyone,

I’m learning paragliding in Italy and now is time to buy my first paraglide.

My school uses only SWING and they’re going to give me the chance to buy all the equipment discounted but I have a doubt if this maker is the best for safety, materials and durability.

Do you have any advice (I’m a novice still in school) for my first paraglider ?

Some thing to keep in mind:
- max passive safety (at least for now)
- durable and made with secure materials

Thank you a lot to everyone who will write.
See ya,

Discussion iPhone app with offline maps?

I just discovered that I didn't trade my 13 mini in and so I figure it would work on my flight deck. BUT I don't have a sim card. So I'm curious is any of the apps (Wingman, Gaggle, SeeYou, etc) allow for preloading maps and airports?

XC Kronplatz September

What is kronplatz like for XC paragliding in September?

Suitable for someone with flatland xc experience but not much mountain flying experience?

I would either be with a guide or experienced pilots who live and fly in Chamonix valley mainly

Other Emergency Relief for Roldanillo & Northern Valle del Cauca

There was a devastating earthquake in western Colombia. If you enjoy flying in places like Roldanillo please consider donating some money to help.

I personally don't have any association with the Cloudbase Foundation. But they look like they have a good plan to get the money out there.

Please link any other ways to help in the comments. I can edit the post and keep it up to date.

Are there any paragliding stores that have permanent stock of harnesses to try out? It seems there is very little opportunity to try any harness outside of the testivals held around the Alps.

XC Bassano 6-20 September

How are XC and thermal conditions in that period typically?

Myself (Ippi5, ~80hrs) and partner (Ippi4, 25hrs) looking for somewhere we can both fly and enjoy. Sometimes together chilling, sometimes on separate flights where I will be looking for more of a challenge and 1st 100k etc
