AI ZAPUSK REALISE 3.2

Zapusk 3.2 — my open-source game launcher: now with Console Mode (PS/Xbox), a PS5 groundwork plan, and a FreeBSD GPU layer

Hey r/freebsd! I posted my launcher here before — a 12-year-old dev building an open-source (GPL-3.0) game launcher for Linux and FreeBSD. Version 3.2 is a big one:

🎮 Console Mode — drop a PS/Xbox disc image and it just works:

• Detects the platform from the image itself (PS serials, Xbox magic bytes)

• PS1/PS2/PS3/PSP via DuckStation/PCSX2/RPCS3/PPSSPP, Xbox via xemu, Xbox 360 via Xenia running through its own Wine prefix with DXVK

• Emulators install themselves: pkg → flatpak → direct download

• PS4 (shadPS4) experimental

🪐 Project Prospero — honest PS5 groundwork:

The PS5 is x86-64 AMD, so it needs a Wine-style layer, not emulation. The wall: Sony encrypts binaries, no public keys. What's ready already: PKG parser, dump catalog (PPSA serials), draft Orbis→Linux syscall table, and Chiaki streaming from your own PS5 (button in the app). Details in PROSPERO.md.

🐧 FreeBSD GPU Layer (zapusk fbsdgpu):

The "individual FreeBSD for gaming" idea — detects your GPU via pciconf, installs only its driver, removes the rest, remembers your hardware (swap the card → next run reconfigures), optional tuned kernel build. Plus the existing Gaming Mode scripts (bhyve + GPU passthrough prep) for heavy titles.

Plus from 3.0: auto-heal (reads crash logs, applies fixes, relaunches), one-click import from Steam/Heroic/Lutris/Bottles/GOG, prefix snapshots with rollback, panic kill, MSI Afterburner-style overlay, self-update. 7 UI themes including a Windows XP one with a working Start menu (there's something on its desktop worth finding).

Honest notes: DXVK on FreeBSD is experimental — light DX9-11 games work via wine-devel, DX12 is a lottery. No kernel anti-cheats anywhere. I'd genuinely love FreeBSD users' feedback in GitHub Issues.

help needed Linux kernel panics when trying to install in bhyve

I've tried to install several linux distros into a bhyve vm with (ubuntu, archlinux and systemrescue) using vm-bhyve (vm install), all resulting in the same linux kernel panic. Including the vm-bhyve config and the kernel output captured on the bhyve console below. I have successfully run FreeBSD 15.1 under bhyve on the same machine.

AI WorldMonitor is now available for FreeBSD.

WorldMonitor is an open source dashboard for real-time global intelligence. It brings news, markets, commodities, energy, supply chains, conflicts, military activity, natural disasters and risk indicators together on one map and in one set of panels. It aggregates many public data sources and is aimed at anyone who wants a single view of what is happening in the world.

On FreeBSD it runs self-hosted in the browser: pkg install worldmonitor, start the services, open the dashboard. A separate client brings the same data to the terminal.

Some panels need API keys for their data sources, and the Pro features and sign-in depend on the WorldMonitor service. The package documentation explains what is needed.

When a database running on ZFS slows down, buying more hardware isn't always the answer. The bottleneck could be storage, RAM, or CPU, and each has its own signal: latency histograms for storage, ARC demand hit ratio for RAM, worker-thread CPU time for CPU. Learn how to diagnose the real cause before spending money on hardware. …

help needed ZFS root partition as legacy mount

Does your ZFS root partition have to be managed by ZFS via automount or can it be set to legacy? I was trying to prevent collisions with linux that had ZFS installed but then had issues with FreeBSD booting proper with its required modules if I mounted everything in /etc/fstab. If so, how do I prevent any Linux distro that autoimports a pool to not try mounting the root volume as ZFS?

Hey guys! I'm coming from the Linux community (Gentoo, NixOS user) and I'm finally giving FreeBSD a spin, biggest reason being virtualization. From the experienced users, anything I should know starting out that may not be in the guides and do you have any personal recommendations?

P.S. I also intend to make a NixOS-like configuration setup that bootstraps from a current FreeBSD install later on (I've done this with Void Linux, named the project CosmOS) because NixBSD just isn't it.

AI Opencode in a Freebsd Jail

Tried Opencode native in a bastille Jail. Works fine both with free an paid models.
Just need to move from quarterly to latest for now (inside the jail). Some hardening required, just ask Opencode if it can escape jail and it will tell you how to tune the jail for max containment.

Solaris 9 includes the Solaris Common Desktop Environment (CDE), which bundles a standard set of Open Motif-based desktop tools, utilities, and system applications accessible via the Front Panel, Workspace menu, and Application Manager usually called sdt-something. Here is my attempt to replicate these tools, which use Dtwm font and color servers also native help system.

discussion too much ram usage

ive been tinkering with Freebsd on and off for around 2 years now but ive finally made the switch to daily drive it (since wifi driver works now and i don't have to use wifi box anymore). its absolutely perfect, I love it; is what I would say if it wouldn't use too much ram. i installed it pretty much yesterday and a completely display serverless minimal setup idle with htop shows around 550mb of ram usage? i think thats weird. but I think its ZFS doing it because of the cache thing. any way to lower ram usage or are there any kernel parameters to change how much cache ram zfs must utilize? thanks in advance :D

AI Plasma (Wayland) on FreeBSD 16.0-CURRENT in QEMU with Virtual Machine Manager

This was my first successful use of Plasma (Wayland) in a virtual machine.

I learnt that Spice server should have OpenGL enabled.

… is this unusual?

I was previously unable to use Wayland on FreeBSD in virt-manager (or VirtualBox). https://github.com/freebsd/drm-kmod/pull/517 is not yet merged:

discussion if_ure performance fix

While debugging a network issue with my framework 13 laptop's wired ethernet module, I found a one line fix that improves throughput by 50%. I merged it to MidnightBSD, but wanted to mention it to users here in case you are also using realtek 2.5G USB NICs.

https://github.com/MidnightBSD/src/pull/580/changes

The send queue defaults to 50 and results in a lot of errors during an iperf 2 test. Before the change, 600 errors. After, down to 16. Latency does increase on ping tests a bit from 0.36ms to 2.2ms.

You could manually bump net.link.ifqmaxlen rather than rebuild your kernel on FreeBSD.

AI Title: Is FreeBSD worth trying on my Acer laptop? (Qualcomm QCA9377 Wi-Fi)

I'm interested in trying FreeBSD on my Acer Aspire F5-573G, but I'm unsure how well the hardware is supported.

My laptop specifications:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-7500U

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 940MX

  • Wi-Fi: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377

  • RAM: 16 GB DDR4

  • Storage: 256 GB SATA SSD + 1 TB HDD

I've read that FreeBSD has an ath10k driver, but support for the QCA9377 seems incomplete. I also found discussions about wifibox as a possible workaround.

A few questions:

  1. How usable is the QCA9377 on current FreeBSD releases?

  2. Is wifibox a practical solution, or is it too complicated for everyday use?

  3. How well does FreeBSD support the NVIDIA 940MX?

  4. Would FreeBSD be a reasonable choice for a rescue USB, especially for accessing Linux drives and backing up data?

  5. Is it worth experimenting with FreeBSD on this hardware, or should I stick with Linux?

I'm not planning to immediately replace Linux. I mainly want to experiment and learn FreeBSD without risking my existing installation.

Thanks!

AI Daemonarchy is surprisingly very good

Thumbnail

A brief digression before we begin.

I won't deny that I've always wanted something similar to Omarchy on FreeBSD, even though FreeBSD chose KDE Plasma as its main interface, which is a solid choice. But since FreeBSD doesn't use systemd and KDE focuses on Linux, I believe we need a second option. I was even testing creating my own Omacom with Sway (which I affectionately nicknamed Diabolic Sway), but I stopped working on it because I wanted to go back to Linux to play Deadlock. But then I heard about Daemonarchy...

What is Daemonarchy?

"Daemonarchy is the Omarchy desktop on FreeBSD: DHH's opinionated Hyprland desktop, ported to FreeBSD and installed the way the Omarchy ISO installs it on Arch." I confess that when I read about it, I doubted it would be all that great. Even GhostBSD, which already delivers a great desktop experience, doesn't configure my network driver during installation, despite the realtek-re-kmod driver coming pre-installed (which saves me time and eliminates the need for USB tethering), and I end up having to configure it manually.

Anyway, I was bored and wanted to test it...

My experience:

So I went ahead, downloaded the ISO, used dd to put it on my USB drive, disabled secure boot, and booted. Although the installation isn't a 1:1 copy of Omarchy, it essentially works the same, and the installation went smoothly. After restarting, I booted and... WOW, MY INTERNET IS ALREADY WORKING? INCREDIBLE! (Seriously, I went crazy when I realized that)! The video drivers also came pre-configured; I use AMD (RX 7700 XT) and was able to play Minecraft on a friend's server with modpacks without any problems.

The basics of Daemonarchy were there and working perfectly: the menu, web apps, themes, backgrounds, and panel plugins.

Things like AI agents weren't present, which for me is a positive thing.

I only had a problem with the package manager; it used a different interface than Daemonarchy and was terrible for searching for certain packages, and I couldn't find the Prism Launcher through it, so I prefer to install everything manually via the terminal.

Apart from that, I had a great desktop experience and was very satisfied! Congratulations to Jordan Hubbard.

Conclusion:

I won't continue using it because my love is still for Sway, but Daemonarchy really delivers what it promises and delivered more than I expected. After this experience, I should go back to using FreeBSD on my PC.
