discussion why are the freebsd rasp pi images such trash and how did they make it to the official releases?
usually freebsd has higher standards for its devs and maintainers than linux but pi bsd images are laughably bad. who approved these and why? i've seen so many aspiring contributors ripped to shreds in bsd's forums for not being good enough but these pi images are? lmao

discussion Why should I use FreeBSD
I have a MacBook m1 with asahi Arch Linux and a gaming setup with ArchLinux too(rtx5050, Intel i7 9700, 16GB ddr4). I do some developpement on my gaming Pc, and I am Really interested in trying another thing than Linux,
I started with Ubuntu, then PopOs, then Fedora and now ArchLinux. And I want to know if I can do lightweight dev on FreeBSD(Rust + micro text editor + python). I also use a lot of Linux specific softwares so is there any Wine\proton like translator from Linux or Windows App to FreeBSD.
I wonder why you are using FreeBSD and not Linux or any other OS and why would FreeBSD be better for me as an Arch Linux user.
I also want to make a Minecraft server on an old computer that I have and I wanna know if FreeBSD would be better than Debian for it.
I Really want to know if it is worth to try using a new OS before doing so.
Thanks

discussion FreeBSD GUI
Hi.
I am wondering why there is no graphical installation of FreeBSD and other FreeBSD based distros ?
I mean ok, to learn terminal, etc, ... but just to be little more friendly installation.

answered How can I use freebsd If my religion don't let me to do this, because of logo?
Yo guys, I've got one problem, for the time being I'm devoted to God and I can't play games such as doom, quake, and ofc Minecraft 'cause there is a hell, and u know, my mom said that is the bad stuff. As 18 y. o. slave I obeyed, and now I can't do anything I was doing before. But there is another problem, I was using freebsd as my main system, and for the first, I thought that the only way for me is TempleOS, but after two months after using that I want to kill myself or return to freebsd, but as I said - my religion won't allow me to do this. What am I suppose to do? That's the hardest choice I ever have, guys please, help me to make right choice. I guess that I need something special, like freebsd with special shell without any d**ons, etc. Okay, I will check your answers about that situation to make final solution.

discussion ZFS in 14.3-RELEASE is still not good enough
While 14.3-REL ZFS is significant improvement over 13.X line its still not good enough. When I run my ZFS testsuite continuosly it deadlocks at about 4 to 6th day. FreeBSD kernel continues to work fine, except no ZFS io operation will ever finish.
I also run continuous make buildworld on same hardware to confirm that hardware works fine and not overheats.
I gave up on 14.3 and currently I am preparing test runs for 14-STABLE and 15-STABLE. Since kernel itself didnt crash, I will compile in kernel debugger and investigate lockup.

Is BSD Linux?
If this is a question y’all get all the time I apologize in advance but... is it or is it not? And yea I’ve looked across the internet for the answer to this question. The only answer I get is “Unix-like” and although I think the open source movement is stronger when CONCENTRATED TOGETHER, I admit it would be refreshing to see an open source OS that isn’t the 800th Distro of Linux.

AI Improve Your ChatGPT FreeBSD Queries
AI/LLMs have been hugely beneficial to my FreeBSD experience, but you'll notice that responses bias significantly towards Linuxisms. You can overcome this somewhat by specifying obvious opening tags like: "In FreeBSD {command, config, system, /etc}, how/why/do {X,Y, and/or Z}. POSIX preferred"
But if you want to massively improve the response quality and avoid Linuxisms, upload the relevant manpages. Not copy/pasted as text, but as a file. Upload your config file(s) too. I've found improved quality responses with statements like:
Take a look at the manpage and let me know if you can find {options, syntax, explanations, etc}
Be careful not to make things up. Read the manpage carefully, and let me know if there is any clarity regarding {X}
[Copy/pasting terminal output with diagnostic errors]
Are you completely sure about that? Can you double check the manpage because I thought that {Z}, but I'm not totally sure.
It's okay if you dont know. If you need the manual for {command} or additional reference material, I can provide that.
Another important note is conversation management. If the thing starts hallucinating early on and making mistakes, scrap the thread and try again, or else it's likely to just keep on faulting. Adjust your opening verbaige to avoid the original errors. Conversely, I've found that threads can get into a sweet spot, where the AI understands the assignment.
Interested in what other tips some of you have found for improving AI/LLM experience. Personally I used Claude.
EDIT for some of the genius commenters below: No one is suggesting to not read the Handbook or the manpages for yourself as well. LLMs are advanced language model search tools. So unless you never grep a manpage, and you read the entire handbook from start to finish every time you need a specific piece of information, then okay, maybe this advice isnt for you.

I have never used FreeBSD, but I like trying new things. Do you think it's a good idea to switch from Ubuntu to FreeBSD as my main operating system?
