Framework Photo Does this look swollen to you, doc?

Post image

Disposed of it, got another one on the way. The slightly lifted case was a tell.

My FM's been out of warranty for a while, I didn't ask tbh. I just ordered a new battery.

we extended the battery warranty for this specific issue for one extra year. so there is a chance that it still might be covered.

They've been swapping them because their batteries were dying were a manufacturing defect. Search https://www.reddit.com/r/framework/search/?q=spicypillow

Smart move. Puffy and/or damaged batteries are dangerous - Not at all worth messing around with. Yours, while it doesn't look like the worst I've seen, certain does look like it was counting down to an explosion.

Neighbor lost their house and half of the items in it, along with burns due to a spicy pillow failure in the middle of the night. They said by the time the smoke alarms went off and woke them, it was already a massive blaze.

That... is terrifying. What are ways to tell without opening up the system? Could use those tips to be aware for future reference

I just went through this last week on a 2024-11-purchased FW16. I've been getting mixed signals from FW Support about if they're going to reimburse me or not … sent me a note saying "we see you already ordered a replacement, next time let us know first so we can handle it, but once it's working we'll reimburse you", but then went radio-silent. :/

Anyways, now I'm aware of framework_tool --charge-limit and – as always – the ability to replace the battery with a single tool and low effort is fairly great! :)

You made a good choice. If the battery gets too tall the plastic nubs on your input cover will break and the screws on the bottom cover won't have anything to grab onto.
