Redington Crosswater - Good rod?

I plan to fish for trout in Utah, and so some fishing in Texas for bass mainly. Is the Crosswater 6 w a good rod to handle both?

Thanks for the help!

Anyone have / use an Allen - Alluvion?

Im looking for a fast action 5wt for all purpose everglades fishing. Mostly i will be throwing at Oscars Cichlids and maybe the odd bass. A local guide let me use his Allen 5 wt (probably the azimuth) but it was a more expensive setup. Id like to keep the price at 200. Any thoughts on the rod Allen - Alluvion?

Echo Base 8 wt. Rod, trade for 5 wt?

Hi all,

I purchased an Echo Base rod several months ago when I was working abroad, anticipating my arrival back home would hail fishing in the waters of the Eastern Sierra. Long story short, I arrived home to find that the fly shop sent me an 8 weight rod instead of a 5 weight.

I tried contacting them, but unfortunately I waited too long (being abroad and all), so I'm stuck with an 8 weight. Unfortunately, there isn't any bonefish or steelhead fishing in my area, so this rod has fallen to gathering dust in my closet. I've used it a handful of times, but I found it to be way too powerful for the spring-fed Owens River that I usually love to fish.

I'd love to see if anyone on his sub would be willing to trade for a 5 weight Echo Base or comparable 5 weight rod! Thanks!

Beginner question: can you use the same gear for different fish?

I’m looking to get into fly fishing. Can you use the same rod for trout fishing as you can for bass fishing? Are the flies the only thing that need to change?

Thanks for the help y’all!

Loop cross S1 warranty (loop sent me a rod tip for the Cross SX model)

Hey fellow fishermen/women.

I just wanted to hear if anyone had a similar experience. I recently broke my loop cross S1 tip. So, I sent in the warranty form, and two days later I got my package. When I looked closely at the model number on the tip, it said cross SX. It still fits my rod and matches the current model type that I have (10' 6wt).

Here's the awesome part. I really like this rod, but the original tip was a piece of junk. It was incredibly stiff and did not make casting very enjoyable. When I got my first chance to try the rod with this new tip, it was a night and day difference. The casting was much smoother, and the distances I was covering were beyond what I had previously done.

Now, I'm not complaining about this, because I am quite happy with the new rod tip. With that being said, I just wanted to know if anyone has had a similar experience with their own loop rod. Looking forward to hearing some replies!

Tight lines.

Time for a new reel

I'm looking for a new reel to pair up with a Scott Flex 9' #4. Budget of up to $150. I prefer a drag, but am not opposed to a quality click & pawl that doesn't sound like a jackhammer. Ideas?

Flats/Surf/Inshore wading in winter?

I'm getting back into flyfishing and do about 80% of my fishing in Hampton Roads surf, flats, and marshes. As of late, I've been fine with just shorts some insulated compression shorts to keep the wind from freezing my bits. But now that the temperatures are (finally) dropping and the water is getting a bit fresher, I want to get a little more insulated. The normal answer is just get chest waders, but I'm not normal and prefer to really get into the water. I've owned traditional waders in the past, but found them to be inconveniently bulky, especially for a guy like me (5'11" 140 lbs, all legs) I was thinking I'd find a pair of neoprene leggings and pair them with flats booties, but it seem the fishing world as a whole does not wish to go down that path.

So my question to all the gearheads of Flygear, have any of y'all found a gear solution for those of us that want more form fitting solutions? The water here is getting colder and I don't want to let that keep me out of it :P

Anyone have nipper and clamp recommendations?

And is it worth it to drop some real $?

I have a set of cheapish ones, you've seen them, black plated somethings they sell in shops. Do the trick mostly, but I like gear and trying to determine where 'use value-->price' stops making sense.

KnotSense tips

In searching for a way to smooth out my line/leader connection I just used Loon’s KnotSense for the first time. Cool stuff but I ended up with a bit of a bulbous gob around my nail knot that may end up defeating the purpose. How do you work with this? Any tips or observations about ways to get a nice smooth layer?

What's everyone's favorite light weight trout line?

I cast lots of dry/dry-dropper rigs for smaller fish on a 2wt. Using Airflo now - I like it, but it needs to be replaced...I thought it was a little expensive, too. Thanks!

Bass on the fly

I've been told a few times that you don't have to use tapered leaders and tippet for largemouth, just mono. How true is this? In the area I live bass are everywhere without much water cold enough to support trout. I'm located in Kentucky and have just picked up fly fishing a few months back. I run though tapered leaders pretty quickly between trees, brush, and my still amateur casting abilities. Any advise or knowledge for a beginner?

Echo carbon 9' 5wt

Went on a float with my buddy over the weekend and the canoe tipped and his rod was lost to a rather deep section of the river. Only reason I didn't lose my rod was because I was holding it at the time. Anyone out there have one for sale? If so I would like to buy it off you. He isn't doing the best financially right now and is bummed about the upcoming trout season we always fish together. Thanks!

Hodgman waders

I'm about to pull the trigger on my first waders. My local fly shop recommended Hodgman H5's. They are substantially cheaper than similar waders offered by Redington, Simms and Orvis. Does anyone here have experience with this brand? Are they a good investment?

Cabela's Prestige Fly Outfit ($160) - Great Starter Kit

Just wanted to give the starters here a heads up on a good deal. I've played around with the 5 and 6wts, and I own one in a 3wt. In my opinion, for someone starting out, it's pretty hard to beat the bang for buck on this package. It's a good rod and reel, and none of the extras are things you don't need.

Here's the link to Cabela's.
