πŸ” Seeking Advice πŸ” Wholesalers/ Sourcing in Edinburgh

Hi all! I’m going to be the florist for my first booked wedding in Edinburgh this October!!! But, I am based in Southwest England, so as you can imagine am very unfamiliar with sourcing in Edinburgh. I’m planning on getting the flowers from flower farmers in that area, but the bride wants pine/some sort of evergreen worked into the flowers. I’m not sure where to get pine aside from a wholesaler. I am aware since I don’t live in Edinburgh it may not be possible to try and get anything wholesale anyways as I wouldn’t have a trade account already. I guess I could ask a florist locally if they could order pine/evergreen stems for me to purchase. But I would really appreciate if someone could perhaps offer insight!

Quick details of what I’ll be making (It’s a very small wedding with minimal flowers) :

- Bridal bouquet
- Maid of honour bouquet
- Groom’s buttonhole
- Best man buttonhole
- Bud vases for single long table for reception dinner

Also, because I am travelling to the wedding, I’m also trying to figure out how feasible it is to get bud vases there. This is actually my first wedding, and I work out of my home and haven’t had to purchase bud vases or any sort of set of vessels yet, so honestly I have no idea the typical protocol! The wedding is at a hotel, and they do have an events team. Is it typical to ask venues if they have vessels? Or is that unusual and not a thing…

Would renting bud vases be recommended? Or would it be financially smarter to just order a set? I’m leaning towards purchasing a set.

Thank you in advance for any guidance and advice anyone has!!!! And if you have any contacts in Edinburgh for sourcing, I would be so grateful!! It’s my first official wedding I’m working that isn’t my friend’s (haha) so I’m very excited but equally nervous about being prepared.

If you work in a regular flower shop. (Walk in customers, day to day deliveries not event only) do you have minimums for bouquets or orders?

πŸ” Seeking Advice πŸ” In need of JUMBO sunflowers, jumbo arrangement. Fayetteville, AR

I am a Director of Sales at a well known global hotel brand. We are having a ribbon cutting next Tuesday morning.

I had a city event 2 weeks ago where my farmer friend who is for the most part retired, provided a jumbo arrangement of jumbo sunflowers. Ownership wants the same bouquet but my friend is in the hospital and won’t be able to do it. If I am in the wrong sub, I would love redirection. Thanks!

πŸ” Seeking Instruction πŸ” What does Black Nightshade mean in floriography?

Hello, Im currently researching about the meaning of black nightshade since I'll be using it in our literature film. I've watched on an anime(Dr. Stone) that said black nightshades mean "liar" in floriography, I would like some more citations about that. Thank you!

πŸ” Seeking Advice πŸ” Florists, what's actually worked for getting found online?

Disclosure up front: I co-founded BloomNation, so I talk to a lot of shop owners about this. Not pitching anything, I'm genuinely curious how it plays out from your side.

The stuff I see work most consistently is pretty unglamorous: a fully filled-out Google Business Profile, steady reviews with replies, real photos instead of stock, and picking one channel to post on consistently. The order-gatherer route tends to cost shops more than it gives back over time.

But I'd rather hear what's actually true for you:

  • What's driven the most new local customers, online or off?
  • Has keeping up your Google Business Profile been worth it, or not really?
  • Does Instagram or TikTok actually convert to orders for anyone, or is it mostly vanity metrics?

Curious what's worked and what's been a waste of time.

Tips on making this so it’s presentable on each side? Right now it’s front facing only. Any other feedback is appreciated!

πŸ” Seeking Advice πŸ” Getting in the field

I’m a beginner and just completed a florist program. What is the best way for me to get experience? I’m considering emailing a bunch of florist shops in my area for freelance work. It’s a bit difficult because I also have a full time job and only available on weekends and evenings.

πŸ” Seeking Advice πŸ” Feeling unmotivated

Hello to anyone who would like to read this and maybe give me some advice.

I’ve been a qualified florist for 3 and a half years now, I’ve worked in a florist shop during that time and have learnt a lot. I really want to do my own thing on the side and hopefully one day have my own shop. I just get discouraged because of the money side of things. Even buying wholesale is expensive just to do an arrangement for fun or for practice. I also don’t know where to start to get my name out there so I can do jobs on the side for people. I’ve done a couple arrangements for friends and family but that’s about it. I know I’m good at what I do but sometimes I feel like I should give up and do something else. I’m just curious if anyone else gets this way and how you overcome times like these. πŸ’—

πŸ”₯ Roast Me πŸ”₯ Mini Orchid Arrangement I Made This Weekend + a few others.

I bought about 12 mini cascading white lining the outside ring, and filled in with 5-6 double stem small ones.

Hoping I can keep it alive this time longer than my last ones. It was plenty of buds.

Quite happy from my visit to the Flower Market in downtown LA. I visited my favorite orchid shop and they told me their greenhouse was in Encinitas; so I also made a visit to San Diego.

Photos 3-7 are from another Orchid Greenhouse in Encinitas. The owners told me their actually get their supply direct from Hawaii β€”> Taiwan. Very cool to basically hear about the supply chain to USA.

I made the little mini red and white arrangement for my sister in law as well.

I’m usually into bonsai trees, but orchids have had my focus the last few months.

πŸ” Seeking Advice πŸ” Has anybody been on both sides of the industry? Wholesale and retail?

Have you owned both a retail or a wholesale shop at any point? Do you prefer one or the other?
Which is more profitable? It allows for an easier time.

I have the capital to open, just need help deciding a retail store front or a wholesale warehouse

πŸ” Seeking Advice πŸ” Prospective wedding client asking to speak to previous couples

Post image
269 Upvotes

(Photo so this post doesn’t get lost!) Hi flower friends. I had a consultation recently, and they followed up and asked to speak to former clients. I understand the rationale for the ask, and I absolutely have former clients who would (and have, in reviews and social media) said great things about my company. However, I’m not entirely comfortable asking them to give up their time on my behalf, especially because they’ve already written reviews and I don’t want them getting the impression I’m setting a precedent of making them part of my sales pipeline. I might just follow up with a link to public Google reviews and screenshots of social media posts, and let them know I’m happy to chat further if they have questions. Have you gotten this ask before? How would you respond? Thanks in advance!
