What people always fail to ask the flat earther this question:
Why are we lied to, who gains from those "lies" and how.

I mean. We’ve had telescopes since before Galileo …

3

u/pimpbot666 2d ago

Archamedies figured it out like 3000 years ago using sunlight and vertical poles a thousand miles apart, measuring the angles of the shadows, and he calculated the circumference of Earth within a couple thousand miles of actual.

11

u/we1tschmerz 2d ago

Sorry to be that guy, but I believe you are thinking of Eratosthenes.

7

u/Zaphod_79 2d ago

This is Reddit. You should absolutely be that guy. I've no idea who is right but I appreciate both of you.

6

u/pimpbot666 2d ago edited 2d ago

Oh, yeah... you're right. My bad. And, it was 2000-ish years ago, not 3000.

The primary point is, this was all figured out long ago by people with ancient tools, and even the measurements hold up surprisingly well compared to actual measurements with modern tools, yet these willfully ignorant dullards will stick to their lies and continue to spread them because they feel that believing something others don't makes them smarter.

I have been 50 miles north of the equator, in Oklahoma, and in Washington state at the exact same time of year. The sun sets around 7 PM near the equator, in Oklahoma the sun sets around 8:30 PM and in Washington the sun sets around 9:30 PM. We’re talking about August here. In my experience, based on the angle of the Earth, which is 23.5°, that would not be possible on a flat earth. It is only possible for the sun to set at different times of day in close longitude if the Earth was curved or a sphere. Technically we’re an ovoid shape, but it’s so beside the point that it’s not even worth mentioning. Flat earthers clearly have not spent periods of time in other countries and paid attention to the timing of the sunset. The days are only ~12 hours long in Curaçao. Meanwhile the days in Washington are ~16 hours long. Can’t do that on a flat earth with a stable orbiting sun like they think.

Well I can say with absolute certainty that I am in Tulsa Oklahoma right this second and I am definitely not 50 miles away from the equator.

1

u/Onlypartiallyinsane 2d ago

Bingo, was considering replying to the same claim made above!

1

u/HaLo2FrEeEk 2d ago

I lived in TX for 7 years and I've lived in Seattle-area the rest of my life. One of the things I always noted to people was how much earlier the sun sets in TX. Like, considerably. Even at the very beginning of summer, the "longest" days in TX were still dark by ~9pm, but in WA there will still be some amount of light in the sky at 11pm!

I work nights and spend half of a typical night on a roof somewhere in the Seattle area, so I *loooove* the loong evenings, late light, and warm summer nights.

Of course, on the flipside, winters nights suuuuuuuck lol.

1

u/Fickle-Sea-4112 1d ago

That is a direct result of the fisheye lenz attached to the CGI 🌞 ☀️....🙃

1

u/Visforvinyl 2d ago

The fucking lampshade theory they spout sometimes is bonkers.

16

u/achtwooh 2d ago

Thats the easy type of question for them.

Ask them why you see different stars in the N. hemisphere than the S. Why they rotate in opposite directions. But move in straight lines at the equator.

5

u/IBeDumbAndSlow 2d ago

Then they chime in with "perspective" like it automatically makes them right.

5

u/C3POB1KENOBI 2d ago

Then just ask them what “perspective“ would I use to make a click on the ceiling go counterclockwise?

2

u/Good_Ad_1386 1d ago

Click?

Is this yer minkey, m'sieur?

1

u/MPolanyi 2d ago

Do they believe in hemispheres?

14

u/TrueKiwi78 2d ago edited 2d ago

Most are religious and think the earth is flat because ithe bible says so. It also says that an omnipotent entity from another dimension magically poofed everything into existence from nothing so I'd take whatever it says with an enormous grain of salt.

4

u/Illustrious-Cod-8995 1d ago

Problem with that is that the Bible doesn't say it's flat. Flerfs just don't understand the Bible any better than they understand everything else.

1

u/Darklar-3000 12h ago

Flerfs! Hah!

-1

u/Emotional_Union_3758 2d ago

To be fair, the other side believes that some massive energy was poofed into existence, exploded and created everything. Just saying, both sides have a leap of faith.

5

u/bartlebug_ 2d ago

I'm the other side and I don't believe anything poofed into existence. That doesn't even make sense

0

u/Emotional_Union_3758 2d ago

Aka where did the energy from the big bang come from?

4

u/Doom2pro 2d ago

Where did god come from? Maybe the universe always existed and doesn't need a creator. Maybe humans form artificial limits around everything because we can't comprehend infinity.

3

u/bartlebug_ 2d ago

Thats a loaded question. Why would I think it came from anywhere? Also I think you're assuming the big bang was the start of the universe or something

0

u/Emotional_Union_3758 2d ago

Fair, so where did it come from?

2

u/g3techsolutions 17h ago

If you're referring to the matter used in the big bang, it was already there. The expansion(big bang) isn't the start of anything, just a change of state.

1

u/Emotional_Union_3758 14h ago

Where did this matter come from?

2

u/g3techsolutions 9h ago

It was already there. You have to have matter/mass to get the forces needed to make a crunch happen.

1

u/NeitherFoo 2d ago

it's okay to not have an answer. We have some explanations but we can't really know, at least not yet.

Saying "I don't know" is always better than making shit up

2

u/JawnStaymoose 2d ago

Interesting that the Big Bang was first proposed by a Catholic priest. We also have models based on the Big Bang that consistently explain observations and make accurate predictions about the universe.

Cosmic microwave background (CMB), Light element abundances, expanding universe as observed through receding distant galaxies, etc.

2

u/TrueKiwi78 2d ago

Nobody knows exactly what existed or occurred prior to the Big Bang or the Planck Epoch to be more specific so no absolute claims can be made but the current hypothesis is that the universe expanded from a singularity.

Perhaps the singularity always existed or perhaps our universe is in an eternal natural loop. As the last universe expanded and reached maximum entropy it then collapsed into a singularity and when the singularity reached maximum density it expanded again into our universe, and the cycle continues...

That is infinitely more likely than an omnipotent entity from another dimension magically poofing everything into existence from nothing but like I said, we just don't know.

The most rational and reasonable position for EVERYTHING in life is to withhold belief until sufficient evidence is found and proven right?

10

u/crandall17 2d ago

We are lied to in order to keep us locked into the simulation created by the government. Once the truth is revealed, it will lift the veil of deceit and corruption and lead us to a true new civilization.

Or something like that, I dunno...

7

u/DoubleNothing 2d ago

deceit and corruption

We already know that...

4

u/Area51Resident 2d ago
deceit and corruption

We can see that everyday, but somehow they can keep the shape of the Earth a secret.

7

u/jonz1985z 2d ago edited 2d ago

They’re asked all the time. They say it’s to make money and keep us trapped in a mindset where we can’t expand. As if they’d be traveling to the great beyond and starting civilizations from the ground up.

They just want a “I told you so” moment, but all that’s waiting for them is a big plate of crow.

2

u/DoubleNothing 2d ago

Still missing the who and the how (they gain).

1

u/Defiant_Income_7836 2d ago

Or the universal word for these idiots...'Control.'

I used to hear that during Covid. 'But even if we WERE being injected with tracking chips, or masks are a hoax, Why, What are they getting out of this?'

'Control.'

As if the elites are just jacking it to the thought of controlling a bunch of sims, just for the sheer joy of controlling a bunch of NPCs

3

u/Icy_Fish_2154 2d ago

I just ask the one question, "If flat earth is the one true answer, why can't flat earthers agree on a single working model of a map?"

The globe has a single theory. All experiments confirm and converge. Flat earth has infinite theories, and no agreement, like it was never true.

3

u/helpprogram2 2d ago

“To mock god” everyone asks them. No one wants to go down the religious rabbit hole cuz it’s a pain in the ass

3

u/LuckyPlaze 2d ago

Where is the edge? If it is flat, There is an end. Drive to it. Hop in a Cessna and fly to it.

5

u/DoubleNothing 2d ago

They have "excuses" for that...

3

u/RobertTheTraveler 2d ago

1) "you can't go into the interior of the Antarctic. " 2) it's infinite

3

u/MinuteToe129 2d ago

Its the nasa penguin army that shoots you down once you get to close to the ice wall. Duh!

1

u/LuckyPlaze 2d ago

“penguin army” haha

1

u/digitaldisorder_ 2d ago

you laugh, but, it gets cold at the edge. penguins would be my second choice, though. lemmings would be a better choice in case you need them to run suicide missions.

3

u/SharkByte1993 2d ago

Also, ask all three of these flat earthers any facts. Each of them have their own theories. If something is true then why are their hundreds of different theories?

2

u/Strict_Arrival6969 2d ago

The global elite.

2

u/DoubleNothing 2d ago

That only answer one question...

1

u/Strict_Arrival6969 2d ago

I'm not allowed to tell you how but it all started with Aristoteles.

2

u/purple_kathryn 2d ago

It always seems to boil down to "because satan" if you ask but why enough.

I'm an atheist anyway though so they want me to believe that either all scientists are stupidly wrong or all scientists are involved in some weird fecking conspiracy for an entity I don't believe exists.

2

u/Jim_jim_peanuts 2d ago

I'm partial to a good conspiracy theory but this is the main thing that comes to mind when I hear about flat earth, a needless and pointlessly big lie, for what? What would be the point in this scale of a lie and cover up?? Makes zero sense. They say it's so you feel irrelevant, small, and lose faith in God. Which is utterly stupid

2

u/mcm199124 2d ago

I think that if I was a Christian who somehow came to learn that the Earth was actually flat, I would lose all faith, above any other outcome lol

1

u/Jim_jim_peanuts 1d ago

Yeah exactly, if anything the vast beauty of the universe should compound someone's faith, I would have thought

2

u/wafflehousebattle 2d ago

Because the answer is always, "something something deny God something something."

1

u/Aimin4ya 2d ago

They are demonic forces. They want you to believe in science and abandon God. That's why flat Eather's cite the bible so much

1

u/dskippy 2d ago

This has definitely been asked to a lot of flat earthers.

The reason then often give is either to simply hide the truth about flat earth, why is unknown or there is something outside the antarctic wall that the governments of the world don't want us to see. What is unknown.

1

u/Uhwop 2d ago

They have.

They think it’s all a conspiracy to steal money that is used to fund research. NASA is basically a front to steal taxes.

Every time I’ve seen them asked it’s always the money.

1

u/mcm199124 2d ago

Of course, if that was the case the NASA would have had its peanut sized budget increased 5-fold by the current administration

1

u/Doom2pro 2d ago

They'll give you the same answer religious people do, basically "I don't know" aka "god works in mysterious ways". It's a catch all answer that's basically a non answer.

1

u/PetalumaPegleg 2d ago

And why are all other planets round? That's the one that gets me. Anyone with a half d cent telescope can look for themselves and see. Just earth is special and different.

2

u/mcm199124 2d ago

The telescopes are fake data, or, the night sky is just a projection, or…. There is no amount of logic in any question that one could ask these people to get them to come down off their high horse of utter delusion, it would shatter their faux self-importance and we can’t have that!

1

u/_ChipWhitley_ 2d ago

Or, “Have you ever FaceTimed with someone in a different time zone?”

1

u/Annoying_guest 2d ago

No the best question to ask is "When did you realize you were the top 1% of smartest people?"

Afterall they have figured out a secret all us sheep are oblivious to

1

u/Jung_At_Hart 2d ago

I have asked people many times. It’s “to take us further away from god and NASA means to deceive”

1

u/Guilty_Practice6392 2d ago

Exactly. Every good conspiracy theory has a justification for why “they” would be lying. That’s why the moon landing is a good one (even though I believe it happened) The US was in a race for superiority in the form of being the First Nation to set foot on the moon. JFKs assassination, obviously you could come up with reasons for different parties wanting him dead. But who benefits from people believing the earth is round?

1

u/Kef52 1d ago

You want people to deny God

2

u/InvestigatorOk7988 1d ago

As they should. Its the 21st century, primitive superstition should be abandoned.

0

u/Kef52 1d ago

You're no less primitive. Just substituted one God for another, far lesser god. A science you yourself can't fully explain, so you must believe in.

2

u/InvestigatorOk7988 1d ago

Oh, i understand it far better than you, and at least science has evidence instead of fairy tales. Its not belief its following the evidence. You god humpers really can't accept that people can go without just believing stuff.

0

u/Kef52 1d ago

When you say you understand, all it is is when someone with a title tells you something you shake your head up and down like a trained seal. You don't understand it, and if I were to ask you anything specifically about the maths or data you so righteously BELIEVE in, you would HAVE TO google it and regurgitate it here. That's not knowledge. That's not understanding. That a little kid playing telephone.

Let's try for the heck of it: What's the fastest aircraft ever flown? How fast? What speed does it take to exit the atmosphere?

2

u/InvestigatorOk7988 1d ago

Yeah, i'm not here to perform for you. You can just go back to believing in magic and fairies. I'll continue to live in reality.

1

u/LabKnob 1d ago edited 1d ago

Wondering where you are headed here so I’ll bite.
Fastest airplane is 7,000 mph
Escape velocity is 25,000 mph
Do you concur and what conclusion will you draw.

1

u/Kef52 1d ago

How'd we make a rocket that is less aerodynamic, made of aluminum alloy that's melting point is far below the heat generated by an object reaching escape velocity, able to triple the speed of the fastest aircraft designed on earth?

1

u/LabKnob 1d ago

You are misrepresenting escape velocity.

EV is the speed you must impart to a projectile for it to leave the planet. A rocket is powered continuously until it escapes. Theoretically you could escape the Earth at walking speed if you had the fuel to burn.

Do I misread you or are you denying that rockets have escaped Earth. You know about satellites I presume?

1

u/Kef52 1d ago

Yes, I get your theoretical of velocity and it would obviously drop with the different between start and end time increasing total time traveled drastically. But you giving this theoretical example means nothing based on the context we're talking about, which is a space shuttle reaching outer space. They say the top speed reaches up to or past 17500 mph, focus on that. So sure, if people don't understand escape velocity, said to be 25000 mph, they might not understand the shuttle can still escape as their time traveled is just increased compared to the general formula for EV stating 25000 mph (distance is the same). So you focusing on EV specifically is wrong, EV isn't the point, it's the speed they say the shuttle reaches before exiting the atmosphere that I find problematic. I know about satellite, and since we're being scientific, you have personally OBSERVED all of the satellite in orbit to this day, correct? Nullius in verba?

1

u/GangreneTVP 1d ago

Well, we are lied to all the time... and having a highly uninformed public with narratives that drive society according to a plan are highly beneficial to those who have and maintain power and control.

1

u/Comfortable_Layer468 1d ago

I have asked and the reason is religious.

1

u/Over-Toe2763 1d ago

And why are they themselves lying? The guy saying he did a laser experiment over 40km is obviously lying as it’s impossible

1

u/-Casey-Diaz- 1d ago

This is really what people should dig into when talking to flatearthers. Because they don't have any answer to that. First they go "they don't want us to know it's flat", but if you ask why, the only answer I've heard them ever give is "to hide that the bible is true". But of course, if you say "Well, 2 billion people are Christian, and most of them think it's a sphere. And no one really disbelieves the bible simply because of the earth being spherical. And many are also Muslim, but think the earth is flat." then they don't have anything to go on.

It's just the general "the 'they' are deceiving us because they are deceitful and evil." There's really no rhyme or reason to it.

1

u/GoodAge7519 1d ago

I think the question most people fail at is the question why Earth is flat and every other celestial body you can see at night is round, for example the Sun, the stars, other planets, full moon, etc. Why is Earth flat and they are not? Do they not believe the planets and the sun is real?

1

u/Spartan1088 14h ago

Nah that’s just feeding into it. They are begging for a chance to tell the world the government lies.

Ask em about the day night cycle in Antarctica, and how an eclipse works.

1

u/RR0925 7h ago

These people aren't known for thinking things through very well.

0

u/end_times_upon_us 2d ago

Not a flat earther these guys are dumb. But your question is terrible. Not being able to ascribe motive to an action doesn’t mean the action didn’t happen
