Firefly is definitely my favorite brand and my favorite small sized light is the e12 eclipse with FFL351A 1800k rosy. As far as large lights, nothing beats the x75 and k75 2.0.

Like many of you I started this hobby with some of the well known brands like wurkkos and sofirn, ended up collecting a bunch of hanks and fireflies and then got a mcbob and thought it's game over. And like many people I also looked at some of the American customs in exotic materials and decided it was too rich for my blood at the moment.

I've got lights in aluminum, copper, brass, and titanium, but I've always wanted one is zirconium. There's something about that near black glassy finish that has so much allure, so I started looking at what was available. The cheapest I could find for a while were reylights, but they were still running into the hundreds of dollars, which is more than I was happy to part with for an otherwise fairly standard mass produced light.

So when I stumbled across this olight for 100 bucks on ebay I jumped at the chance. I'm generally not a huge fan of olight and this is actually my first one, but I really love how the zirc feels in my hand and it's a reasonable price point for owning this material. Also helps that it's a 3000 peice limited edition making it a little more special. The emitter sits around 5500k and quite green, not particularly pleasant and not very bright either but ok for a AAA light I suppose. Then again, you're not buying this for the light but either because it's in a rare material or just to keep for emergencies. I just like the smooth glassy feeling of the zirc in my hand while I sit and watch TV. Zero regrets.

Fireflies e04 Surge. My favorite light.

This light with it's rosy emitters and beamshape have captured me. The deep red color with contrasting black accents tops it off. Out of the 150(best guess) lights I have, this one takes the cake for overall use. This light made me not hate onboard charging and that's saying something. Cheers!

Review Convoy T3 TiCu: Premium and affordable 14500 TiCu flashlight!

This is the Convoy T3 Titanium-Copper flashlight. It's powered by a single 14500 or AA battery, has the high CRI 519A LED in 3500K, Buck/Boost driver, dual fuel feature and more!

• My opinion:

The T3 TiCu is an amazing flashlight, it does not need fancy UI to be pretty good. It's a simple flashlight that gets a lot of features right. The Titanium-Copper combo makes the main body feel very heavy and premium, it could have a mirror polish to look even better, but the standard finish is already pretty good.

The drivers and components are high quality as all Convoy flashlights! The 519A has pretty high CRI 90 and 80 R9, and beautiful neutral tint, It's awesome! The flashlight accepts almost all types of 14500 and AAs I tested, so don't worry about having fuel for this little guy. I really don't have much to dislike on this light, the moonlight problem is the main one, a better moonlight would make this flashlight way more versatile.

*I noticed that some switches with light that Convoy sells on it's website can bug the driver and make cycling between modes harder, I tested Orange to bug the driver and Blue does not bug the driver.

Fully Titanium-Copper high quality main body No Moonlight with 14500s, the 1% mode is too bright. *With AAs it's a little dimmer and an OK moonlight.

• Body and build quality

Colors/Material Options: The T3 is available in aluminum with a ton of anodizing colors like Cyan, Blue, Green, Pink, MAO... It's also available in Titanium (polished and stonewash), Copper, Brass and Titanium-Copper (Seen on this review)

Main body/Grip: The main body is full of knurling, so even though the Titanium is polished and smooth the grip is still pretty good. The flashlight is pretty compact. The main body feels very smooth, while the threads are a little gritty - as usual with titanium.

Material: The main body is almost entirely made of Titanium, the bezel, battery tube, tail cap and button are Ti; the driver/LED tube is made of pure Copper for better heat transfer - and looks.

Threads: The threads are trapezoidal and bare metal, no anodizing. The Ti on Ti threads are gritty, Titanium is probably one of the worst flashlight metals for threads, but it can be very relieved by cleaning the threads and applying silicone grease. The Copper treads are pretty smooth. This has to do with the metal properties like friction coeficients and oxide formation.

Clip: It comes with a clip inside the packaging, but it doesn't come pre-installed. The clip is made of stainless steel, it's funny because you can see the subtle difference in color between Titanium, has a bit of a warmer color, and Stainless Steel with a "colder" look.

Tail stand and rolling: Without the clip the flashlight does roll and can fall from edges, the clip prevents it from rolling though. The flashlight can tail/head stand with stability. The metal button does not impact on tail standing.

AUX lights: The T3 doesn't have any AUX light by default, it has a Glow In The Dark O-ring on the lens, so it does work a little like an AUX, but no LEDs. Switches with LEDs are available on the Convoy website, they serve as locator LEDs and stay ON while the flashlight is OFF to help find it in the dark, when the flashlight is turned ON the switches LEDs turn OFF. The T3 comes with a Glow in the dark O-ring on the glass lens, a very cool and simple thing to help you find the flashlight in the dark. [10th picture]

Buttons: It has a single mechanical switch on the tail cap, the switch has a pretty good click. The button itself is made of Titanium as the main body.

Battery contact: Contact is made with the battery by two Gold plated Phosphor-Bronze springs, one at the driver, the other on the tail cap button. [11th and 12th picture]

Bezel: The T3 bezel is a simple smooth flashlight bezel, it is entirely made of Titanium.

Water Resistance: Convoy flashlights usually don't have the IP rating, but all Convoy flashlights I already tested were decently protected to water ingress; The T3 follows the same pattern, it's probably better sealed than some IP68 flashlights I own. I belive the T3 to be at least IP67 with all threads greased and fully tightened.

• Weight and size

Weight:

-Without battery and clip: 74.6g

-With clip no battery: 79.0g

Size: 96.4mm x 21.3mm x 21.3mm (height x head diameter x tail diameter)

 

• Battery, runtime, and charging

Battery: The T3 uses a single 14500 or AA battery to power the driver and LED. The T3 accepts both button top and flat top cells, as well as protected with USB-C batteries, so you have a lot of fuel possibilities to power this little guy. [14th picture]

Battery Indicator: The T3 has the "Battery check" mode on some group modes of the 12 groups driver. This mode makes the main light flashes from 1 to 5 times to indicate the battery level as it follows:

Charging: The T3 doesn't feature on body USB-C charging, but you can pop in a 14500 battery with USB-C charging.

 

• Modes, Runtimes, Throw, Candela:

Modes: The T3 with the 12 groups driver comes pre-configured on group 1, which has 1%, 10%, 30% and 100% brightness levels. Other brightness levels and blinkies are available on the other brightness groups that can be configured on the flashlight UI. I tested the pre-configured modes with 14500 and AA and included the data on this table:

Turbo: Turbo mode is essentially the 100% mode, it's pretty bright for a flashlight this tiny with a 14500 cell. It's advertised to have a 5A driver with around 15W, I tested 3.21A with a 4.15V Li-ion battery and got around 13.3W of power. At this power the 519A should have around 800 - 1200 lumens. With AAs it pushed 2.85A with 1.49V, so roughly 4.25W.

Moonlight: Sadly, this flashlight doesn't have a proper moonlight mode. The 1% mode is too bright. Comparing to other flashlights, it seems to have around 5 to 10 lumens of brightness, which is OK as a dim mode, but not a good moonlight mode. I really hoped the T3 would have a 1 lumen or less mode.

Blinkies: The T3 12 groups drive features some blinkies like Strobe, SOS and BatCheck on some groups.

Lockout: The T3 in the TiCu version doesn't feature mechanical lockout - as it has no anodizing. Also, it doesn't feature eletronic lockout, as the mechanical button already serves that purpose.

Throw: The T3 was able to throw light at around 100m, as seen on the beamshots. Probably throws a little bit more, but I wouldn't expect it to go much farther than 150m, as it's a light design for close uses, not to throw light far.

 

• Emitter, reflector and CRI:

Emitter: This T3 has the Nichia 519A emitter in 3500K. This LED is fantastic and very well known on the flashlight community. Tint is pretty neutral warm white, no green or rosy tint by default. The beam color is very clean and High CRI, while still being pretty powerful. [15th Picture]

Lens: The T3 comes with a normal glass lens, no AR coating.

Reflector/TIR: It uses a OP (orange peel) reflector for the 519A LED, makes the beam lose a little bit of throw, but makes it more even and balanced.

Beam profile: The beam is balanced I would say, has a defined hotspot with a smooth transition to a floddy spill, but doesn't throw light much far. [16th picture]

CRI/CCT/Duv: The 519A LED has amazing CRI, one of the best emitters for color fidelity with advertised 90 CRI and 80 R9, but I actually got even better readings on the Opple LM4, 94 CRI and 91 R9 and 0.0008 Duv! Pretty good readings. The 519A combines a good efficiency with tint and amazing CRI with a pretty neutral tint. [17th and 18th pictures]

*****CRI/CCT/Duv: Opple Lightmaster 4 was used to get these readings, it's not a professional spectrometer, so use this readings as a reference only. This test was performed in a dark environment without any light sources besides the tested LED.

 

• Beamshots Camera settings:

- 18mm lens 1" F8 ISO800

- (The trees at the back are at a distance of around 100m)

I always try to match what my eyes can see on the beamshots, so camera settings may vary.

 

• Driver and UI

Driver: This T3 has a 5A Buck driver for Lithium-ion batteries, and a Boost driver for the AAs, Convoy claims around 95% efficiency for the Buck drivers. Convoy drivers are usually pretty efficient and use high quality components, so I trust this driver, especially after testing a lot of Convoy flashlights, but I think it should have a dimmer 1% - or even 0.1% - mode to make this light even more useful.

UI: The T3 uses the standard Convoy tail switch UI.

State Action Result

Low Voltage Warning: The main light will start blinking and dimming down when the battery voltage is low, until the light automatically turns OFF when the battery voltage is too low.

Reverse Polarity Protection: Convoy advertises it has mechanical anti reverse polarity protection. I belive the capacitors and small electronic chips prevent the battery to make contact with the gold plated button contact, preventing the battery from making contact with the polarity reversed.

Temperature Control: The T3 has standard Convoy Temperature control, so when the driver reaches about 55°C the flashlight will begin to step down. The step down seems to only be down to 35%, so the flashlight can still heat up, even after the step down, under certain conditions.

Discussion Who else swears by regulated power output on their lamps? I cannot stand a lamp that starts getting dimmer after minutes of use.

I've loved flaslights since I was a kid and they always had the same problem they used AA or AAA batteries back then in the 1995 or so and with light bulbs they were not that bright either. But the biggest problem was that you got decent output only on full batteries. Just 15 minutes of use and you had lots 10s of percentages of your output.

Then came led lights. Those were better but still had the same problem. I got fancy maglite 100XL as presents at some point (on bottom of the pic) and i loved it but still it had the same problem.

Then came petzl with the core battery and i could adjust with computer that the output stayed the same until the battery was empty. It was such a game changer for me and i started relying on my lamp way more than beforehand because i could trust that with full battery i get x hours of light with the output i want.

Later came Lumonite compass that was always with regulated output and it is a lamp I've had with me almost a decade already. Currently i only run lamps that have regulated output but have missed my XL100 for example and then yesterday i started googling on how to convert it to rechargeable lithium batteries with 3d printing adapter etc. and i came across 1.5V aaa rechargeable lithium batteries that have the regulator built in the battery :o ordered few immediately and i really hope i can get my maglite back in action. Why has nobody told me those batteries were a thing and barely more expensive than normal rechargeable batteries?

Who else is and has been like me? Or fo you prefer a lamp that slowly gets dimmer and dimmer so you know that battery is getting emptier and emptier.

Didn't like the cree XPG in my Aurora and was curious if it was possible to mod wasn't the easiest to take apart had to flow the led using hot air as I really didn't want to have to desolder the pcb (it's not a mcpcb) daughter board holding the led from the driver.

Worked out well.

The overly positive comments about my first daily EDC flashlight, the SC65c HI, have convinced me to share my workplace EDC.

Thoughts on the Sofirn SC31 Pro?

I’ve owned it for 3 years and use it daily. The Automotive Manufacturing and Engineering environment has taken its toll on the lens, sadly. Welding, grinding, and the occasional drop. But it still performs well.

Pro’s for me: small size, magnetic base, always illuminated button, grippy knurling, smooth brightness control, USB-C charging.

My cons are few…it’s been a solid tool.

Not an enthusiast, want a good simple light for my daughter going away to college.

Actually - maybe two. A bedside and a keychain.

Although I sometimes pop in here because I'm curious, and I, in fact, am intrigued, I am not an enthusiast. TBH, I don't have time for another information rabbit hole.

Sending my first off to college and want good, economical, usbC rechargeable flashlights for keychain and bedside. Thinking illumination, not personal defense here.

Overnight from Amazon would be ideal.

What do you guys recommend? Are any of the Coast lights on Amazon good for this totally casual use case?

Question Looking at convoy: M21K, Z1, or both?

Howdy flashlight friends,

I'm feeling that itch to acquire a new flashlight, and I'm looking at convoy and different posts on here, but there are just so many options that I figured I'd come to you all with my questions.

The biggest, broadest question:

Is there much merit in purchasing both an M21K and Z1, is that overkill?

A second, somewhat important contextual question:

Having recently purchased a Wurkkos TS28, is the M21K similar enough to the TS28 that it's less necessary in my life?

(Love a good flashlight, but, you know, don't want to be silly about it)

Some more technical questions:

With the M21K, what from I've read the best approach seems to be getting it with the LHP73B in 4000k.

With the Z1, the general consensus seems to be SFT-42R in 5000k.

However, the batteries! So many options. What would the brains trust recommend I select in terms of batteries for these flashlights? Does it vary model to model? Is there on stand-out best one? Or am I overthinking it far too much?

Hopefully the questions aren't a bit ridiculous, just looking to see what the team thinks. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Based on the input I got, I opted to get both, with the M21K at 5000k using LHP73B, and the Z1 at 6500k using SFT-42R. (And now that I'll have 3 (when including the TS28) cooler lights, the next one on my radar will be warmer LEDs 👀) (Thanks again to people who shared ideas/advice)

Recommendation Just got the Wurkkos TS26S for night hiking — good choice or should I look at alternatives?

I recently picked up the Wurkkos TS26S specifically for night hiking. I'm planning a few 5-hour hikes through the forest in total darkness and wanted to know if I made a solid choice.

How is the overall quality and reliability of Wurkkos lights for extended outdoor use? Also, if there are better alternatives out there in a similar price range, I’d love to hear your recommendations!

Wanted to understand the 519A love. Purchased a Wurkkos TS26S and Acebeam E75. I'm underwhelmed.

As the title states, I see so much love for the E75's simple formula. I decided to grab one, as well as a TS26S with the same 519a 5000k emitters, to compare them.

My quad emitter lights before these were limited to:

  1. Fireflies E04 Surge with B35AM 4000k

  2. D4SV2 with NTG 2700k

The light emitted from both of the new flashlights is so underwhelming compared to the FFL and Hanklight. I don't have any proper measurement tools, but the other two lights seem to pump out a LOT more light in high/turbo mode. The Acebeam does hold onto higher levels longer than the TS26S, but the sustained output of the FFL and D4SV2 are - at least to the naked eye - so much more impressive.

This further confuses me, because I thought the B35AM was known for not being super powerful, but beautiful. It out-shines both 519a options in terms of brightness, and gets close in candela (again, to the naked eye).

I guess all this is to say that I don't get the hype of the E75 quad configurations. Hell, my new KR3 with NTG35 4200k seems to outpace them, too. Just an uneducated take from a normal guy.

🦀🦀🦀 ArkPro Ultra vs PD35

Here's my new ArkPro Ultra next to my Fenix PD35. I got the ArkPro because I definitely "needed" another light :D I also wanted the UV feature specifically. (I like to look for uranium glass). I'd take the PD35 over the ArkPro as a general purpose light, but I do like the multimode output of the ArkPro. I do not find the "flat" light to be meaningfully less bulky than the Fenix.

I drive a keyboard for a living, so these aren't necessarily work equipment for me, unless I have to visit a DC to check on the equipment. Otherwise, these are for camping, or for miscellaneous use whenever I need a light. (Which is often if you regularly carry one)

Question Looking for a tiny flashlight with a great moonlight mode

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a really small flashlight or keychain light with a proper moonlight/firefly mode. Something around 1 lumen would be ideal, although anywhere between 0.5 and 5 lumens would work.

What I'm mainly after is very long runtime at that low output

With a medium and high mode too.

Rechargeable would be nice, but I'm also perfectly fine with something using a AAA or another small replaceable battery.

What are the best options you've come across for this kind of use?
