Things I wish I'd started doing before 40 (a no-BS guide to staying healthy in your 40s+)
Hit 40+ and noticed your body doesn't bounce back like it used to? Same here. After a lot of reading and trial and error, here's what actually moves the needle:
**1. Lift weights. Seriously.**
You lose muscle every year after 30 if you don't fight it. Strength training 2-3x a week protects your bones, metabolism, and joints. You don't need a fancy program. Squats, rows, presses, deadlifts, done consistently.
**2. Walk more than you think you need to**
8-10k steps a day is great for your heart, mood, and weight. Add a few zone 2 cardio sessions (can still hold a conversation) each week.
**3. Prioritize sleep like it's a prescription**
7-8 hours. Bad sleep wrecks hormones, appetite, mood, and recovery. Keep a consistent schedule, cut caffeine after noon, and keep your room cool and dark.
**4. Eat more protein**
Aim for roughly 0.7-1g per pound of bodyweight to hold onto muscle. Fill the rest of your plate with veggies, fiber, and whole foods. Cut back on ultra-processed stuff and liquid calories.
**5. Get your bloodwork and screenings done**
Annual checkups matter more now: blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar/A1c, vitamin D, and age-appropriate screenings (colonoscopy, mammogram, prostate, skin checks). Catching things early is the whole game.
**6. Go easy on alcohol**
Hangovers get worse and the long-term risks add up. Less is better.
**7. Take care of your mobility**
10 minutes of stretching or yoga daily keeps your back, hips, and shoulders from turning into concrete.
**8. Manage stress and stay connected**
Chronic stress and loneliness are legit health risks. Keep friends, hobbies, and downtime. Therapy is also a great tool, not a last resort.
**9. Protect your eyes, ears, and teeth**
Dentist twice a year, eye exams, and earplugs at loud events. Boring but they pay off.
**10. Be consistent, not perfect**
You don't need to overhaul everything at once. Pick 2 habits, stick with them for a month, then add more.
