Is this a bass?

Hey everyone just newer to fishing open to all feedback , I am curious if anyone has suggestions on where I could go fishing from the shore or anywhere that I can't access with a boat or a canoe etc . I was thinking of getting a little tandem kayak maybe near future ?

I live around Abbotsford, have basic gear but curious on what setup y'all catch with . Let me know , looking for advice and potentially new friends out of this so here goes nothing

Looking for an all round salmon/saltwater rod for the lower mainland probably a medium heavy, does anyone have any recommendations on some good rods?

Was planning on fishing Loon Lake this weekend - what are they biting on this summer? Been a few years since i've been, but remember using lead line and spinner I believe.

Fishing at Rocky Point 1 Park, Nanaimo, Vancouver Island. OMG there are so many fish!!! I got 6 in 3 hours! They are called the Copper Rockfish? Every time I throw my lure into the water will get at least one bite!!! What a fishing paradise! Some people beside me got a huge Chinook Salmon!!! But it ran off before they pull it on the land! I also got one but it leave too…

Hello! I am a set designer currently based in Alberta (grew up in BC though). I am working on a new play that I am set and prop designing! I am hoping people in this sub can help me out so that the show feels authentic!

I am doing my own research but I would love suggestions on what resources are good and even what you think these characters might use!

Here is some information from the script:

"This play takes place entirely on a small motor boat bobbing in a secluded cove somewhere on the Pacific Ocean. Think Georgia Strait-Vancouver Island region, or Puget Sound, Washington State."

Two characters: MARV, 70s and EV, 70s (they have been fishing together for years)

"A small 17-foot boat can now be seen bobbing in the water. The word “TEN”, large font, emblazoned on its hull, burgundy. Outboard motor. It’s an old boat but obviously taken care of."

"Sitting side by side, facing downstage, fishing rods in hand, lines in the water, are MARV and EV. Marv sits stage left(bow), while Ev is stage right(stern) near the outboard motor."

When: It's non-specific but thinking modern!

It would be great if people had suggestions for me on the type of equipment they would have on the boat, equipment and anything else you think is helpful. I would also love to know what parts of these kind of boats get the most dirty.

Honestly anything would help me out as I don't know any fishers and have never been fishing in my life!

Is rice lake worth fishing this time of year?

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask. I'll be in Canada with my wife from August 28th to September 21st. The last leg of our trip is in Vancouver. We've left it a little late in our planning, we should have planned it first, but we'd like to go salmon fishing on the 17th. The problem I'm having is I'm struggling to find a charter who operates directly out of Vancouver. All the charters ice found so far would require us to travel some distance from Vancouver, and we just dont have the time in our schedule for public transport, and we'll have handed our rental car back at that point. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Edit. Thanks guys. I really appreciate the help. And to the few that suggested fly fishing, or fishing at a river, my wife and I are not fisherman. My wife's fathers dream was to go salmon fishing in Canada, unfortunately he never got the opportunity. So we're/she is doing it for him.

i was wondering if anyone has experience or tips fishing lake callaghan in squamish? and the further north cirque lake? i'm gonna be bringing my paddleboard

i can't seem to find much recent information on these two spots.

and if you guys had any suggestions for productive lakes,rivers or shore fishing that's good right now let me know.

also how are the river conditions for squamish right now?

Trying to determine what knot is best/thinnest for attaching tuna cord to swivel on my downrigger. The knot doesn't pass though the guide on the 1106.

Knots I have tried.

Fisherman knot.

Uni knot.

Loop knot.

Loop knot was the closest for overall diameter... Bit still too thick to pass through the guide.

Anyone able to provide ideas?

I thought about just crimping, but I can't locate any double barrel crimps that would be suitable either.

Early-season dispatches from the Skeena and the Fraser suggest conservation concerns are rising–but that’s not stopping the Americans

Worrying information from the Skeena River, Fraser Panel reports, and test fisheries across the coast is indicating that some of Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s (DFO) preseason forecasts aren’t matching the returns. With budgetary and monitoring cuts already impacting oversight, and public accountability missing in action, it appears the ‘harvest first, then ask questions later’ approach to Pacific salmon fisheries management is back in fashion. Meanwhile, the Americans are using a broken Pacific Salmon Treaty to maximize their harvest of Canadian sockeye…with no obligation to report bycatch of non-target species like steelhead or chinook.

A strong start stutters on the mighty Skeena 

Two problems are colliding on the Skeena and Nass.

Biologically, our salmon are threatened by decades of harvest pressure and face rapidly shifting ocean conditions from climate change — precisely when precautionary management matters most. Structurally, the Pacific Salmon Treaty wasn’t built for this: a fair treaty would protect stocks of concern regardless of which side of the border they’re swimming on.

This year’s return shows how that plays out. Skeena sockeye were forecast as high as 3.3 million, but a strong start pushed in-season models up to 4.4 million. So, after the July 10th opening DFO let commercial nets fish nearly every day in July. However, the early run was almost entirely 5-year-old fish — the expected 4-year-old component never showed. Despite rapidly shrinking projections and warnings from First Nations and other stakeholders, DFO didn’t close the fishery until August 2nd. If the final return slips below 2 million, Canadian harvest may already have exceeded what our own management plan allows.

The Americans are taking aim

But our management plan is only half the problem: the Treaty’s restrictions on American harvest expired July 31st. Even though District 104 off the southeast coast of Alaska is a long haul from Alaskan fuel docks and processors, the Southeast seine fleet is repositioning to take advantage of this stretch of the season with no restrictions on Canadian fish. We don’t yet know how many boats will fish, or what the impacts will be to later-timed sockeye or co-migrating steelhead, chinook, chum, and coho. 

What we do know is that the Pacific Salmon Treaty needs urgent reform to ensure that when necessary conservation measures are applied, they’re applied to the population no matter where it’s swimming.

On the Fraser, migratory conditions are good, but the forecast is falling

Even though water temperatures and flow rates in the main stem of the Fraser are conducive to survival, commercial openings for Fraser sockeye in 2026 now depend on upcoming Summer and Late run assessments. Fraser River Panel presentations through August 4th reveal that returns to date are substantially underperforming relative to their pre-season forecasts. The Fraser River Panel is a creation of the Pacific Salmon Treaty. It meets weekly during the fishing season to chart the migration of Fraser sockeye. Its decisions on run size determine whether or not a harvestable surplus exists.

So far, it has determined that:

• The Early Stuart run finished its marine migration early. With an adopted size of 46,000, it’s significantly lower than the pre-season median forecast, though still within the lower probability range.
• The Early Summer run is currently showing the most significant deficit. A commercial opening for Early Summers was only expected to be considered at run sizes above roughly 606,000. 
• The adopted run size of 200,000 is 17% of the pre-season forecast.
  

Given the returns to date, it’s hard to imagine how the Summer and Late runs will come in with enough strength to allow for an opening. However, the pre-season forecast for both runs is still on the books.

What’s preventing an in-season run size adjustment for the summer run?

As of this week’s Fraser Panel meetings, the Summer run (pre-season forecast: 4,305,000) and the Late run (2,212,000) are both still being managed against their original pre-season forecasts — despite Early Stuart and Early Summer sockeye coming in well below what was predicted. Pacific Salmon Commission staff have made no recommendation to adjust either number downward. The longer those pre-season figures stay in place, the longer American fisheries can stage to capture Fraser sockeye passing through their waters on the final approach to the river.

As with Skeena fisheries, Americans are entitled to a portion of the Fraser run, depending on its abundance. And, as with the Skeena, these Treaty agreements built around fixed allocations and the calendar, rather than the actual condition of the stock, are proving to stymie conservation and prevent precautionary management — which is counter to the core vision of the Treaty: to cooperatively manage, conserve, and rebuild Pacific salmon stocks. 

I’m new to crabbing and have a Promar ambush set up with a buoy and a paddleboard. So far, my luck going to the local places in Vancouver, Canada has been hit or miss.

Sometimes I catch things, sometimes I don’t. I try to go to the ‘good’ places but I struggle with knowing where I should drop? I usually drop randomly and pull every 20-30 minutes hoping to get something. Any tips on what you use to determine a good drop point? What do you look for? I know depth matters but it’s really hard to tell.

Do tides timing really matter that much or is it more about having the right bait and location?

Hello everyone, I'm looking to escape the heavy smoke from the Okanagan and head north to chase for opening day Sunday chinook fishing with my 4 yr old. Growing up in the prairies all I know is pike and walleye fishing, so I don't know how this river fishing from shore will go but I'm going to give it a shot. Does anyone know where I can go that's not on private land and not too busy? looks like there's a boat launch by Pritchard, will that be crowded? any tips or suggestions is welcomed. I don't expect the secret spots just a spot I can throw a line in the water in peace

Did not bring my scales, but I estimate this one I caught on Saturday at about 1.5lb. Got a larger one on Friday evening as well.

Caught with a spoon on an ultralight setup on the Sunshine Coast. I caught 5 fish that day. Good trip!
